My Kids Take Over! - Dean Graziosi Weekly Wisdom
28 Jul 2016 · 5 min
Short Weekly Wisdom episode where Dean Graziosi interviews his children Brianna and Brody about goals they set in family meetings. They discuss specific, recent goals in baseball (pitching, hitting, double-headers, strikeouts), friendship (reconnecting with teammate Andrew), and new goals (ballet, languages, guitar, flag football). Dean emphasizes two main lessons: regularly set and write down goals (which helped his kids achieve them) and do not give others permission to rob your happiness or state of mind. Episode ends with a brief promo for Dean's free books.

Hey, everybody. Dean Graziosi, welcome to the Weekly Wisdom. I'm here with my children, Brianna and Brody. Can you guys say hi? Hi. So they came to work with me today. I figured, why not do a video together? So what was our. We have family meetings on Sundays. What was the topic of our meeting yesterday?
Setting our goals.
Setting our goals. Right. They're pretty cool, aren't they? Why do you like setting goals, Brody?
Because then they come true.
Because they come true. Hey, I think that's enough. You got enough wisdom for today? No. So we went over yesterday, we looked back a couple months ago, and. And both of you guys set goals in different areas of your life, but we set them in baseball because both of you are so good at baseball. Brody, do you remember some of the goals that you set a couple two months ago? What was one of them?
To be a pitcher.
To be a pitcher. And what have you been doing since then? Pitching and practicing. Do you remember what your other one week goal was back then? It was to play a double header. Play a double header and get all the hits. How did that work out? How'd that goal go?
I did a double header and I hit every ball you did.
You went nine for nine in both double headers. Do you remember your other goal about Andrew?
Mm.
What was it?
To be friends. Better friends. With him.
To be better friends with Andrew. So Andrew's a kid on his team, and it seemed like they separated a little, and Brody was a little sad, so we set a goal to be better friends. So what ended up happening?
They were better friends.
Yeah. They had a play date, they went to the batting cage together, and now they're really good buds, and it made them really happy. So why is it cool to set goals?
Because then they come true.
Because then they come true. I told them about that Harvard study, and I'd love to know share with you the exact details, but they followed people that graduated Harvard. You can tell how technical I am. They followed a group of individuals through Harvard, and then they followed them 50 years later. And the most successful people only had one thing in common. What was that?
They set goals.
They set goals. That was the most common thing they did. The people who set goals made more money, had happier lives, better relationships. So, Bria, what about you? Why do you think goals are important?
Because they challenge you to work harder. So they come true.
Love it. What were some of your goals? Do you remember your goals from a few months ago? Mm. What was one of them?
To become a pitcher.
To become a pitcher. And then what did you do after you set that goal?
I pitched.
You sure did. But what did you do before that first game? What did we do almost every night?
Practice. Pitching.
She did. She practiced for about three weeks and then told the coach, I think I'm ready. And we put you in that one game. And she did great. What was your second goal?
To strike out five batters.
When did that happen?
Like a week after.
A week after she played a game and struck out seven batters, which was awesome. And then what was your last goal?
To get on a better team.
And what did we register for you last week?
A better team?
Yeah, more of a travel team, a competitive team. So what are some new goals we set yesterday for the future?
To do ballet.
To do ballet. What else.
To keep doing? Softball.
Keep doing softball. And what was that third one I think is pretty cool.
To speak two languages.
That's pretty awesome. You're gonna be better than dad since I speak one. What about you, Brody? What's some goals that you put?
Play guitar.
Play guitar. Cool. We're starting guitar lesson.
Play flag football.
Play flag football.
And play baseball.
And play baseball. Pretty cool stuff. Guys, thanks so much for having spending time with me here with my two kiddos. You know how many of us go through life wanting more, but we never take the time to actually write it down? The greatest gift I could give these two. There's lots of things I try to teach them not to stress about what other people say. Right. If someone calls you a name, should that hurt you? No. How come?
Because it's probably not true most of the time.
Absolutely. And I teach both of them that no one has the right to rob their happiness. So if you look at some of the simple things that can help us in life, setting goals. Most people don't. They know what they don't want in life. They don't want the. They don't want the bad relationship they don't want to have, lack of money. But they never set the goals of what they really do want. And I love the fact that I've shared with these kiddos how to set goals. They set goals, and they all came true. And now they set a whole new one. I'm like, how can they not come true? Secondly, I teach them that what other people say. You can't give people permission to rob your happiness, rob your state of mind. And that's not easy. You know, being in. Going into second grade and fourth grade. I can't believe it. Second and fourth graders, you know, there's bullies, there's people who will say things and try to hurt you. And I don't want them to give someone else permission to rob their beautiful states. And so today, if you could take any lesson from my kiddos, from these cute little munchkins. You gonna smile? Show them your teeth? Well, lack of teeth. He lost both his teeth a couple weeks ago. Two lessons today. Set some goals. They did. They came true. And they set some more. And don't let anybody rob your happiness. No one has that. Don't give anybody that permission. If there's someone in your life that makes you feel bad, put a wall up, get rid of them, or change the circumstances. Guys, thanks so much for watching. You guys want to say goodbye?
