The Video Business is Tougher Than Ever. Here’s How to WIN.

Den Lennie (host) introduces a YouTube channel aimed at helping video business owners thrive despite a contracting market by teaching practical, actionable strategies. Drawing on three decades of experience and coaching hundreds of video businesses (and working with coaches Matt and Caleb from the Video Mentors VBA program), Den outlines three core pillars: strategic positioning (niching to solve specific client problems), business systemization (standardized processes for onboarding, production, delivery, feedback), and value-based pricing. He provides concrete case studies (e.g., James and Paola), cites community metrics showing price increases and revenue growth, and lays out a weekly content plan with templates, guest experts, and opportunities for viewer submissions and reviews.

The video industry is tougher than ever. Clients are harder to find, budgets are shrinking, and the noise online is overwhelming. But when positioned correctly, it's possible to charge what you want, win great projects and build a business that serves both you and your family. And that's exactly what this channel is here to help. Hi, I'm Den Lenny and after three decades in the video industry, traveling to over 60 plus countries, working with top brands and coaching hundreds of video business owners, the pattern of success and failure are clear. The goal here is to break it all down and share everything for free right here on YouTube. This channel's focus will be on marketing critiques, offer breakdowns and pricing strategies, real actionable advice designed to help you attract better clients and increase your revenue. To submit marketing or pricing or anything related to your business for review and get real time feedback here on the channel. This isn't a solo mission either. Myself, Matt and Caleb, coaches from the Video Mentors VBA program will also be part of this journey, sharing insights and real world strategies that are helping video professionals grow inside our powerful community. Now, let's be real. The industry has gone through a rough year. A wave of new coaches has flooded this space, pushing one dimensional advice that often does more harm than good. But those who understand how to navigate tough times not only survive, they thrive. For honest, proven strategies to grow a video business hit, subscribe now. This channel is all about cutting through the noise and providing real, practical insights that make a difference. Listen, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. This video industry has taken a hit. 2023 and 2024 brought challenges that many weren't prepared for. But here's what you won't hear from most people talking about this industry. The tough times are actually a blessing in disguise. Why? Because when the market contracts, it separates the professionals from the hobbyists. It separates the actual business owners from the technicians with cameras. I've been through three major market contractions in my career. The 2008 financial crisis, the pandemic in 2020 and the current market correction. Each time the same pattern emerges. About 30% of video businesses shut the doors. Another 40% barely hang on, cutting prices, selling gear and taking any job they can get. But the remaining 30%, they actually grow. They thrive, they scale. So what's their secret? Well, that's exactly going to unpack on this channel. Through our work with hundreds of video business owners, we've identified three core pillars that separate successful from the struggling pillar. One is about strategic positioning. Now, this isn't about having the best demo Reel. It's about solving specific problems for specific clients in specific industries. The days of being a generalist videographer are gone. They're over. Let me share a quick case study. One of our clients, James, was struggling to break $75,000 a year doing general corporate video. We helped him to position himself as the go to video producer for a coach that supported dental practices in the US who were looking to attract high value dentist clients to sell their coaching programs. Within eight months, he was on track for $220,000 working with just 12 clients a year. You see, he got involved with the coaching group and then won lots of other dental clients as a result. That's how niching works. The math is simple. Narrow your focus equals higher value and better client. Most video producers run chaotic businesses. They reinvent the wheel with every project thinking that has to be unique and different. And they have no standard processes for the things that we do time and time again. Like client onboarding, production workflows, delivery protocols, including a clear and concise method for making sure you get feedback on time. Not having this creates stress, inefficiency and ultimately caps your earning potential. We'll show you exactly how to systemize every aspect of your business so you can scale without burning out. If you're still pricing based on day rates or what the competition charges, you're leaving serious money on the table. Here's a hard truth. Your prices have nothing to do with your cost. They have everything to do with the value you create for your client. When one of our clients, Paola, shifted from equipment based pricing and time based pricing to value based pricing, she increased her average project from $6,000 to $24,000 without losing clients. In fact, her client retention actually improved. Now you might be thinking, this sounds great and theory then, but how does it work in today's tough market? Let me share some real numbers from our community members. 62% have increased their prices in the last 12 months. The average revenue growth among active members is 43%. Client retention rates have increased by 37%. These aren't outliers either. These are ordinary video producers who committed to running their businesses differently. And many of them would call themselves introvert. The key is implementation. Knowledge without action is useless. That's why each video on this channel will include clear, actionable advice, specific steps for you to implement in your business today, real examples from our community, and templates and frameworks you can use immediately. Here's what excites me about the current market. As budgets tighten, clients are becoming more discerning they're looking for your expertise, not just execution. And this creates a massive opportunity for those who position themselves as strategic partners rather than technical vendors. Think about it. When a business is careful with their money, they don't want the cheapest option. They want the safest option. They want the highest ROI option, which means they want to make sure they're not risking their investment. Your job is to become that option, and that's exactly what we'll help you do. So here's the plan moving forward. Every week I'll publish a new video tackling a specific challenge facing business owners. Today, we'll deep dive into marketing strategies that actually work specifically for video businesses. Pricing frameworks that increase your profits, sales processes that convert without being pushy, and systems that create freedom in your business. I'll also be bringing in Matt and Caleb and other guests regularly to share different perspectives and strategies that are working right now for our clients. And yes, we're inviting you to submit your own marketing materials, business challenges, pricing proposals, and any other questions you might have. Just drop the details in the comments and we might feature your business in an upcoming video. This isn't about theory. This isn't about what worked five years ago. This is about practical, proven strategies that are working right now in today's market. One of the issues with coaches is they often sell you what worked for them in the past. That doesn't work. Because they did something well doesn't mean you can do something well. There's all sorts of reasons why they would have succeeded and market conditions would be a big factor. So this is about teaching you practical, real life what's working now so you can adapt it for your business. If you're serious about growing your video business, hit subscribe, turn on notifications, and join us on the journey. The video industry might be tougher than ever, but the opportunity is there for those who know how to seize it.
