28 Jan 2026 · 5 min
This is a solo podcast episode ("292. Air Filters - Healthy Home Challenge") by Derek Cole promoting a free five-day Healthy Home Challenge (video series, daily emails, worksheets) that teaches homeowners and businesses how to improve indoor air quality. The episode introduces HVAC as the pathway for indoor air, explains air filters and MERV ratings (higher MERV = more efficient at trapping allergens), shares a personal motivation (Derek’s 2012 multiple sclerosis diagnosis), and issues multiple calls-to-action to sign up at simmons1hour.com, share the episode, and rate the podcast.

Someone has a problem, we can immediately address it and fix that problem. And that's really when I became passionate about this business because I saw how many lives we could affect by what we're doing, because we have, we're an H vac, heating in air. I mean, the air in your home travels through your heating and air system, your duct system, so many times a day. We can actually control what the air is, how clean it is or how dirty it is. We can actually start controlling that air, which in turn is going to control what you're breathing. It's going to control some health benefits. It's going to help you understand and control those germs and bacterias and things that all come into the house. But going to break it back down.
Over the next couple of days.
I've been there for 20 years, guys who don't know my story. Again, my name is Derek Cole. In 2012, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. One of the effects I have is slurred speech. I have tremors. So during the videos, if you see that going on, just know that I'm not in pain, don't worry about it. But it is going to happen. But really, in 2016, I started realizing that, hey, you know, the same thing with doing homes, taking control of that air is the same thing I can start doing with my body. Even though there is no cure for ms, I can't control how I exercise, what I put in my body, what I eat, what I drink. And that kind of goes the same principle because you can start control what.
Is in your air.
So I want to start today with the module one here and we're going to talk about air filters. And air filters are categorized in what they call MERV ratings. MERV rating is basically the higher the number, the more efficient the filter is, the better it is at controlling allergens and things in there.
