If Selling Makes You Feel Sleazy, You're Doing It Wrong
16 Mar 2019 · 10 min
Dean Graziosi argues that selling feels sleazy only when it's unethical. He reframes it as the oxygen for business and personal growth, using stories about movies and restaurants to show that sharing what you love is selling. The key: passion, enthusiasm, and authenticity.

I want to know if you think selling is evil. Is sales evil? Do sales scare you? With all the opportunities that exist today, why haven't you reached your next level of income, life, and wealth? In most cases, we've been lied to. We've been told that if you find the right opportunity and you work hard, you can be successful. And that's simply not true. Millionaires, billionaires, and successful people have realized you need the foundation for wealth, the habits. And that's exactly what you'll be learning on the Millionaire Success Habits podcast. All success starts here. There's a lot of times we think selling is bad or selling is evil because someone sold us a bag of goods at one point in our life. Maybe someone sold our parents in a harsh way, or a slick salesperson pushed us into something that wasn't good. Or maybe they sold you something that wasn't ethical. I get it. That can make you feel bad about sales. I like all the nos. We got some yeses. Karen said yes. Sometimes I think it is to. I totally understand Karen. But if you think back, if you think selling is evil, it's probably because of a bad experience you had, right? Or maybe you got somebody. I'm not saying you, Karen, but someone may have gotten sold into a bad relationship, right? But I want you to think about something. If. Let's just take, for instance, that what is being sold is not only ethical, but it also can help prove the quality of someone's life, whether that's a program that stops smoking or a car that can get you there faster, or a vacation home that would be great for your family or. Or a book or anything, right? An iPhone, an iPad, anything, right? So let's just take that. Let's just assume that the product is ethical and it's good. Let me put that on hold for a minute. When you're selling, are you the worst version of yourself or the best version of yourself? You know, I love when someone says to me, I don't sell. I don't like to sell. I don't know how to sell. But it's the same person 15 minutes before was telling me about their favorite movie, and this is what they were like, oh, my God, Dean. I went to this movie. It is so good. About 15 minutes in, it was a little slow at first. Fifteen minutes in, it gets so serious, and it gets so funny. I laughed so hard, I almost fell on the ground. You got to go see it. And a minute later, I talk about sales, and they go, oh, no, I'm not good at sales. It's like, really, I'm going to a movie tonight because of you. So you go to a restaurant that you love to death when you see your buddy or your friend and you say, oh my God, you have to go this restaurant. The spaghetti, meatballs, oh my God. The pasta was al dente. They cooked it perfect. And the spaghetti sauce, it didn't have too much garlic in it. It wasn't too chunky. It was kind of like the smooth sauce. And the meatballs, let me tell you something about these meatballs. When you hit the fork on these meatballs, it just popped open. It wasn't hard. There wasn't too many bread crumbs. Oh, my God, it was so good. Now with a glass of Chianti, it was incredible. My mouth's watering. But I've had people sell me on a place like that and then 10 minutes later when I tell them how good at sales they are, they go, no, no, I don't like sales. Sales aren't good. So let me just share something with you. When you sell, when you share with somebody about a great book, when you share with somebody about a great restaurant, when you share with somebody about what you're passionate about, about being a parent. If you like this. Thank you. Thumbs up. Hit the share button right now. If you like this, it's going to get better. If you like that, when you're sharing about your children or about what you're passionate about, if you have your own business or about what you do for a living, or about your girlfriend or your husband, your wife, or your. Or you're sharing about a movie or a restaurant, do you think you're your best self or your worst self? When I'm like, oh my God, I love being a dad more than anything on the planet, this is true. I'm not just doing some pitch. I love being a dad. If there's anything in the world I could, like, take everything away but being a dad, oh my God. I'm going to leave here now and go practice with my daughter in softball. I got her tryouts tomorrow morning. My son's got a game at 4 o' clock for flag football. There's no better feeling in the entire world. Anybody who doesn't have a child yet and you're thinking about it, do it. It's the greatest gift the entire world. Yes. I could sell you all day on being a parent. Why? Because I love it. So let me ask you something. What version am I? Am I excited? Am I enthusiastic? Am I passionate? Do I feel alive? Are My eyes popping? Are my hands moving? Yes. And I'm selling, but I'm a best version of myself when I'm selling. As long as what you're selling is ethical and can change someone's life, you want to be selling all the time of the things that you want to make an impact on people's lives. So why am I going on into this today? Because I know so many people want to start a business and they want to. Let's say you want to be a consultant and they're the best at what they do. Let's say you're a natural healer or you're a massage therapist. I'm just making this up. And you're the best massage therapist in the world. What we are delusioned to believe is that if we are great at something, they will come. We try to think of like a field of dreams. If we build it, they will come. I'm the greatest at it. They will come. I wrote the greatest book, they'll just buy it. I built the greatest course, they'll just come get it. I have the best food, they'll come to my restaurant. And the fact is, I'd love that to be true. But I want to be honest with you. If you're not selling, you're dying. If you're not climbing, you're sliding. Sales is the oxygen for your business. So if you want to run your own business, if you want to be a consultant, you want to be in real estate, you want to take your life to the next level, you want to get a promotion at your job. You have to learn the art of persuasion and be selling yourself. And selling is not bad. If you get the word evil out of your head and realize you're the best version of yourself when you sell. If you have. If you are the best massage therapist, then become the best salesman in the world. On why people should use you because they're not just going to come find you. So today I wanted to talk about three things to make to start that business or to scale the business you have or to start that side income or get a real estate deal done. How do you do that? You do that by learning how to market and sell. You can call it attraction and persuasion. You can talk, you can tell it storytelling. I told a lot of stories today. I told a story about my children, told a story about a food. But while I'm doing that, I was persuading you guys to think about that pasta or think about being a parent or when I talk about my book, I talk about my book, with Passion. We've sold over 100,000 copies already, and people are going nuts over that book. It's changing people's lives all over the world. Do you think I feel guilty on selling my book? Absolutely not. In fact, if I don't sell my book to people, if you didn't get my book, I'm doing you a disservice because then I'm not getting the habits and the rules and the strategies in your hand that could actually make an impact on your life. So when I look at selling, if I was selling, maybe gambling, if I was selling cigarettes, if I was selling something that could hurt you, then maybe I'd have to figure out how to be sleazy or, I don't know, something. And I don't want to dog anybody who does that. That was rude of me. But when I'm talking about something that will change your life, I'll get passionate. I'll get enthusiastic. I'll use my hands. So this isn't about me. It's not about me selling my book. I sell a lot of stuff. But I know if you say yes, if you give me your credit card, I get to change your life. I want you to start thinking about that in your life. What can you sell your way into? The next level? Can you sell your way into. And when I say sell, I don't mean we automatically think of cheesy salesmen. I don't. I think of ethically. Ethically persuading from passion, from enthusiasm, and from authenticity. Remember those three words. That's the secret to selling. Passion, enthusiasm, and authenticity. Those three things. No one will outsell you. So if you want to sell your kids on taking a different path, if you want to sell your kids on a bigger future, if you want to sell your spouse on a different way, be enthusiastic. Be authentic. Be passionate. You want to get your business finally working. Be authentic. Be enthusiastic, be passionate. Selling is the lifeline of your next level. If you can create the best book, best course, best product, best pizza restaurant in the world, if you don't sell, it won't thrive. So that's what I want you to think about this weekend. Is selling evil? Absolutely not. Could it be? Of course. So I want you to think about this weekend. The reason I went live now, and I know most of you are going to be watching this replay when you get home. Please, if you like this right now, hit the share button. This is a different one that I've shared in a long time, but if you like it, hit share. Right now, let's get this out to everybody so when they get home from work, it's waiting there for them, okay? I want you to think about what's up, John Trebet. What's up, Liberio? Good to see you guys. This is real talk. It is real talk. Look, and I'm just sitting here having a nice little time here. You know, it's supposed to get cold here tomorrow. Cold, it's going to get the 50. It's 75 and sunny. So I'm sorry to anybody who's not in the great weather, but we suffer here in the summer. I digress. But I want you to think about this weekend. If you persuaded better, if you had authenticity, more passion, more. More enthusiasm about whatever it is you want in your life, that thing that you strive for, that next level that you want, whether it's income, new business, better relationship, better friends, more happiness, more joy. If you had more, if you were selling yourself and selling others on a regular basis, could you make more money? Could your business thrive more? Could you start that side income? The answer is yes. You think Apple is good sales? They're the best salespeople on the planet. You think Amazon is good at selling? Of course. That's why everybody uses them every day. All those people have learned it. Even if it doesn't seem like selling, it is so. If you look at Mother Teresa, was she a good saleswoman? Was Martin Luther King a good salesman? If they weren't good salespeople, you wouldn't have known them, you never would have met them, you never would have heard them. Was George Washington a good salesman? Benjamin Franklin? Absolutely. Their enthusiasm, their passion, all those pieces allowed them to get the momentum to deliver something good. Want to take your life to the next level? Be more persuasive, be more enthusiastic, be more passionate, and do it with love. And that's my message for today.
