A rabbi explains why the story of Elisha and the Aramean armies teaches us to seek peace. Shared meals matter most: many beautiful things begin when people eat together, and communal eating creates the conditions for peace and fellowship.

This Sabbath coming, I'm preaching, and I'm talking about the story where Elisha leads the armies of Aram into Judah, and they trap them, and then he tells the king to feed them, and he does, and then they go home, and they don't attack again. And he said, "Yes, yes, I know the story." And I said, "What do you teach from that story?" And he said, like that, just like he didn't even have to think about it, he just said, "We must always seek the solution of peace." And I said, "Wow!" And I'm just like, I'm levitating off my chair. I just think, "This is amazing!" And then I said, "So, what I'm actually going to do in this sermon is we're going to follow kind of the idea of sharing meals and the shared meal throughout Scripture and what we can learn from those who shared meals together." And he smiled really big and he said, "Many beautiful things begin with the sharing of food." And I said, "That's true."
