Don’t Let THEM Hold You Back

Dean Graziosi argues you should build on what you're good at instead of fixing weaknesses, and get crystal-clear on your goals by asking yourself "why" seven levels deep. He shares stories from his childhood of poverty and instability, then walks through how to take action now instead of waiting to be perfect.

Biggest lie we've ever been told is to work on our weaknesses. All that does is rob your confidence. There's people in this room right now that are living an okay life because you feel that you're not good enough. You're not smart enough in a certain area. You're not good at bookkeeping. You're afraid. It's sales. You're not that organized. Screw all that. Get amazing at what you're good at and pay someone to do the stuff you suck at. Welcome to the Dean Graziosi Show. All success starts right here. We all have goals. We all have our desire of where we want to be, right? But I'm gonna urge you, and I'm gonna spend more time throughout the weekend. I'm gonna urge you to get crystal clear on your goals. Fuzzy goals. You can't hit a target. It's hard to hit a fuzzy target. It's hard to hit your goals when you're not crystal clear. You see, we spend a lot of time thinking about what we don't want. I'm gonna encourage you and go deeper on it. This weekend is to find out exactly what it is you do want. Crystal clear. When people say they don't have time. When someone says, I need a time management course, I said, no. You need a better vision and clarity on where it is that you want to go, because you're saying yes to way too much stuff. You see, you guys are, for lack of a better word. I wanna swear a little bit in front of my kids. I'll try to keep it good, but you guys are a room of badasses. When you want something done, who do you ask? The busiest person. You know, this room is the. You are the busiest people. Other people know. That's why you're here. Listen, there's a million other things you could be doing. Let's be honest. There's a million things that would be more fun. Maybe a concert, going on a vacation. But you're here because you want to gain the capabilities to go to another level. So that already shows me who you are. But I want to encourage you to be crystal clear on what it is you really want. So if you and I got in an elevator this afternoon and we went up just four floors, you could tell me precisely where it is you want to go. And then how do you obsess on how to get there? Because life's too short to have a fuzzy target. Life's too short to focus on what you don't want, because all we'll do is get More of that. So I want to. I'm going to go deeper on that later. But I want to share. If your goals are clear, then who in here has read about my seven levels deep, right? Anybody do that exercise? Is that life changing or what? But I want to share with you if you know where you want to go, if you know the why, if you know the vision. I want to make $10,000 a month by July. If you know where you want to go. What anchors that in? What anchors that to go to another level is why do you want it? Why do you want it? Why did you come here? Why did you cut a check? Why did you fly across the country? The inconvenience. Why now in most reasons, I'm going to share mine. You could put that up on the screen for a second. You'll see the hashtag this weekend of itookcontrol. I guess they didn't hear me. You could put that on the screen anyway. The hashtag itookcontrol is selfish. Because my why is that I do want to be in control of my life. The same as yours back there from Scottsdale. I want to be in control. You see, when I went through this exercise, which I'll go a little deeper on tomorrow, is I've always been working hard since I was a little kid. I did my first gun that I wanted to buy to go rabbit hunting. I went to my grandmother's and all the neighbors and I cleaned out their garages and I did garage sales and I raised that money to buy my first BMX bike and my first shotgun to go rabbit hunting with my grandfather. And I've always worked hard, but I never really knew why. And then when I went through the exercise and really dug deep, because in most cases, we think we want financial freedom. You want to make $10,000 a month. If I had time to go through that with you, I'd say, why do you want to make $10,000 a month? And you'd tell me, maybe because you want to be more in control or you want freedom. And why do you want freedom? When we go from our thoughts in our head to the emotions in our heart, we start getting the whys that anchor our goals to become reality. And I'd encourage everybody. The reason I said I took control is because I went through this exercise and I remember going through the questions of why I worked so hard, why did I want to make more money? And when I really got into it, I realized it really wasn't the money. It was so much deeper when I felt this transition. When you do this process, it's in the beginning of my book. You all have a copy of my book now, maybe you had it already, but when you go through this process, you can feel it go from your thoughts to your heart. And when it goes from your thoughts to your heart, you're anchored in a way that nothing will get you and put you on that course towards your goals. Now, we're going to talk about specific things that got me there, but you need a strong enough why? And when I went deep, I realized that I was saying I wanted to create a legacy for my family. I wanted to create a business and set a standard, super high standard in this industry that people had to step up or step out. Like, this is why I thought I worked so hard. But when I really dug in and I kept asking myself, well, why do you want to set a legacy? Why do you want your business to do so well? It really hit my heart. And for me, my top three, and a lot of you know this, but when I got to it, I remember saying, I want to be in control of my life. Let me back up before I get that. I don't want to give you the punchline yet. I remember the third one. I never want to go backwards. When we were kids, my mom's here right now. I watched my mom work two jobs to make $90 a week and struggle to support me and my sister. And I didn't want that. I never wanted to go backwards. I didn't want to live in a trailer park. I didn't like that we had an old car that I would ask her to drop me off a block from school so we wouldn't get made fun of. I didn't like that. So I didn't want to go backwards. And that started to hit my emotions. That's a strong emotion, not to go back. But then as I was doing this exercise, I was going through these seven levels deep. The gentleman I was doing with said, well, why do you not want to go backwards? And if you're a parent, you know, I thought about my two children, and I started to get emotional tears coming out of my eyes. And I said, I want my kids to have choices. I don't want to raise entitled brats. Sorry, guys, but I want them to have choices when they're older. And all of a sudden, I was really into my heart. But then there was one more question left. It was seven levels deep. And he asked me, why do I want my kids to have choices? And that was where I Got. I took control because I said, I want to be in complete control of my life. And what that meant for me is everything. As a kid, we did struggle, and we moved a lot. We moved 20 times. By the time I was 19 years old, we had a million different houses. And we'd be in a certain house with different stepbrothers and stepsisters, some of them which are here right now. And we'd be in a house, and everything would be fine. And then we'd move, and then we'd move someplace else. Then I'd move in with my dad. Then I'd move someplace with my dad. And then his house hadn't had any heat, so we lived in a bathroom with my dad. And I realized at that moment, again, we all have our story. At that moment. I don't want anybody to tell me how to live. I wanted to be in complete control of my life. I coach little league. I coach softball. If I want to be with those kids in the middle of the day, I want to pick them up from school. I want to do it every single time. I don't want somebody to tell me when I could take a vacation, when I can coach. I go to every practice I can possibly go to. I like going to practice if I want to do that. I want to be in control. Today I had a sports jacket and a button shirt on. And a minute before, I'm like, now I'm just going to wear a T shirt and jeans because I'm in control. It's what I wanted to wear. Hey, Jeremy, Somebody could bring me a bottle of water. So that's where I took control. So I don't know what it means to you, but to me, I want to live the way I want. I want to dress the way I want. I want to talk the way I want. I feel blessed that I got to retire both my parents. I want to just. I wanted to take things and be in control of my life because it felt so out of control. So I don't know what your why is, but that's the hashtag itookcontrol. My OBM Organized Brilliance members, they know what that means. And you'll see some shirts with that on it. And that's what it is. It's like, find your why that's strong enough to drive you towards those goals. Does that make sense? Can I hear you up again? Okay. So I said before about play in full out. Play full out. And I say, play full out. I'll do the best of my ability to keep the emotions and the energy up. But you need to engage, be an active participant in your own success. And I say that because here's what I know. I wasn't that smart in school. I barely got out of high school. My last year of high school, I had, I think, gym, ceramics, math and English. I was out by 11 o' clock and my ceramics teacher was so cool because he was always stoned, I think, smoking pot. I actually watched my ceramics teacher make a bong. It was like in the kiln. And I went in early one day and I'm like, oh, is this a weird flower pot? It's got a hole in the side. It's going to leak now that I'm older. I'm like. He was probably like, oh, yeah, that's from my mom. I don't know. But I wasn't that good at school. I don't have a vast vocabulary. You're going to hear a lot of amazing, excited, fun. I don't have a vast vocabulary. If I write. I mean, if a computer could talk. When I type, there's so many misspelled words. And sometimes. Is anybody a bad speller like me? I'm not kind of bad. I'm the worst speller on the planet. I sometimes spell a word and I try three or four versions and I can't even get the computer close enough to tell me what the word is. Like, if my computer could talk to me, it'd be like, idiot. Just stop. And then I'm like, okay, exciting. And I probably spelled that wrong. But so what I know is that I spent a lot of years when I felt not that smart in school, when I was in special reading, I felt that I was just going to get from life what I could. If I could make $1,000 a week someday doing construction because my guidance counselor already told me that I'd be really good in like a factory or working on cars. Not that working on cars at bad time. But she informed me where I was supposed to go. And what I didn't realize at that age and what a lot of kids don't, is you're being judged by an outdated scorecard. At the time, they didn't realize that I could watch somebody do something once and be able to do it exactly that way. I can't read a book to this day. It doesn't sink in. But I can listen to one every seven days and remember every word. I was just judged wrong. And that leads me, and I'm gonna take two seconds, and you probably have read this, but I wanna say it in person to you. The biggest lie we've ever been told is to work on our weaknesses. All that does is rob your confidence. There's people in this room right now that are living an okay life because you feel that you're not good enough. You're not smart enough in a certain area, you're not good at bookkeeping, you're afraid at sales, you're not that organized. Screw all that. Get amazing at what you're good at and pay someone to do the stuff you suck at. Does that sound right? But we're taught through school, we're taught through life that we have to get good at everything. It's just simply not true. Every entrepreneur I know, every successful person I know, they just found what drove them and got them excited and went for it. So I want to encourage you to not be fooled by that. Working on your weaknesses. Don't hold that back. That's. Well, I could if I had all those thoughts. I mean, I wrote a book. Someone who was in special reading barely got out of high school. I wrote a book, for gosh sakes. I felt so insecure. My first book. And then I give it to my editor, and my editor calls me up and says, hey, I just want to tell you this doesn't need a rewrite or this doesn't need an edit. It needs a whole new rewrite. This isn't a book. It's a 300 page conversation. Don't put this out there. Really, you don't want to. And I almost threw the book in the garbage because I started thinking, oh, who am I to think I could write? I'm not that smart. That's for people who go to college. All those limiting beliefs, all those negative stories. And then finally I found myself saying, no, I just want to give a message to somebody. I don't think people care if it's written perfect, if it sounds like a conversation great. Almost threw that book away. And I kid you not, I was an inch away from deleting the whole book and saying, forget about that. I'm great at real estate. I shouldn't have tried to write books. And that book hit the New York Times best seller list in 10 days. My first book. So I didn't mean to go down that path. But I'm really passionate about that. Because if I would have listened to my guidance counselor, if I were to listen to Ms. Thompson in seventh grade, if I would have listened to everybody else, I'd be living their life. Instead, I'm living mine. I encourage you to live yours. Thank you. So. Okay, so now let's get to it. So before we get into some rules and some actions, I think that you guys can immediately apply into your life to make your goals a reality, I want to talk about. Enthusiasm will always outweigh perfection and preparation. I told you all that stuff about the things I'm not so good at for a reason, because I got through life the first part, especially by being enthusiastic. My enthusiasm outweighed that I'm not that intelligent, that I don't have an great iq. All I know is there's so many people that will obsess on making sure everything's perfect before they engage, making sure everything is prepared perfectly. And years go by. You're much better off getting enthusiasm and jumping in the game and learning as you go jump out of the plane and. And hope the chute opens on the way down. Hope most of the time it does. You can't score a touchdown being on the sidelines, but you sure can if you're in the game. So I want you guys to give yourselves a break right now, because some of you, if it is real estate, you haven't made your first deal. You haven't talked to a seller or a buyer yet because you're thinking, maybe I'm not an expert yet. I need to get a little more prepared. I need a little more time under my belt. The hell with that. Get in the game. Get enthusiastic. Get enthusiasm, and just take action. Action creates momentum. Knowledge without action is just good reading, like we said before. And when you find enthusiasm. Let me just back up. So where do you find enthusiasm? And here's what I say is, I borrow mine from the past when I want to be enthusiastic. I look backwards. On times that I was scared and. And still did it. On times when I thought it was gonna go wrong, but I made it happen. On times where I had incredible accomplishments, on times where I felt amazing, felt alive, it could be something completely different. It could be a first relationship. It could be anything that lights you up. And borrow that enthusiasm and put it in today's time. Because what it does is it also changes your state of mind. Because here's what I know. When your enthusiasm is down, when you're thinking about everything being perfect, perfect. When you're thinking about one step at a time, are you in the right space to take action? When your confidence is down, do you take action? Or do you say, how about when your confidence is down just a little bit and you watch the news or you get a friend, tell you, oh, stop dreaming or the economy's gonna crash or the market's gonna crash. If your confidence is down, your enthusiasm is down. How does that hit you compared to when you feel on fire? Right. When you're down and your confidence is just 10% off, you go, well, yeah, maybe things are good enough the way they are. Maybe I'll just leave it where it is. The hell with that. Borrow the enthusiasm from the past and attack each day.
