How To Unlock Your Power Of Persuasion
25 Nov 2019 · 9 min
Dean Graziosi argues that desperation and an underdog mindset can fuel persuasive power. He uses George Washington's Delaware crossing as an example of how that energy motivates others to act, and connects it to his own success and people he knows.

Okay, today I want to talk about turning desperation into persuasion. What the heck does that mean? Welcome to the Dean Graziosi show. All success starts right here. Hey, it's Dean. And I'm so excited you're here listening or watching right now, depending on when you're listening to this. I'm so stoked because we're only a couple days away from launching my new book, the Underdog Advantage. So I'm talking about being an underdog a lot because most of us feel like an underdog or we felt like one in the past and we feel like we just don't have all the pieces of the puzzle or we don't have the right money. It's not the right timing. I get all that. Every successful person I've ever met in my life has been there. But how did they use that as a stepping stool to go to their next level of life? Well, so many people use it as an anchor holding them in one spot, and I've identified that. But this video, this training, this audio is about sharing one of those pieces. And that's turning desperation into persuasion. See what I've acknowledged in my own life and what I've acknowledged in so many successful people. Every underdog that I've analyzed and observed, even ones that were mentors from afar, like George Washington, I listened to a 42 hour book on George Washington. So what does that mean? Turn desperation into persuasion. You see underdogs or adopting an underdog mindset. So if you're not an underdog, you need an underdog mindset. I've never let mine go. My wife has never let hers go and she's such an amazing hustler. Every successful from Tony Robbins to John Paul DiGiorio to Richard Branson, every successful person I've been able to spend time with, my dear friend John Langbein. All these great people, what did they do? They were underdogs. And then when they became not an underdog, they kept the underdog mindset. Right. Because they're the traits that got them there. And sometimes when people get complacent, when, when they feel privileged, when they feel it's going easy, what happens? The business falls, the company goes out of business, sales go down, revenues go down, and we don't want that. So you keep an underdog mindset. So persuasion comes from desperation in so many ways. So think about this going back to George Washington. He's one of my favorite people. After especially, I read a lot of books on George Washington, but this last one kind of just clinched it. He's the quintessential underdog, the ultimate underdog who turned it into his biggest advantage in the entire world and took a ragtag army of 5,7,000 people and started a revolution that looked like it was done in the first battle. And still, seven years later, America became America. How the hell did that happen? Well, lots of reasons, but one of them was his desperation turned into persuasion. So I've told this story before, but I hope you'll listen to it again if you've heard it. And if not, it's new to you, but George Washington in the second war on American soil. The second battle, not war, Second battle on American soil. A little battle happened in Boston. Now, the King of England sends over 30,000 troops. 10,000 are Hessians, hired hitmen to just wipe out George Washington's army of 7,000, 6,500 people from 14 to 60, without shoes, without clothes, without food, enough gunpowder for one or two bullets. Crazy, right? Strongest army in the world comes over, is going to stamp them out, and they do. Staten Island, Long Island, Rhode Island, Lower Manhattan, Upper Manhattan, New Jersey, Fort Lee. All the British and the Hessians just wipe out George Washington's ragtag army, Right? Done. They're the underdogs and they're getting stomped on by the privileged. Right? But I'm not talking about the other things in the book about George Washington always being told he couldn't, always underestimated, had no resources, so he had to be resourceful. All these things, underdogs, learned to stack up in their favor rather than against them. But think about this, and they get their butt kicked. And now they're down to 4,000 people. They're over in New Jersey, and George Washington has to convince 3,800, 4,000 troops who are beat up, tired, don't have the right clothes, didn't eat, don't have gunpowder. Some of them don't, literally don't have shoes. They got rags wrapped around their shoes, around their feet. He has to convince them to cross the Delaware on one of the coldest nights, Christmas Eve night, coldest nights of the year with ice in the Delaware, on little ragtag boats, minimal gunpowder, tired, hungry, cross over this and then go attack the Hessians. 10,000 men who just kicked their butts, and he's got to convince them to go across and fight them on Christmas. Most people would say no, but what underdogs have to do is. He was desperate. They got their butts handed to him. There was no way. If they didn't do it now, it was never the Hessians would have got up the next day, got strong, celebrated Christmas and come and wiped him out. So at that moment, in the middle of the night, he had to persuade these troops to get on boats and go attack one of the strongest. And these Hessians, they'd rather bayonet you in the face than take you as a prisoner, like ruthless. But what does he do? He turns desperation into persuasion. He leads from his heart. He leads authentically. He leads with power, with confidence, and convinces them to cross the Delaware and his ragtag army of several thousand compared to 10,000 of the best of the best. George Washington's army takes them in less than 45 minutes. That was the famous time that George Washington, wherever you are in the world, you probably know this. He wrote liberty or death, like we're winning or we're dying. That desperation fueled him. So if you are desperate for another level of life, you're desperate to get the business started, you're desperate to raise the money to fund it, you're desperate to get your marketing going, you're desperate for more Congratulations. That is the fuel for the next level of success that you crave, you desire and you want. So many people think, if I wasn't. If you weren't desperate, you wouldn't have the desire, you wouldn't have the passion. Do you know I still tap into my underdog disadvantages when I share. Sometimes I get too excited. Sometimes people watch my ads and they're like, oh, that guy's a hype guy. I'm not a hype guy. I'm just so enthusiastic. I was desperate as a kid to get away from pain, get away from being broke, get away from struggle, get away from never having control in my life. And that is turned into someone who loves to persuade people to action. Because I know if I get you to read my book to and read these chapters, or you read Millionaire Success Habits or you're a part of the knowledge broker blueprint course, if you're a part of these things, I get to change your life. So I'm desperate to persuade you to action. Does that make sense? So I'd love for you today to acknowledge, what parts of your life are you desperate to get away from and what parts of your life are you desperate to go towards? Do you wanna get away from a career that's not fulfilling you? Away from an income that doesn't match what you deserve? Away from a business that's not making the money you want? Are you desperate to get away. Feel that desperation? Are you desperate to get out of the mundane. Get out of the day to day and you're desperate to go to the next level, desperate to buy a bigger house, desperate to take care of your family, desperate to put money away for your kids. Feel that desperation. Because transmutated the right way, which I talk about in chapter seven, you could take that desperation and turn it into authentication, enthusiastic persuasion. Now, when you learn persuasion on that level, make sure what it is you're persuading people to do changes their life in a positive way. It impacts them in a huge, huge, huge, huge, huge way. Because that level of desperation turned the right way gets 3,000 men to cross a frozen river in the middle of the night to fight 10,000 of the strongest army in the entire world. That's desperation into persuasion. That's just a fraction of what I share in my book and I'm so excited. If you're listening to this audio or video when it first comes out, that means I'm only like eight days away from this book being launched to the entire world. But it doesn't matter.
