Dean Graziosi explains why comparing yourself to others kills progress. Instead, measure against your past self, treat others' wins as proof of concept, and replace envy with curiosity about how they did it.

Can comparison be the thing that is silently holding you back from that 2.0 version of you that you create? Welcome to the Dean Graziosi Show. All success starts right here. Welcome to the Dean Graziosi Show. Yes, it's Dean. I'm so excited to have you here. Listen, I know there's a million other things you could be listening to, watching. You're taking time with me. I do not take that lightly. And I'm here to serve. And this is the podcast where we go upstream and anchor in the foundation for success, the rules for success. You know, you see all these magical ways to get money, get wealthy, get rich overnight. How's that working for the world? In most cases, it's not. If you're here, you're someone that knows. You got to put the work in. You have to change the habits. You got to build the foundation, and then you can create sustainable wealth, abundance, joy, and success in your life. And today I want to talk about one of those crippling things that you might not be recognizing, and that's comparison. Now, you've probably heard it in a million podcasts and IG so stories. It's everywhere. Don't compare yourself to others. But I'm going to ask you today to really listen to me, to really understand how crippling this is. Because in today's world, that we have access to everyone, I believe it's magical. I believe it's amazing. And it also can be devastating. Let me tell you the amazing part. Listen, I've been in the self education industry, writing books, doing courses, helping others, infomercials online for. For over 22 years now. When I started 22 years ago, there was no access like there is today. There were no podcasts, there was no Instagram, there was no Facebook, There wasn't even MySpace. There was no YouTube. When you wanted to access or find people that could give you their treasures, their gifts, their strategies to go faster, quicker, bigger, you had to read books. Well, I had dyslexia, so I hated reading books. I was afraid to read books. And it was before audiobooks. Do you believe that? So the only way I gained information was watching infomercials or getting mentored by people in my town that were more successful, that seemed to have more happiness, joy and abundance in their life. And it transformed my life. So why say social media is so amazing? Because we have access. We have proof of concept that success is possible by such a wide variety of people from all over the world, all different shapes, all different sizes, all different backgrounds, all different income, all different everything. And they found success. And that could be our proof of concept, that is our meter to say, if they can do it, I can do it. I love that part about it. But the part that can be devastating to you is comparison. When you're trying to get ahead, but you're working the job to just pay the bills, or you've got this company and you're trying it, just not the marketing's not working and you're not making the money or are the bank accounts empty or life's okay, but you're in a job that doesn't allow you to spend the time with your children or your husband, your wife, or the time to work on you and get back into meditation or fixing your health. And you're just living in this quiet like, oh, crap, I know there's more, but how do I get there? Phase in your life. And then when you're trying, you go online and you go on Instagram and there's a 23 year old getting on a private jet and you're like, God damn it, I haven't even. I can't even pay for a Starbucks coffee. I have to go get the cheap coffee at the 7 11, right? And then you see someone else who's doing this and they got the big house and, and they're flying all over and they seem happy and they're fit and they're in love and you're like, damn it. That's the comparison that's crippling. So today I wanna give you three things that I think will shift that for life. Number one, I talk about this a lot, but again, think about it. Today you're here with me, you're listening to this. You could be listening to a million other things. Today I want you to compare yourself to who you were last week, who you were last month, who you were last year. The only person you have to compare yourself to is the you of yesterday. If we're growing every day, we have a culture of progress. And that's where life is about. Progress. If you hit lotto tomorrow, would you really be happy? Why do you think most people go broke? It's the progress that's actually the journey. So get to enjoy it. Get to be thrilled that you're growing just by listening to me right now. You're growing. You're taking the time to gather self education. You're not watching the Kardashians, I'm watching. Or tmz. I'm not being rude, I'm just being real. You're Gaining knowledge, you're moving forward. You're a better version right now than you were five minutes ago because you're gaining capabilities. When you start looking back at the person you used to be compared to the person you are now, you start realizing that you may have passed all the original goals you set for yourself. You just didn't give yourself a pat on the back. You didn't look at it and go, wow, look who I used to be. Look who I am now. That's where comparison can actually be great. It's just about you. Where comparison will kill you is where your looking into other people's lives. Where you're comparing yourself even to the ideal version of you. You might be in great shape. You're like, ah, but damn it, I'm not making enough money. Maybe you're making great money and you're in good shape. Like, damn it, my relationship sucks or I don't have one. We have this weird default in our brain to find the weakest part of us and beat ourselves up. Rather than saying, I'm evolving, I'm growing, I'm making a culture of progress. What does Kaizen say? How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you run a thousand mile race? One step at a time. As long as you're taking the steps, as long as you're taking the bites, you are moving forward. And if someone move faster, quicker, great. And if someone's behind you, great. That's their lives. What about yours? So here's another trick. When you see someone else getting ahead, when you see someone else living at the fullest potential, the first thing you should do is just use that as like I said before, proof of concept. It's great someone else made it. But you have to remember that you never know what they're going through behind the scenes. Listen, I'm in the best relationship of my entire life. I am so in love with my wife, it's ridiculous. I love her more every day. I'm so excited to be having as I'm doing this, we're having a baby in a couple months. I'm so excited. But it was only four or five years ago that I was in a horrible situation. I didn't know what to do with myself. I made mistakes. I hurt people in past relationships. I'm not too proud to admit that I made dumb decisions. I didn't focus on a relationship. But if you would have saw a picture of me five years ago at my nice house, you might have gone or driving in a car or flying On a private jet, you'd be like, man, that Dean's got it all. No, I didn't. I was sad on the inside. I was lonely on the inside. I knew things weren't right and I didn't know what to do because I was so afraid of what would happen with my children. But I had to go through that to be in a situation. Now, when you see me with my wife, I am the happiest any human could be. I'm more in love than anybody could be in love, but I had to go through hell. But how many people knew I was going through hell? Right? So that's the same thing. When you see somebody flying on the jet, that might be the last time they flew on it. Or maybe they're about to lose it to the bank, or their wife is leaving because they're jet setting all over and making dumb decisions. Or their husband doesn't have faith in him anymore. Like, there's so many things that you don't see behind the scenes. So when you envy other people or you compare other people, you have no idea what's going on in their life. So the three things are simply this. Compare yourself to the version of you last week, last month, last year. Create the culture of progress. Not comparison. Only comparing to who you used to be. When you see somebody succeeding, use it as proof of concept. Dig into their story. See where they came from, see where they're going. See how they did it. Learn from people who are actually playing the game, not pretending to play the game. And use that as empowerment to say, if they can do it, I can do it. But then instead of letting that envy or that comparison or your ego or jealousy come in, say, you know what? I'm gonna send that person a prayer. I'm gonna send him good energy. Cause who knows what's going on in other parts of their life? Maybe their relationship's falling apart. Maybe their health isn't good, maybe their employees hate them. You never know. But if you just send that love after taking the proof of concept, it changes everything. Social media is gonna be in our face for the rest of our lives. How you decide to use it, how you let comparison rule your life or empower your life is all up to you.
