332. Long Run Times
28 Jan 2026 · 4 min
Longer AC run times beat frequent cycling because startup draws the most power and continuous running keeps the system from falling behind on cooling and dehumidification. Proper sizing and operation matter more than you think, especially in hot, humid climates.

So we give this quite a bit of My unit is running. It's not stopping. Is that normal? Is it, is it not more efficient for a unit to come on, get to my thermostat temperature and to turn back off than is for it to run all day when it's 95 degrees outside? Well, you have to kind of, you know, step back and think of this as miles per gallon in your car? Is it more efficient when you're driving? Is it more efficient for you to be in stop and go traffic or is it more efficient for you to be on the interstate to get to where you're going as far as gas mileage interstate, right? Same thing with your unit. It wants to maintain the temperature on your set point thermostat. So if you're at 75 degrees, it wants to maintain 75 degrees. It is much more efficient for the unit to run, to not get behind than it would be for it to turn on, turn off, turn on, turn off, turn on, turn off. The most power it pulls is when it starts, when the unit starts, that is more power than if it was to run. So for the unit not to get behind would be the goal, would be more efficient, right? So I had a lady coming here a few few years ago who unit was running and Running. Running. I said, what's the set point? She said, 75. If I said, well. I said, what's the temperature? She said, 75. I said, well, that's good, right?
She said, no, because the unit will not stop running.
I said, well, it doesn't want to get behind so it's not going to stop unless it's ready to stop. It's just not going to, you know, stop to get behind. I say, it's kind of like when you drove up here from your house. How many times did you turn off the AC in your car? She said, I didn't. I said, why not?
She said, because it would have gonna hide.
I said, exactly. Your, your system is the same way. It doesn't want to get behind sandwinderal. I mean, so you know, on those really hot days it's going to run and run and run because it doesn't want to get behind. The system should be sized properly and if it's working properly, it's going to run longer. And you want it to run longer because it's more efficient for it to run longer. And plus, especially in this part of the country, you get better dehumidification when it runs longer. We have hot temperatures, very high humidity, so we want those longer run times so the air has more of a chance to be dehumidified and the water is removed so you don't have that cold clammy feeling you may get in some of these other buildings you go to because it doesn't have the time to go across that corio to dehumidify. So you want that air dehumidified. But longer run times when it's really hot is completely normal.
