Hey there. Welcome back to Summer of Scripture on the Naked Marriage podcast. Today we are in Romans. It is day 45. We are in chapter 12, verse 10. It says this. Love each other with a genuine infection and take delight in honoring each other.
I think he said infection.
Did I? Let's start off. Did I say infection? Did I say.
That?
Coffee kit goes with a genuine infection. If you've got genuine infections, you need to get some ointment.
Go to the doctor. Oh, gosh.
Get some help for that.
Did I say infection?
I think it was infection.
We can keep going. It's okay. Okay, let me say that again, guys. Love each other with genuine affection, not infection, and take delight in honoring each other. I love it.
That's perfect.
I'm sorry, my accent's going all over the place.
Well, you know, I love your accent, first off, and this is a great marriage version. Genuine affection and take delight in honoring each other. I mean, imagine how your marriage would look if we all took delight. We loved honoring our spouse. Like, lifting them up, praising them, celebrating them, honoring them. Man, like, that's a recipe for a good marriage.
It changes, I mean, everything. I think that honor, honor is something we need to bring back more and more into our culture as a whole, even across the world. You know, I think long gone are the days of honor. Like, I think that for generations, we used to honor more. You know, husbands and wives would honor each other and even like, honoring our elders and things like that. And for some reason, we've kind of lost sight of that. So especially in marriage, let's reclaim the practice of honoring each other. And what does that look like in today's society? I think it looks like, you know, just really being mindful of how you can speak kindly and nicely to your spouse, but also about your spouse to other people. I think it's finding good things in your spouse and speaking those out, like, really speaking it out to them, but also to other people. I think even simple things like chivalry, like opening a door, you know, giving. You know, letting your spouse go before you to order or to do something. I mean, just being. Being thoughtful.
Thoughtfulness, that's the key word, I think. Words like honor, words like romance, sometimes it intimidates us because, like, I can't get my mind around what that means. But thoughtful, like, that's really what we're saying. And thoughtful is as simple as doing things to let your spouse know, I care. I care. I'm considering you. I'm thinking about you in all things. You know, the book of Romans is just so theologically rich. It is. There's so much in there, guys. I mean, read it and reread it. And just the one chapter In Romans, chapter 12, where this verse was taken, it's been called by some the most practical chapter in the whole Bible for what Christian living should look like.
Yes.
Just in one chapter. I know a guy named Chip Ingram, has a whole book on our 12 living Romans. Being a Romans 12 Christian, because that. That chapter starts with, in view of God's mercy, offer yourself as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship. The very next verse, one of my favorites, says, don't conform to the pattern of this world, but instead be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you'll be able to test and approve what God's will is. His good, his pleasing, his perfect will. And then it just kind of goes on from there. And with so much practical wisdom, including this verse. And then that chapter ends with saying, don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Yes, yes.
And so if the whole book of Romans is too intimidating, you kind of dive in and tackle camp out in Romans chapter 12.
Right.
And you can read that whole chapter in. It's not like a chapter in, like, a regular novel, which would, you know, take a longer time. A chapter in the Bible could take you five minutes, maybe.
Sure. Yeah.
And take five minutes a day over the course of this week and read Romans chapter 12 each day. I think it would make a real difference as those principles sink in and apply. And think about, what does this verse mean to my marriage? What does it mean to not conform to the world's way of doing stuff, but instead let God renew my mind as it relates to my marriage? And I think you'll have a new perspective about marriage by the end.
Definitely.

And I love these. You know, Paul, the Apostle Paul is writing to the church in Rome, you know, the early church, trying to be new Christians, trying to live out this Christian living. And so, yes, he's talking to them as brothers and sisters in Christ. But I think we forget that this totally applies to us as a married couple. You know, I actually read a book recently by John Piper called the Momentary Marriage, where he. One of the things he said that I guess I'd never really thought about is he's like, we forget that as husband and wife and as being a Christian couple, we are also a brother and sister in Christ. And I know that sounds very weird, and you're like, wait a minute, we're.
From Kentucky, where it's not that weird to be related.
That is weird. He loves making Kentucky jokes to all of our Kentucky friends and family. I'm so sorry, but no, she didn't.
Even have to change her last name when we got married.
We are not part of the same tree. Okay. So anyway, new we. We are a whole new union here. But anyway, when it comes to, you know, being brothers and sisters in Christ, don't get too lost in the whole brother sister thing. It just means, like, that we're family in Christ. Even before we were family by marriage.
You know, it's true.
And I think that because of that, all of, like, these letters from Paul, you know, to the churches, the early churches, especially when it comes to how we treat each other, it applies so much so to how we should treat each other as husband and wife. And that's why I love how, you know, Dave picked out this verse in particular, and I love how he picked out. You could have picked out pretty much any of these in Romans 12 especially.
But the Genuine Book of Roman, I mean, it's just.
It's hard to even pick one. But I love the genuine affection. And I think that's being. You know that word, genuine affection. It's like, be authentic. Be authentically kind and loving. And, you know, when it comes to affection, too, I think sometimes we just think physical, but it's just kind of in how you treat each other. I mean, it includes physical, obviously, but how you interact with your spouse, how you do touch them and how you just love them practically on the daily. Be genuine about it. Like, really be thoughtful. Be genuine. Be intentional with being a loving spouse. Like, make it your mission to just always know that you are showing them in your words and your actions and in the affection that you give them, that they are deeply loved by you.
And you do that for me. Every day you do that for me. And I just am so. I'm so blessed to have you as my wife.
I'm so blessed to have you and.
Apparently as my sister, I was gonna.
Say, and I'm glad you're not my brother, but you are my brother in Christ.
All right, I'll take it.
Yes.
