What's Cool About You? - Millionaire Success Habits
2 Jul 2018 · 8 min
This podcast episode (Millionaire Success Habits) by Dean Graziosi teaches that confidence is a foundational habit for success and offers a concrete exercise—write a list of 10 "what's cool about you" items (accomplishments, strengths, problem-solving examples, unique abilities)—to boost and protect confidence when facing decisions. Dean illustrates the exercise with personal stories (dyslexia, childhood challenges, skills with cars and heavy equipment) and an example friend (Shawn Stevenson) to show how recalling strengths shifts physiology and decision-making. The episode ends with subscriber and resource calls-to-action.

So let me ask you this. What is cool about you? With all the opportunities that exist today, why haven't you reached your next level of income, life and wealth? In most cases, we've been lied to. We've been told that if you find the right opportunity and you work hard, you can be successful. And that's simply not true. Millionaires, billionaires and successful people have realized you need the foundation for wealth, the habits. And that's exactly what you'll be learning on the Millionaire Success Habits podcast. All success starts here. Alright, so what's cool about you? Yeah, that's the topic of this week's training. Because here's what I know. Here's what I know. If we want to be entrepreneurs, if we want to make more money, if we want to strive in business, want to thrive in life, there's one thing that you have to protect, probably over everything else, and that's your confidence. And it is so easy to get your confidence dinged. I will talk about this month after month after month and I'll give you different tools because one will stick with you. You know, you've heard, keep your confidence up, you've thought about it, maybe you've had days with confidence up and down. But I'm telling you, one of the main ingredients to success is high confidence. Have you ever made the sale when your confidence is low? Have you ever asked for the date when your confidence is low? Have you asked for the raise? Have you asked for the partnership? Have you attacked life? When your confidence is down, you're down. When your confidence is down, you play small. I think we all know that. So I'm going to give you different tools. I'll talk about confidence a lot, but I'll never try to repeat myself or I'll do my best not to. But how do I give you tools to keep your confidence at the highest level possible? And today I want you to do an exercise called what's cool about Me? What's cool about you? You see, so many times when our confidence is down or a new challenge arises or, or a time we have to be strong, our crazy brains start focusing on what we're not good at. Our brains focus on where we failed in the past, our brains focus on what could fail in the future. And all of a sudden thinking through what could go wrong. You think you're planning. No, you're actually shrinking your confidence and then you never execute on the plan. Am I right? Has that ever happened? Do you think about right now, a time in the past where you could have Went for it, you could have started the company, you could have went for the raise, you could have tried for that invention that you wanted to get on TV to SOL problems, but you're confident, you backed off. Then someone else had the invention, someone else made a gazillion bucks, someone else got the raise, someone else got the money, right? So how do we find ways to trick our brain? So here's a really tough question. If you were sitting here with me right now and I said, on a piece of paper, write down 10 things cool about you. I've done this with thousands of people. I watched so many people. I know the first time I did it, I watched people like, I don't know if there's anything cool about me now. There's so many things cool now. You could use a different word. You could say, what's some accomplishments that you've achieved? What's some problems you overcame? What are some unique abilities? I just like the simple thought, the simple process of what's cool about you. So let's do this right now. And if you're driving in your car, if you're working out at the gym, just listening to this, wherever it is, think about this. And maybe when you're done, you can go find a place where you can sit with a pen and paper. Yeah, I know that's kind of archaic, but. But with pen and paper in hand, I would like you to sit and write down 10 things that are cool about you. Now the first time I did this, I remember saying, what's cool about me? I don't know if that's, that's kind of a weird exercise. But then the person I was actually doing this with, Shawn Stevenson, he's a three foot giant. Talk about confidence. The guy's been in a wheelchair since he was born. The doctor said he wouldn't live 10 days. He's lived 338 years. I think he is right now. And he's amazing. He's a doctor. He's broken over 280 bones in his body. He works out every day. The guy's got more confidence than anyone I've ever seen in my life. So if you're going to listen to somebody about confidence, that's the guy to do it. You think about it. He says, hey, when I walk in a room, all eyes are on me. He goes, how lucky am I? All eyes on me. I walk in, I'm like, I'm bad, I'm bad. I mean, that's this guy with a doctorate degree on top of that. So Smart, such a good guy. Anyway, I did the exercise with him and I remember sitting, thinking and I'm like, alright, I'm going to do this for him because he wants me to. And I've adopted it. I've written about it in books. I talk about it on stage now I'm talking about it with you right now. I remember sitting and I wrote, wow, what's cool about me? I had dyslexia. I was in special reading. Teachers thought I was dumb. Nobody thought I'd ever do anything right. I still can't spell good, but I got multiple New York Times best selling books. That's pretty cool. So. So I wrote that down also. My parents were married nine times. I lived with my grandmother most of my childhood. It was a pretty chaotic childhood. And I'm a really good dad. I wrote that down. I'm a good dad. That's cool. I'm a good dad. I thought about all the problems that other people have had and I love walking in when there's a mess. When people think that there's no mutual ground, the deal's not going to work. I love walking in. I'm a problem solver. My dad had a lot of issues when I was growing up and I used to like solving his problems. So it built this muscle in me as a problem solver. I'm solution oriented. I see a problem, I'm 100% focused on how to fix it. So I wrote down, I'm a problem solver, I'm solution oriented. That's pretty cool. Then I thought about it. I'm like, there's so many people that don't know that I know how to change motors, change brakes. Fix a car, you wreck it. I could fix it. I was in collision shop. I could paint a whole car. I know a lot about cars. That's pretty cool. I used to own a bulldozer and a backhoe and an excavator. When I built houses, I dug the hole, I did the bulldozing. I think it's pretty cool. I could jump on any. I could jump on a D8, one of those monster bulldozers and drive it as good as the next guy. I thought that was cool. And I started writing and as I'm writing I'm like, oh, wow, that's cool about me. Oh well, that's cool. And all of a sudden this feeling and I'm like, sean, you bastard, I see why you did this. Like literally I was watching my physiology change. I was watching my vocabulary change, I was watching my excitement Excitement, change. All of a sudden I started thinking, damn it, that's cool. Damn it, that's cool. Damn it, that's cool. And I had this list of 10 things you watch when you do this. If you let yourself go, the first two or three are tough. And then I'll say, no, no, I remember this. It's cool about me. I asked my wife. Everybody wanted to date my wife. Everybody was trying to. I went and asked her and I got her. Or my husband was someone, you know. Whatever it is, you write this down and you start seeing traits. But here's the byproduct of doing this exercise is when your confidence is lacking or when you want to boost your confidence to the highest level possible. To walk in and close the deal. To get the money, start the company, quit a job, get the promotion, get the guy, get the girl, whatever it is, when you want it. Pull out your list of the 10 things that's cool about you and remind yourself of the amazing accomplishments that you've achieved. Remind yourself of the goals that you did, the things that you were scared about, and you failed, but you overcame and went to another level. Remind yourself about your unique abilities or your core competencies. Remind yourself of that time in space, in a moment that made you cool, made you proud, made you feel like you achieved something. If we can live in that state, if we can live there more often, which we all should, we will make different decisions because you'll be making decisions from the eyes of someone cool, not the eyes of someone scared. So that's my lesson for today. What's cool about you is an absolute key component. It's a success habit that can carry you, carry your confidence and allow you to make the decisions to take you to the level of life you deserve. Remember, all success starts right here.
