How could when this ends, you be at another level, not behind everybody else? And I think this is one of those times in history. We can't control the outside world, but we can control what we do on the inside of our soul. We can control our thoughts, and we can. We can control what we do. Welcome to the Dean Graziosi show. All success starts right here. All right, let's talk self discipline.
Okay.
You know, in these crazy times, so many of us are home like we are right now. We have fear on our mind. We have worry on our mind. But then we think about, can we get a. Get a leg up? Can we have an advantage? Is there opportunity in this crazy time? How do you become a leader? How do you become a role model? How could when this ends, you be at another level, not behind everybody else? And I think this is one of those times in history. We can't control the outside world, but we can control what we do on the inside of our soul. We can control our thoughts, and we can. We can control what we do. But none of that happens without self discipline. So when I say the word self discipline, what's that mean to you? Hey, everybody. Dean Graziosi here. My beautiful wife, Lisa. We're only. If you're watching video, you can see we are only days away from having our little boy, Luca, in this crazy world, we have this blessing coming.
We'll never forget his birthday.
Yeah. Absolutely. Never. But today, we want to talk about self discipline, because even we're here, we're home, and we're trying to get a lot done. And you can see how you get distracted and not pay attention. And we got some things that are really important today. But I'd love your thoughts on self discipline.
So for me, self discipline is something that's a little bit painful to achieve. Awesome results. So self discipline. Like, I know that I have to get some certain things done and that I want to get things done, but self discipline is something that I have to tell. You know, I guess there are rules for myself to achieve that, because they won't happen on their own.
Yeah. Well, and here's.
Nobody will do it for me.
Yeah. And here's the other thing about self discipline, too. Right? Is like, I hate the word discipline. I hate the word. Like, it feels like rules. Like, you have to be disciplined to get this done. And I think you can make it a lot lighter. At least I did. And that's what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about the tactical side. And you need that, right? Like, put in your journal, what you're going to do, how are you going to get it done? Right? And we'll talk about the tactical side and then there's a strategic side. And then besides that, though, none of that works without the one thing that I'm going to share with you today. So on a tactical slash strategic side, you should make a daily list of what you need to get done that day especially. Okay? So let's just be transparent. This is a crazy time in the world. So many of us are home. If you're listening to this right now, you might be working from home or maybe you're not working at all. Maybe there's no income coming in and it's scary. Or you're not knowing if you should shut your business down right now. Or maybe you did. So we have that. So let's just park that for a minute because we have an opportunity here and that's one of the things I want to share. And we also have the ability to fall way behind. So let's talk about the tactical strategic side. What are some of the things you do? Journal. I know I'm asking you. Like, I don't know, but I'm like, this is for everybody else too.
I do. I write notes. I write myself. Things to do on my cell phone, on my journal and post its. We have post its everywhere.
Yeah.
Things we have to get done.
So one thing on the tactical strategical strategy side is writing down what you want to accomplish that day. Right. So many times, especially now that you're home. Like, wake up, write down what you want to do that day and don't write a hundred things. Write three that are musts and then put bonus ones after that and make sure you get it done right. Secondly is if you're working from home, find a spot in your house that's comfortable. Like, it doesn't matter if you live in a 300 square foot apartment like I used to, or we're blessed to live in a bigger house now, find a spot that's yours. I don't care if it's a corner. Like if you were. Yeah, I mean, I know how you set up your little working space, but if you need to put a little plant there, if you want water and tea and a green drink if you like. Music playing in the background if you like.
Or your essential oils.
Yeah, right, exactly. Or you got a little. What's the thing you have? A diffuser?
Is that diffuser.
A diffuser that's pumping out like really good smells all the time. It is Worth that, because that helps you get into flu state. So figure out the things. Time. It. Set a time if you have your children at home or. Or you're, you know, you got a spouse or a husband, a wife, a friend at home. Maybe you say, okay, from 10 to 2, and then from 3 to 5, I just can't be bothered because you wouldn't be home anyway. I know that when my kids are here, I feel guilty. And you just said the other day, it's like, babe, they'd be at school. Like, you'd be at work, Right? So remember that and set time. Here's what I'm going to encourage you to do on this side is do whatever it takes to help yourself get into flow state where, you know, like, oh, I'm achieving. I'm leaning into what I want to do. Like, here's the thing, maybe you already have a business. This is the time to work on it. Maybe it's time for you to start your own business. This is the time to work on it. Maybe you want to enter the information age. That's why Tony and I share KBB with the world. It's like, how do you get into the digital economy in the knowledge industry? That's. I mean, that's a business that's going to thrive during this time. Whatever it is you're going to do, you need to set the time, set your goals, and find a place where you feel comfortable. Any questions on that? Any thoughts?
Nope.
Okay.
I love what you're saying.
Yeah. Okay, good. You know what? I got yelled at a couple times because I get so excited. I cut you off, and everybody's like, don't cut Lisa off. So, baby, I'll never do that again. But this is the part I really want to talk about today.
This is your show.
No, it's ours, baby. It's ours today. It's ours. Okay. Okay. But here's what I want to talk to you about. None of that means crap without the one thing I want to share. Now, I don't care if you have the greatest list. You set your goals. You find the perfect place in your house. You put the perfect music on. It smells perfect. Without this one thing, discipline will seem difficult, and you'll veer off and you'll binge out on Netflix and go, damn, I missed another day. Or you'll watch CNN or MSNBC or Fox News, whatever it is that you watch, or you'll stop on Instagram for a minute, and all of a sudden, three hours will go by. This is how you Kill that. You ready for this? This is the teachable moment, is I want you all to fast forward 90 days or even 180 days. I don't know if this is going to last three weeks, three months, or six months. Right? But here's the thing that this is what I do to myself. This is what I do for me, and this is what keeps me moving forward. I was just doing it right now. I was looking through stuff like, no way it's going to happen to me. Imagine if this lasts three months and you're gonna go through the hell of it anyway. Maybe not enough income for three months. Maybe you don't get to see your family. We're having a baby any day now and our doctor just said no one should come to the house for at least a couple weeks. Like, she has the closest family I've ever seen in my entire life. They love each other, they text a hundred times a day, and she's got to tell her family they can't see their firstborn grandson. Right? That's brutal. Like, you're gonna deal with all this crap. You're gonna deal with all this crap anyway. Could you imagine coming out of this in three or six months and you didn't move the needle in your life? Imagine thinking like, this is a time where we can't control the outside world. It is forcing us to stay home. So while you're home, isn't this the time where you could take advantage and finally finish that course or buy the course that you've been talking about, or take the online virtual training or finish the thing you're doing, or launch your knowledge industry, or launch. Launch the online digital space business you're going to do, or fix your relationship with your spouse or connect with your children, or read those damn books or start eating better or start exercising or do fricking yoga. You've been talking about this shit for so long, and all of a sudden something comes along out of your control and it forces you home. And I see people binging out all day. I got friends sending me texts every 10 minutes that the world's coming to an end. I won't even look. I'm not watching the news. You know why? Because this has given me a time. I've been busier than shit. So together we have in the last year. This is a time I want to grow as a person. This is a time I want to feel what the world needs. I want to be innovative. I want to finish courses. I'm going to read books obsessively you have a choice to look back in six months from now and go, that was a shitty situation. But while it was shitty, I launched my business. I got in the knowledge industry or whatever industry you want to go in. I read these 7, 10, 12 books, I finished the three courses, I started yoga, I feel better. Or, or you can look back in three or six months and go, wow, I just had that all that time and all I did was binge out on news. All I did was text people stupid jokes or fear of what's going on. I didn't read the course, I didn't take action, I didn't register the URL, I didn't learn marketing, I didn't read the books. And you will freaking look at that and say, if I can't do it then, then what? And here's the thing, those that take this time to do that, to self educate, will be the ones that come out on the other side. And those that don't will self select to be out of the game. Listen, I want to be really honest with you right now. We are going to see massive unemployment like you haven't seen in a long time. We are going to see a decline in the real estate market, a decline in the stock market. We are going to see. Listen, I'm only talking through history. I've been through three down markets, right? I've been in business for 30 years. This is not going away in five minutes. This is either a really bad dip or a recession. Heck, it could be a depression. We don't know how bad this is going to go. So you have to realize you can't control that, but you can surely control what goes on in your mind. You can surely control if you want to be a role model or if you want to be the person who's the complete opposite of that, the person everybody feels bad for, the person that didn't step up, you get that choice. So when people say self discipline, self discipline doesn't work unless you can really decide emotionally, who do you want to be in 90 days from today? Who do you want to be in 180 days from right now? You want to be the person that just wasted that time focusing on the wrong things or the person that armed up, the person that got fierce, the person that gained capabilities, the person ready to come out of this the gate like a horse coming out of the track. You'll come out first, where everybody's gonna be standing around going, oh yeah, now that we're back, what do I do? Screw that. That's what I'm talking about that's self discipline. What do you think?
I love it. Especially because I think to myself, everybody's saying what Dean's saying right now. Like, you know, make this time a productive time. But what if you did not? So at the end of all this, you, you know, like, if you did not, you have a whole mess of, you know, worries, procrastination to clean up.
Yeah.
You just gained 10 pounds in this, you know, quarantine. And I have to lose the weight.
Or get your bills stacked up and you. And you have no other option.
Exactly. So, like, I always think of it like that. Like I rather do the dirty work now. And, and also when we get out of this, you know, be at a. At a better level than I would be if I would just sit on my butt and do nothing.
Yeah. I mean, even having this conversation right now, right now, having this conversation, I'm like, I'm going to work even harder. Like, as you think about it, it's.
Like, I need to work harder, deeper, stronger. We all have room for improvement.
Yeah. And listen, guys, if you're watching or listening right now, seriously, don't just take this lightly. This is our lives. This is a scary time. From our family to yours. We're sending you love, support. We're sending you well wishes. I know some of you are in really tough times right this moment that you didn't even know was coming three weeks ago. And we're sending you our love and prayers. And some of you are sitting wondering what to do. Make this a call to action. Listen, just like the book who Moved My Cheese, Right? You could sit around and say, I want my cheese back or you can go find new freaking cheese. This is a time to find new freaking cheese. Because most of the world is going to sit on their ass waiting for someone to fix it. Screw that. Let's be role models. Let's be leaders, and let's do the best we can. And I can say that from someone who's been broke more than once, who's lost everything more than once, I know what that feels like. But I also know what it feels like to focus on the right things and change the world. We appreciate you guys so much. If you're listening or watching, go make sure you check out deansbook.com. it's a great book for today's world. It's called the Underdog Advantage. It's my brand new book and we're all underdogs right now. We did something special. We bought several thousand of them. They're in the warehouse. We're giving them away for free if you cover the shipping and handling. I just think it's a great time for a book like that. It's a great time to really read it and resonate with it. You have the time, and that's my suggestion. But other than that, we're wishing you the best, and we'll be here as much as we possibly can to share the support, self discipline, do the tactical, do the strategic. But go upstream and realize if you don't do it now, then win. All right, see you guys. If you liked this podcast, make sure you rate it and also make sure to click subscribe so you never miss out.
