Hello, and welcome back to the Naked Marriage podcast. We are Dave and Ashley Willis, and on this podcast, we undressed the truth about sex, intimacy, and lifelong love. And you guys are in for a real treat today. We have some old and new friends in studio who have such an inspiring love story and are inspiring in what they do to help marriages, and Dave is going to tell you more about them.
I'm so excited about Anthony and Shannon Braswell being in the room.
That's right.
Anthony is the first person to invite us to teach a marriage conference like, a decade ago outside of our home church.
Outside of our home church.
We've done it at our home church. But outside of that, it's the first guy that said, okay, I'll take a chance on this.
We'll take a chance in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I know. I'm so thankful for that, but a lot's happened since then. Anthony and Shannon are the founders of Uncover Marriage, Wonderful, dynamic marriage speakers, and many, many other things. Their story is powerful and profound, and we're going to have a lot of fun today. So welcome. Welcome to the podcast.
Yeah, we're so excited. I feel like I'm just sitting across from friends.
You are.
You are.
Yeah, you totally are.
We just have some extra friends listening in.
Exactly. They're just listening to everything we say. Well, we want to take it back to when you all first kind of met and tell us more about your.
Love story, which wasn't that long ago. Yes, a lot has happened.
A lot has happened.
Maybe even like a little.
Even before. Yes, A little bit about yourself.
Start wherever you want to start.
Yeah, so we'll go back a little bit.
That'd be great.
So everybody can kind of know a little bit of our story. I was married for 30 years, and goodness, I have two kids, grandkids, a football coach's wife, and, you know how we were the family that nothing bad happened to until it did. And coach Jimmy Fields was my late husband, and he was diagnosed with als, which is Lou Gehrig's disease, which is a horrible, horrible disease to walk through. So at that moment in our life, that was actually March of 2020, when all hell was breaking loose in the world. Our home was just. I don't know, it was like we were forever changed. So we were in a fight for about a year, and he went running into the arms of Jesus in February 15th of 2021. Wow. It was a long, but short 11 months. And the sweetest thing or the thing that's. That's the memory of our family is that he never quit and never wanted us to quit. And that is why I'm here today, because he made sure that I knew that if he went home to be with the Lord, that I would dream big and love big and keep acting and keep speaking and bring a whole lot of people with me. So that's one of the reasons I'm here today. Why don't you tell them a little about yours?
So while she was living life with Coach Jimmy in Georgia, I was in North Carolina, as you guys said. And Marianne and I were married for almost 25 years, and we have two kids. And about 2012, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. And for those next several years, there were extreme highs and there were extreme lows. We were just pastoring a church in Raleigh, North Carolina, and just loving our community. And. And then in 2019, her breast cancer metastasized and spread throughout her body in the form of a brain tumor and a mass in her chest. And so while they were fighting for all that they were worth, we were doing the same thing in North Carolina. And then on December 7, 2020, Marianne went dancing with Jesus. And what's crazy about it is she passed away on Coach Jimmy's birthday. And so that day, December 7, the day as a family, we just really honor them both really big. But when you're in those moments, you. You feel like life is over, you know, like, it's just like it's never going to be amazing again. And we celebrated so much of our past and what God had done in our lives. You almost lose sight in those moments that you have a future, and it's easy to get stuck on the couch, as we often say.
That's right. You can get stuck. I mean, when you go through trauma and loss and grief and all of those things, I mean, you don't. You can't see the future. You can't see that there's anything good. It's really, really difficult. Some difficult times. And I remember I got really tired. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. You know what I'm saying? And I remember getting off the couch, walking around the couch, and I'm like, lord, I don't know what this grief thing is, but I know I want to move to the next step. I want to move out of where I am right now, because I'm stuck. I am really tired, and I'm tired of crying. I'm tired of eating alone. I'm tired of all these things. That's what you were tired of also. And I just remember. I'm like, lord, please open these doors. I don't know what it's going to look like, but I'm going to say yes to you. And I do remember. I was like, okay, and I got one more thing. And if you want me to meet a person, I am open to it. I don't care if it's now, if it's four years, I'm open to it. But I want three things. I want them to have been faithful to their wife, love their kids, if they have kids, and mirror my life. And it was as if God was like, all right, buckle up. Hold on.
I got just the dude for you.
I got you.
Yeah.
Yeah. And while she was praying that prayer, I was sitting in a recliner that she made me get rid of. But that recliner.
Sorry.
Just kind of sitting in that recliner. Somebody had spoken something over me one day that was really powerful. And they said, anthony, just because life is different doesn't mean it can't be absolutely amazing. And just that one little seed just kind of took root in my heart, and I just began to see, okay, God does have a plan for me. And I prayed a very simple prayer. God, if you do have someone for me, if you open that door, I'll walk through it until you close it. And we have this painting in our home that is. We think it's a beautiful painting, but it says, life is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again, and it's breathtakingly beautiful. And that's really been our picture. It's been moments where it's been amazing. And then it was awful, but then it's been amazing again. And all of that, the totality of our stories, we look back, we can see God's hand in it all, and it really is breathtakingly beautiful. But I was sitting in that recliner, and I was just scrolling on Instagram, kind of like we do just kind of get lost in the reels, wasting time, watching cat videos or whatever.
Yeah, we do that.
I don't know.
They're just so funny.
Yeah. Just having fun. And all of a sudden, trailer popped up in my Feed. So literally just a random Instagram reel. And it was a trailer for a show called Rebuild and Restore on the Pure Flix Great American Network. And as I was watching this show or this trailer, it was basically a show where they go into widows homes and they'll do a project to rebuild something in their home in an effort to restore their heart. And the co host on that show happened to be Shannon Fields. And just that beautiful blonde haired just filled my screen and I thought, who in the world did this?
That's amazing.
I stopped immediately in my tracks and I just started clicking and started reading more about her story. And what I saw was someone who was living life the way I was desperately trying to do. Because now I'm a single dad. You know, my youngest is about to graduate from high school, trying to figure out colleges and all this stuff alone. And my daughter was trying to help and all these things and pastor at church and still trying to live on purpose. And that's what I saw Shannon do. And so I slid into her DM on Instagram and just said, hey, we've got a lot in common. I'm doing ministry, you're doing ministry. We both have two kids, we both kind of walked a very similar journey. And really it was just an encouragement. I just said, hey, I see you. You're inspiring people. Keep living on purpose because it's making an impact in the world.
Yeah. So I actually took three days to.
She left me on red for three.
Days, but not on purpose.
It was very cold.
He deleted it. So just so you know, if you delete it on your side, it does not delete on the other. Thank God or I wouldn't be sitting here today.
I thank God for Instagram.
Well, I know I started talking to him and talking to him and talking to him, and I stalked you and googled you and all the things. And I would. I don't know, our conversation just kept getting deeper and deeper and, and deeper. And then we started talking, like on the phone. And I'm like, I don't know what is happening. I am on a speedboat. And I am. I'm just. It's almost as if it was like I was watching God take ashes and turn it into something really beautiful. And I didn't know what was happening. It was happening so fast. And I remember we're talking about, well, I think we should meet. And I was like, you know where Atlanta is?
Yeah, that was an invitation.
Oh, there you go.
And he's like, okay, okay, you know where Atlanta is. And then so you came?
I did. Showed up. I was supposed to arrive, like, the next day, but we got there. I got there the night before. And so I said, look, I know we're supposed to meet for breakfast in the morning, but I am here, so I'll be ready to see you tomorrow. And it was late. It was like 11 o'.
Clock. It was late. Well, I had a speaking engagement in Atlanta, but I was already dolled up and dressed up. So I'm like, you know what? I don't want to wait. I said, let's. I'm going to come pick you up. I must have been crazy.
She picked a man up at a.
Hotel that I met on the Internet. I said, I think I've lost my mind.
They're like, what am I doing?
So I texted my daughter and I said, listen, I am going out right now with the pastor. With the pastor? Yes. So make sure I'm on Find My Friends. Yes. He's. It was so funny. So I told him actually where to stay, and I told him to stay at the Holiday Inn Express, which was actually a great place. It was right by the outlets. And I said, I'm coming to pick you up. And we went to the Waffle House.
First thing I know when y' all said that, I'm like, it's a magical place.
You know, Waffle House, you should sponsor this podcast.
I know.
We've given you so much free press.
I'm telling you, this is where love begins.
This is where love begins.
Booth 18. Now, we go to Waffle House all the time.
It's special.
18. And whoever's our waitress, here's our story.
Oh, I love it. Love at the Waffle House.
It's funny because we actually kind of ate off each other's plate that night.
We did.
It was cool. It's like you kind of felt that just familiarity, almost like, didn't make sense, but it was there.
We had talked actually so long on truly hours and hours and hours and hours. I already knew in my heart the love that I had for her. I just had to confirm what I had already figured out. You know what I mean? And it was just.
And the crazy thing is, it's really. I'm sitting here with you. We've been married. We got married October 24th.
Newlyweds.
We are 20, 22, so we are newlyweds, but it feels like we've known each other forever, and only God can do that. He can take so much in our life, heart and grief and all of it, and he really can Do a miracle. That's the thing. If we say yes and if we surrender and we fully trust him, life is hard. There's a lot of times, like circumstantial that that doesn't like change immediately, but he can put joy in your heart. That makes zero sense to us. And we're kind of a walk in miracle on that because we do ministry together with God launched uncovered marriage and our life that we've been married 55 years combined, just not to each other. And we go all over, literally all over the world and speak into the lives of marriages and because our heart is to see marriages just thrive and be what God designed it to be. And I know that's what the enemy wants to take is marriages, because if he can do that, he can destroy the church. Yeah, that's exactly right.
Yeah. And we just, we're trying so hard to just be a living example of what life looks like on the other side of your challenges. Whether it's trauma or whatever that you're facing, life just doesn't turn out the way you dream, hope, plan, or pray that it would all the time. And so what do you do when that happens? And so we talk a lot about what it looks like to heal forward and to heal past your hurt and experience the future that God has for you.
It's funny because throughout all of our talks and all this stuff, we have a lot of fun. So we bring a lot of fun to our uncovered marriage. And it's funny because I'm sitting here across from Dave and Ashley Willis and we bring them into our cars all the time when I'm running or exercising. And I don't know, y' all have inspired us so much. Thank you. With our many inspire us.

Wow.
I feel like, on behalf of the people. We're speaking on behalf of the people because when we launched Uncover Marriage, we were just two people who were figuring out what marriage looked like for us. Yes, we've been married a combined 55 years, but what would it look like for us?
Yeah, of course.
So we did pre marriage counseling, and we started deep diving in resources and trying to read everything that we could just to make sure that our marriage was as solid as it could be. And so, you know, obviously, you were the first place that we came to, and we would listen for hours and share and talk, and so you mentored us. And so, on behalf of the people, I want to say thank you guys for the way that you invest in all of our lives. And what I feel like you often do is give us permission and a framework to talk about things in marriages that many people want to shy away from because they don't know how to talk about it. We share a lot about authentic communication, and there's a great quote that we reference a lot from Susan Scott, that most relationships are two or three conversations away from breakthrough.
Absolutely.
But we just either don't know how to have the conversation or we're afraid to. And so what I feel like you guys do is give us permission. You give us a framework and a place that's safe to talk about things that, as a pastor, nobody wants to talk about in the church.
Yeah, I don't know. It is also with our conferences, it kind of gives us permission to have fun and to speak truth and to, like, we're best friends. Y' all are best friends. And I don't understand why. Why, you know, it's like, we're not enemies together, but so many times we have. We talked to just in our short time that we're doing this, couples that they're literally roommates. And I'm like, that is not the way God designed it. Right. And there's so many things I feel like the enemy is robbing from marriages. And that's why people like you guys and us that have the heart that feel like we are called to challenge people, to go, you know what you need to live your life? What is that you always say that I love so much? Nothing to hide.
We have nothing to hide, Nothing to fear, nothing.
Proof. Oh, that's good. If you have just sell T shirts at your conferences.
I love that.
It is very, very powerful. And a lot of it, like you said, is communication. Well, obviously. Why don't you tell them about our non negotiables?
Yeah. So we just, we decided, what are we going to build this marriage on and what are the things that we will fight to the death on for each other? And you mentioned. Right, of course, just very recently. We have to fight for something.
Against it.
Yes.
Not against.
And so what are we going to fight for? And so for us, it was a Christ centered marriage. We have to put Christ first in every single thing. And that's not just the token thing we say as Christians, but it's absolutely foundational and that we have to have authentic communication. We said from the very beginning that we want to be able to talk about anything, anything, nothing was off limits and not worry about how it was going to change the relationship. I didn't know what I was asking for. When I asked for that, I started asking some questions.
I'm a good question asker.
And I remember thinking, oh, oh, okay. I think I was talking about that.
But at my age, I ain't got time to play.
Exactly.
It's on.
Let's go. Authentic communication. Pure intimacy. A stone wall of protection. How do we protect what it is that God wants to bless? And then what we call ice cream, laughter and memories. Just how to date your spouse and be your best friend. You said something, Dave, that has really just kind of echoed in my mind and heart. And it was, why don't we laugh together as a husband and wife? And that's one thing I've gained from watching you guys is just the way that you interact and the way that you almost give us an example of how to have these conversations too, but give us an example of how to talk to one another. And the joy that you guys have and the excitement about marriage is contagious.
It is. And it's really cool because when I look like I love couples doing ministry together, like I look at you guys, I'm like, you're a power couple. Like, not to mention, like you love Jesus with everything. You love people big. And it shows. Like it shows. And even if you're just listening, like you can see it, you can see it. Then on the socials, it's like you are living the life that you are portraying to people. You're the real deal.
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
You really are. And you just inspire us because as a woman to woman, I don't know if you get this as you're on stage and you're up there with Dave. I get. And I get young girls to come up and say, keep doing what you're doing. Because it inspires us that we can stand on that stage. Absolutely. And we can do that because you're role models. In the majority, it is usually the men that's up there. So giving women permission to get up there and speak and be used by the Lord, I mean, I'm like, that's. When I look at you, that's what I see. And I don't know, I just love it. I love to see you guys doing ministry.
You guys are such a.
Great seeing you guys.
Well, we were getting ready at the hotel. I was like, we're going to see Daddy Nashley.
I said, we've been all day. We're going to see Anthony and Shannon.
They're coming. I'm so glad. And I just. I love how you all are so real and honest about the hard stuff you've been through, but also really pointing to hope, like, really pointing to God still has a hope in his future for you. Like, your life's not over. And I would love for y' all to share, you know, for somebody watching or listening, like, maybe they're in. Like, maybe it's. They're in a hard time in their marriage right now and they're trying to push through, or maybe they lost their spouse. We have a lot of even single people who've never been married who were like, am I ever going to meet my person? Or maybe they were recently divorced, even. Maybe their spouse left them. You know, there's a lot of people going through tragedy right now, and it could be too, that maybe they're walking through similar to what you guys went through. Maybe their spouse is ill. I just. I would love to hear from you all if you could sit and have coffee with those people. Where would you start that conversation?
Do you have something?
Yeah. Because every one of those. I might start completely different. Every one of those situations.
Sure.
Common thread through it all. It would be, you have to. You have to put Jesus first.
Yes.
In it all. And I'm truly not saying that as a token thing. I know that's. That's the Christian. It's the pastor response. I'm truly saying he's everything. And I know there were moments where I was frustrated and I was angry and I would want to push him aside because life wasn't turning out the way that I wanted it to and everything. That one thing that every one of those people you just described have in common is they're praying for something that they're not seeing an answer to just yet.
Exactly.
They're in the middle. I heard one person say, you know, when God closes a door, he often opens a door, but it always doesn't happen immediately. Sometimes there's distance. There's a hallway between those two doors.
And he says, we don't like the hallways.
Hell in the hallways. But it's so true. And so I never had a crisis of faith, but I did have a crisis of theology. I knew there was nothing that God couldn't do. I just wasn't sure I knew how to get him to. And so I remember reaching out to a friend one day, and I said, what do you do when you're in the fight? And what you described was a fight for all of those people.
Yes.
And I'll never forget what he said. He said, you believe that there's nothing that God can't do. So even in the middle of it, you just believe. And I've heard you say over and over, I mean, even in hospice, you just believe that Jimmy was coming home. Even in those moments, we just believed.
This is the way we lived our life. That's the way we live our life right now. And I know that it always turns out sometimes different than you're praying, but at the same time, he hears everything that you're praying. And his way is definitely better than our way. But the thing is, like, he knows us better. He created us. And for me, when I'm praying God, if you have me for somebody, I did not truly believe, because sometimes it's really hard to believe when you're in it absolutely for yourself. I didn't believe that my future was going to be as good as my past.
Right.
Yeah.
Because I was thanking him for it. Right. And I heard him say, watch me. Yeah, watch me. I had no idea how he was going to do it. But you have to. What? Believe that he can tell him what he said. And then he said, but what I want you to do. And I really literally heard the Holy Spirit say this to me, not audibly, but in my heart.
Right in your heart.
Watch me. But you're gonna have to get in the backseat, and you're gonna have to let me drive. But you can have all the ice cream you want, Any flavor. But you're gonna have to let me do this.
She chose his flavor.
She chose Anthony flavor.
It's the best flavor.
So believe that there's nothing God can't do. And then she said, pray. Pray bold prayers that honor God. Because God honors Bold prayers.
This is the thing he hears. And I'm such a visual person. I mean, creative in film and all that. So I don't know if this happens. This is the way I see it. Like all the prayers, sometimes we get weary. Just keep praying, keep. It's almost like there's a bucket on top of our head. And you just keep praying. You keep praying, you keep believing. And then one day in God's timing, when he's ready to answer the prayers that he has for you, just dumps all over us. And then it's way better than you thought it was going to ever be. Because he does do miracles. He does miracles in marriages, he does miracles in lives that you think that will never be the same, from grief to whatever loss to trying to find their person, you know, because I believe God, he cares about every little thing you care about.
Absolutely.
And the enemy wants to tell you, you don't care about that. You'll never have your person. You're never going to have that joy or that or that or that. But I think a lot of the times what he's calling us to is to him first, seek him, seek him first, Seek him all the time. Seek him, seek him, seek him, and then watch him work.
That's so good.
And that's really that third thing. So believe, pray. And then the final thing is trust him, regardless of the outcome.
Trust? Yes.
You just gotta trust him. And you say all the time, you say it's a hundred percent trust and it's a hundred percent. What's to surrender?
Yes.
Yeah. We have to 100% surrender.
That's the hard part, isn't it? Because we would like to hold on.
To a little bit.
I want to. I want to control it all.
Yeah, sure.
I. I'm like, I want to do this and this and we're going to do this. But like now, like, with our ministry, like, there's things that we want, we. We want to, like, connect with people and do. In my old self, I'd be. I'm going to. Now, I believe that we're supposed to go after stuff. We are supposed to go after stuff. You know, God's not gonna just do all that. You gotta do some stuff yourself. But then you gotta also trust. If there's a door that's shut. Yes. Because there's a better one that's open or that's a protection. Instead of getting all upset about it, go, okay, all right, what's the next one? And I think that we're pretty good at saying yes. To the Lord. We'll do scary things. I've lived my life afraid my whole life. I'm not saying that's the best way to live it, but I want to live my life in a way that is honoring to the Lord, number one, and then number two, that I give him room to work, where I step out of the way, because he knows I'm going to say yes, but I also have to get out of the way.
Yeah. And we got to take that next step. And I think for every one of us, we all have a next step.
Yes, we do.
Wherever we are in the journey, there's a next step. And I think we often get stuck because we get paralyzed by our fear.
We do.
And I grew up somehow believing that faith and fear could not coexist in the same space. And we talk about this. Talk about this a lot. But that was wrong theology, because we've learned over the last couple of years that faith is not the absence of fear. It is the ability to trust God in the face of it.
In the face of it. Yeah.
Take that next step. And so part of the mission for us is to help people identify what their next step is and then have the courage to take it.
That's right.
So good, y'.
All.
That was gold.
Like, man.
Yeah, take that back. Like, go back.
People don't rewind anymore.
Don't rewind anymore.
Whatever they call it now.
Go back, skip back. Because it is. I just think I know those people watching and listening in the midst of that hallway of hell. I mean, for lack of a better word, it's okay to say hell, you guys. I mean, it's in the Bible. Well, I mean, you know, but it's like there are parts of our life where it feels like, like, when does this end? I don't see the door at the end of this hallway. I know God is good, and I'm believing he's good, but, man, it's hard in this hallway. And I just love what you all said and just really focusing on God and, you know, getting. Taking your next step and getting towards trust and surrender and just seeking Him. Constantly seeking Him. That's amazing. And I think clinging to that, you know, you guys are such amazing examples of that, of doing things. Scared, you know, I mean, dating again after the loss of a spouse. I can't imagine.
I mean, the longest ride, y', all, from Raleigh to Atlanta.
Yes.
First time. Yes. And I didn't know how to greet her.
Like, what do I do here?
So I'm like, yeah, so seek Relationship advice from one person. Okay. I call my 85 year old father and I'm like, dad, I don't know what to do.
I'm so scared, dad.
He said, all right, if it goes, if it goes well, give her a good firm handshake when you meet her.
Okay.
And if it goes well, you give her a good hug when you. That was my dad.
That's good advice.
Take that advice. Threw it right out the window.
And a firm. All about, but a firm handshake, I'm about the. If you're gonna shake a hand, let it be a firm one. Like, that's good advice.
We didn't do that.
Did you hug it?
So literally, I'm driving to the Holiday Inn Express now. He's waiting on me outside. I'm picking him up, like I said, going to the Waffle House, so scared. And one of the things that I had prayed and I am like, I. I guess mine is physical touch. My love language, my first love language is physical touch. And then the next is words of affirmation. Yes. And when my late husband, he lost his arms first and I was missing hugs, I was missing the embrace. I mean, I would give it to him, but then having it back. And I'm like, lord, I need a hug. I need a hook. Yes. I'm like, I don't know. I didn't want to hug for my girl. I wanted a hug from a man that's different. And I'm like, I don't know if he's my person. Not sure yet. Because I'm not sure if he smells good or not. I can't smell the phone. That's true.
But I also can't judge height. I'm a scared.
Oh, you're right.
Yeah. There's a lot you don't know, but.
I just need a hug. And so when I pulled up, got out of the car, we didn't say one word. We hugged for about 10 or 15 minutes straight. And he smelled so good. And I knew. I'm like, that's amazing. You're my person. I don't know how earlier, earlier when I, when the Lord was telling me to get in the backseat, he also deposited in my spirit that he was my person. And I did question him because like I said, I had met him.
It made no sense.
It made zero sense to me how I can even think this thing through. I'm like, how can this be? But we, I don't know, we embraced in such a. It was quite amazing. It's hard to. It's Like, God, only you can do this, and you can take all of that hurt and all that hard. And I knew that he had walked out that hard and that hurt. And as time went on and we knew that we wanted to get married, and we talked, and we're like, you know, we want to make sure as we move forward, and, you know, obviously, he's a pastor and a speaker, and I'm a speaker as well and an actress. When we share our story, we want to make sure that we honor Jimmy and Maryanne. I mean, we're who we are because of them and our kids.
We drew so much strength from them as they walked through their difficult. They didn't complain. You know, everything that they did was really with purpose and trust in the Lord and leaving a legacy. And we feel like the ministry that we do together just continues their legacy.
Yes. Yes.
One of the things that Coach Jimmy would often say is live this day in view of that day, in view of eternity. And so we're really living our lives that way and trust in the Lord and in the middle of difficult things, just doing our best to steward it.
Well.
Yeah, I know. I mean, it's crazy. I'm like, we're not perfect people, and we just want to do the next right thing. I mean. And I would say, like, the people out there that just. If. There was a podcast that I was on, it's called Women in My World, and it's with Sherry Rigby. And one of the questions she asked me when I got there, it was in the thick of my grief, and she said, shannon, how do you define success?
That's a big question.
I said, I got here today.
I was just gonna say, day back, I got here.
I showed up. So there are people that might be listening right now. They're like, well, how do I get where you are? How do I get there with that joy? Well, you show up that day.
That's good.
And then the next day, you show up again, and then you do it again and again. And as the process of you showing up, God will reveal his plan for your life.
