How To Steer Your Ship To Success - Millionaire Success Habits Podcast
9 Apr 2018 · 7 min
Dean Graziosi (Millionaire Success Habits podcast) explains how people around you can unintentionally limit your success by draining confidence and encouraging you to play small. He contrasts two mindsets — "bigger future" versus "bigger past" — and offers practical heuristics (think in terms of "battery chargers" vs "battery drainers"; ask whether you'd trade lives with the advisor) to protect your confidence and surround yourself with positive influences. The episode closes with standard podcast CTAs and a link to a free book.

What if you're letting someone in your life be the wedge between you and the level of success you desire? With all the opportunities that exist today, why haven't you reached your next level of income, life and wealth? In most cases, we've been lied to. We've been told that if you find the right opportunity and you work hard, you can be successful. And that's simply not true. Millionaires, billionaires, and successful people have realized you need the foundation for wealth, the habits. And that's exactly what you'll be learning on the Millionaire Success Habits podcast. All success starts here. All right, today I want to talk about how people in your life negatively affect you, keep you stuck, keep you wondering, and you don't even realize why. Let me ask you, who in your life do you have to apologize to for the goals that you have, for the dreams that you have? Maybe they feel you are a dreamer, that you're setting expectations too high, that you downplay. You dim your glow. You turn your light down, turn your fire down. You turn your enthusiasm down when you're around them. Now, this doesn't mean it's bad. People could be your parents, could be your husband, could be your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, friends, family. Here's the thing to realize. About 98% of the world accept the life that they've been given. They accept status quo. They're okay with listening to someone else. They're okay with making a certain amount of money per year. They're okay with everything being okay. If you're listening to me or you're watching me right now, that's not you. You're searching for the edge. You're searching for the unfair advantage. So guess what? You're in the 2%. You are the oddball. You're the one that feels weird in conversations when people are excited about the promotion or the job that you feel is a death sentence. When you know you have fire inside of you, you have more to give the world. So guess what? Get used to it. On your journey, you're going to come across all new friends. You're going to lose old friends for a while. You. You're going to get people in your life who love you that try to suppress you. And they're going to want to hold you back. And here's the thing. You have a couple options in your life. You can let them dim your glow. You can let them turn down your fire, or you can realize it's not their fault. So let me just ask you again. I want to go back to this. Who in your Life makes you feel bad about your dreams, your goals, your desires, because those people are affecting you whether you realize it or not. When you have a desire for that next level, something, someone negative, someone trying to protect you, tells you you shouldn't, you can't. You might say, no, I'm not listening to them. But even if 5% of that rubs off on you, then you might make different choices. You might play a little bit smaller than you need to. Your confidence could be crushed just a little bit more than it needs to be crushed. You know, confidence is a weird thing. Confidence doesn't go from 0 to 100 in my eyes. Confidence. If your confidence is down 5%, you're screwed. Because you're going to play small. You're going to play safe. Do you think, in today's world, do you think being good at something with most of your conf. Do you think being excellent with 90% of your confidence is enough? Hell, no. You need to be freaking outstanding. You need to rock it with your confidence at a hundred percent. And how can your confidence be at 100% if you're letting people in your life make you dim your glow, to lower your expectations, to play safer. So here's. You got to realize, most cases, they're not doing it to hurt you. Sometimes they're just afraid to step up themselves. Sometimes they think they're protecting you. Sometimes they're letting limiting beliefs run their life because something failed or they went bankrupt or they had a bad relationship. So they're projecting their future on your. You don't have to buy their life. Listen, I was told over and over, you don't have enough money. You didn't go to college. You're not smart enough. My own sister sat me down, literally drove up from Virginia when I wanted to go into the education and infomercial business and told me, dean, enough is enough. You are a dreamer. That got you here. But that's going to crash you. Stop it. What if I did? What if I didn't write that first book, do that first infomercial? I wouldn't be able to touch the lives of millions of people, change my life, change the legacy, retire my parents. All those things happen. Guess what? They were all wrong. Not that they're bad people. They were in the 98th percentile. So here's what I want you to do. I'm going to give you a couple hacks right now. First off, remember, there's two types of people. There's bigger future people and there's bigger past people. Bigger past people say Things were better when we had a different economy, a different president, a different era. When they were in college, when opportunity was great, when the Internet wasn't so bad, when there wasn't so much negativity, when there wasn't so much crime, when there's all these things. The past was bigger. Those people are screwed. They live in a bigger past mindset. They will always look backwards. They will be looking in their rearview mirror for the rest of their lives. Then there's bigger future people. That's you. You're watching me right now. You. Let me ask you, are you going to make more? Do you want to make more money next year than you're making now? Do you want to be happier next year? Do you want to be in better shape next year? Do you look forward to all the new things coming? New technology, new life, new opportunities? Of course you do. You wouldn't be watching or listening to me right now. So you're a bigger future person. So here's the problem. When you're around someone with a bigger past, they're a battery drainer. They literally like plug into you and they suck the freaking life out of you without realizing. So, real simple, think of people as bigger future, bigger past. Or you can think of them as battery drainers or battery chargers. Try to find and spend more time with battery chargers. Hopefully when you're done listening to me and hanging out with me right now, you feel charged. You feel excited. Do more of that. Get more of those people. If you don't have them in your direct life, get them. You have access online, on podcasts, on Instagram, Find the people who inspire you, that light you up, that talk about a bigger future, that charge your batteries and spend less time with with the opposite. Here's the other thing to remember. When people give you advice, even if they think they're protecting you, immediately think, this. This is what I do. This is a hack. I immediately say, would I replace my life with theirs tomorrow? When I woke up and looked in the mirror, would I rather be them or me? Think about that. It's the broke friend telling you how to make money. It's your single friend telling you how to fix your relationship. That's what happens in life. The people that aren't qualified to give us advice surely do. And all of a sudden, if it affects our, like I said, a little bit, it affects our ability to move forward. It makes us question ourselves, then guess what? We play small and we stay suck, stay stuck. So here's what I want you to think about today. Who's the battery chargers and who's the battery drainers in your life? And the battery drainers might be someone, might be your spouse, might be someone you love, could be your parents. You don't have to hate them. But what you have to do is figure out a way to be more Teflon. You have to figure out a way to make sure that they don't affect your life. They don't rob your confidence, they don't. They don't rob your ability to move forward. And if they do, you got to change.
