240. Burning Smell
28 Jan 2026 · 1 min
Derek Cole answers a question about a burning smell from electric heat strips. The smell is usually just dust burning off when the strips first run, and it's not dangerous unless your breaker trips. Running them during maintenance can help clear it out.

Foreign. Hey, this is Derek Cole. Welcome to the Derek Cole Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. And the majority of this podcast come from clips of videos with Q and A sessions. Sometimes I put the clip, sometimes the whole show. But usually the clips are kind of bite sized pieces so you don't, you know, have to listen to me all the time for, you know, seven, 10 minutes. But these are helpful clips and I hope you enjoy it. Again, let's get right into it.
It's gone from, I don't know, March, April. So March, April till now. Without running heat strips. Without running heat. So what happens is dust builds up on those electric wires and once those are, it burns it off. Therefore you get a burning smell. So that is what you're getting in the house. Usually it's nothing dangerous. Now if it was dangerous, it would obviously be too much for the wiring and trip the breaker and be a safety hazard. So if none of that is happening, then it's probably just burning off the excess dust from not being used. So that burning smell, when we come out and do a maintenance, we activate the heat strips this time of year to get out of the way. So that really first cold night, if you haven't used it already, you won't have that problem.
