20 Dec 2019 · 10 min
Dean Graziosi says personal growth is a daily habit, not a one-time thing. He cites David Goggins' claim that people use only 40% of their capacity, and argues he only hires people committed to continuous learning through books, audiobooks, and masterminds.

We as humans, we go around the world giving 40% of what we have. There's a whole nother 60% in the storage tank that most people don't use, and we can access it. Welcome to the Dean Graziosi show. All success starts right here. Today, the lesson is working on your personal growth. If you're here watching this, and if you're my children, Bree, Brody, you know that personal growth has been my life, and I've probably tried to force it down your throat since you were way too young. Bree, you always will point out and always said, dad, not another lesson. But I'm so excited about it because it was something I didn't know about. You guys grew up around it. If you're watching this video right now, you're probably into personal growth and gaining capabilities to go faster. But I wasn't surrounded by it as a kid. I didn't even know it existed. I just thought the only way to learn was from your parents, peers, people around you in school. I didn't realize that there was this whole new world to stretch your mind, stretch your abundance, stretch your happiness, to open, overcome obstacles, to gain confidence, to find happiness, find joy. It's like, oh, my God, I didn't know it existed. So of course I'm ecstatic to anchor this into your life. You see so many people look at personal growth different than all areas of life. So if you want to be in good shape, I work out five, six, seven days a week now. Let me just ask you something. I work out five, six, seven days a week to stay in pretty good shape, right? Brody, I know you said I was super strong about five years ago, but now I'm kind of strong, so thank you for that. But anyway, depending on when you watch this, you'll remember that, hopefully. But if I ever worked out for one week like a madman, like, just picture this, guys. Picture. I go into the gym, I work out like crazy, like, get pumped up and feel good. But what if I didn't work out for an entire year after that? Would I stay in good shape? Would I still be strong? Would I still be able to beat you in a running race? Most likely not. People know for an absolute fact, if you eat good for a weekend and work out for a weekend, you're not going to be in great shape for the rest of your life. But when it comes to our personal growth, our ongoing education and gaining specialized knowledge to go faster and quicker to that next level of life that you want, people feel like you can read one book or go to One weekend event or go nuts and watch a bunch of videos in a two hour time frame and then you're good. No, we need to work on our personal growth, on our success, on expanding our specialized knowledge, on learning and growing. We need to work on that just as much, if not more. So I want to encourage you to make personal growth a part of your life. And when I say personal growth, what does that mean? It just means to me that you're learning from other people who've already been where you want to go. If you guys remember. Again, I'm not sure when you're watching this, but I listened to a 42 hour book on George Washington, the founder of our country, and it changed my life. I mean deep, every book I read, if I love it or listen to, changes my Life. But that 42 hour book was personal growth to me. I watched a man who was the consummate underdog. It was such a great foundation for the book I'm currently finishing up right now called the Underdog Advantage. As a guy that's been an underdog his whole life, like from not going to school when all his brothers did, but his dad ran out of money. Then his father passed away, there was no money left for him to go to school. Seemed like an underdog, but that's when he turned to self education. Specialized knowledge, went deep on knowledge and he gained an unfair advantage. The British army, since he wasn't born in England, looked down on him. They paid him half the money. They treated him like crap. That was an underdog. He didn't get the privileges, he got the worst jobs. But it also built a fire in him where he was like, screw you, I'm going to show you who I am. And just ongoing until finally he's in the, you know, he's running an army of revolutionaries from 15 years old to 60 years old. Half of them don't even have shoes. They don't have coats, they don't have food. He's got 7,500 troops. The king of England says, okay, these uppity Americans, go squash them. Sends 35,000 troops to America, to New York. Washington's got 7,500, the strongest army in the world sends 25,000 of their own troops and hires 10,000 Hessians, which were freedom fighters. They were just fighters for a living. They were ruthless. They'd rather bayonet you in the face than take you as a prisoner. I mean ruthless. He sends them to America, to New York, to just squash out Washington. After the Boston Tea Party, just a Massive underdog. And guess what happens? He loses. He loses Long island, he loses New York, he loses Brooklyn, he loses Fort Lee, New Jersey. He loses northern Manhattan. They lose everything. They get their butts kicked and they push him. Washington's army's running across New Jersey. They went from 7,500 down to 4,500. So many people died. Other ones just left and abandoned the army because the British government said. British army said, hey, come to us. We'll give you some money. We'll forgive you. You can work with us. So a lot of them were abandoning Washington. I mean, talk about an underdog. If you don't know the end result. You think he loses, Right? So why am I telling you this? That book captured me. And I wasn't just being a history buff. I was looking through the eyes of my own personal growth. When I want to give up, I think of Washington now. I do. I'm reading a book right now by David Goggins. You can't hurt me. That guy's just a monster. Like, that's not. He's not even human. But he's saying, we as humans, we go around the world giving 40% of what we have. There's a whole nother 60% in the storage tank that most people don't use, and we can access it. When I'm running and I want to give up, I think of that. I think of George Washington. When I'm in a trying to, you know, change the world, make self education the new norm. With Tony Robbins, I'm thinking of that. And it's hard. And we're spending the money and the time and everybody says it's crazy. I think of George Washington. That's my personal growth. So what I'm going to share with you guys today is I don't want to hire anybody anymore. As I'm recording this the last four years. I don't hire anyone who's not into personal growth, that's not working on gaining specialized knowledge, who's reading books, who's watching courses, who's watching videos like this one and the ones I've suggested to you guys for years. If they're not working on themselves growing, then I don't want them a part of my company. And that's where we're heading. Guys, think about this. The old school model is you go to school for four, six, maybe eight years, you gain that knowledge, and then you don't do any more education. And you're going to expect that you're going to play at the highest level possible. That's like going to the gym for a year of your life and expecting to be in shape for the rest of your life. I'm going to encourage you, Bree, Brody, my children, grandchildren, depending on when you watch this, work on your personal growth every day. Listen to a book on the way to your office. Listen to a book on the way to the gym. Listen to a book at the gym. Watch videos. Even if it's five minutes a day, 10 minutes a day, we need to. We need to know that when we struggle, someone's already been there and we can find that answer. When we want to go to another level, we have an opportunity. Someone's been there. Get in workshops, get in masterminds, get in communities. Start a workshop, start a mastermind. When you teach, you go to another level. But personal growth isn't something that you dabble with. Personal growth is a way of life and what religion or spirituality you're attracted to the most at this phase of your life, go deeper on that. Have a bigger purpose in you. Look, find, find the answers through other people's experience. And again, it could be in the weirdest ways. I read books on prisoners of war and how they survived being a prisoner of war and how their. What their thoughts were like and how they shut out the. The bad voice and they found a new voice and they found gratitude. I mean, I remember going through some really stressful times, and I was just lacking gratitude. I mean, as simple as waking up in the morning and saying, thank you, God, thank you, universe for these three things and letting me feel it. Something as simple as that transformed my life. But I never wouldn't have got it. I never would have gotten those answers if I wasn't obsessed with my personal growth. And again, I don't hire anybody. And the reason Lisa and I have such an amazing relationship is because we both work on. We both want to grow. We both share books, ideas, questions, and videos. So this lesson was really simple today. But maybe not so simple if you're not feeling perfect in your life right now. If you're looking for answers to. If you're confused, great. That means you're pushing yourself. But there's a lot of people out there with the answers who have already experienced it. It might not be exactly like yours, but gain enough of it and it becomes cumulative and you start piecing all these different parts together to where you can find another level of you. You can, as David Goggins say, you can tap into that 60% that most people ignore. I promise you can get through anything. You're going through. Whether it's a challenge, you can do it. If you have an opportunity that seems big, go after it and get some advice through personal growth. All right, that's my message for today.
