322. How To Know You Have The Right Air Filter
28 Jan 2026 · 0 min
Derek Cole explains how to pick the right HVAC air filter: check the MERV rating (higher numbers catch finer particles, MERV 8 is a solid middle ground) and test the fit with a light tug. A clogged filter can freeze your system and tank performance.

Thanks again for listening and let's begin. What kind of filter?
What kind of filter do you need? Now we cover this kind of deep in the Healthy Home Challenge. You can go to our website simmons1hour.com to to get free five day access. But we got a, a whole section about air filters. The air filter is. It can be tricky as to which it can be tricky and confusing as to which one to buy because like I said before, you have all these options, all of these options on air filters. Which one, which one do I choose? Which, which one's best for me? Well, here we provide our club members with a filter at their maintenance. It's a mervate filter, kind of middle of the road. Not fancy. Not, not, not fancy, but not terrible. It's kind of, it's a good merve. Eight is a good middle of the road. Filters have what's called MERV ratings. The higher the number, the more efficient the filter is, the stopping the smaller particles. So you have a 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 11. You have all these numbers. But which one's the best for my home? It really depends on your duct system and how tight your system is. So when you go to the air filter, when you go to the filter grill, you should be able to give a light tug to get that filter. If the unit's running to get that filter out. A light, light tug, a little tug to get the filter out, and you put it back. It should pop back in pretty much by itself. You just lay it down, let it go, and it'll come back in to the filter grill. That is a perfect filter for your unit. It shouldn't, you know, smack it shut. It shouldn't backing in. And also it shouldn't just lay there on the filter grill and you have to force it or put it in to the actual return. So you wanted to suck in itself, but you don't want to smack it in, and you don't want it to. You don't want to have to force it in. So that is the perfect filter for you. Now, it could be a Merv 6. It could be a Merv 13. I'm not sure. It depends on your system as to which one you need. Now, when we come out to the home, we can tell you which one's better for your system. We can see the duct and look at it and see the linkage. We could even take a step further into a duck leakage test to see how much leakage you do have. But if you want the merve, if you want to stop the confusion, if you want to get the same filters that we provide our club members on our visits, you can go to simmons1hour.com free filters. It's a three pack of filters. We cover it, we take care of it. We have bought the filters. Just need you to pay for shipping, handling and tax. 995 plus tax. So if you want those, those are available. You can get them. You don't have to, but it saves you a few steps because already this summer we have seen calls. The breakdown is strictly related to the filter has stopped up, the unit is stopped up, it can't breathe, it's freezing up, it's breaking down, it's not working. And it's all because the filter has not been changed. And we want to help you prevent that problem. So take advantage of the free filters if you want to. Again, simmons1hour.com free filters. Merve Filter as good as. That's a good middle of the road. It's a good middle of the road filter to kind of gauge where your system is and if you need a better filter or if you need to go above that and start air cleaning again. We talk about that and the healthy home challenge. What air cleaning, how you get into that and what that entails when you start air cleaning. But that is the filters. So appreciate y' all being here and hopefully next month I'll see you there and we'll do some, some Q A. Or you can always email me your questions and we can, we can address them on the meeting.
