369. Fan Not Turning
28 Jan 2026 · 0 min
Derek Cole walks through why your outdoor HVAC unit fan stops running. When it fails, your system burns through electric heat strips and your bill spikes. The culprit is usually a defrost cycle glitch, bad control board, or thermostat problem, so call a professional to fix it.

So when your fan is not turning on your outdoor unit and it's warm in the house, the thermostat is reaching temperature, it's warm, it's a cold day, but you look outside and there's outdoor unit, the fan's not running. That is a problem and that needs to be checked out because what's happening is you're using, you're using your backup heat, your heat strips, your electric heat as your primary heat source, which works. I mean, you're comfortable in the house, so that's fine. But it's going to be very painful when you see that energy bill and the energy usage for that period of time. Because you're using street electric heat strips in the home versus using the heat pump and the heat strips as a backup heat, which is what they're designed for. So that's something needs to be cheered out by pro to see what's going on with that system, causing it not to run and causing it to only run on the electric heat strips. Again, it's going to get you by, it's going to get you heating, but you're going to have that shock of when the energy pill comes in of how much energy that system is using, only using that, you know, secondary source as the primary source for heat, which is not designed to do. It's only designed to do it in emergency cases or as a backup to the heat pump. But you're using it as a primary source all the time. So check out that or unit, outdoor unit, see what's going on. Is it a defrost problem? Is the board problem? Is it a thermostat sending problem? Did the thermostat, you know, have a glitch and you know, kind of reset and it's back to default settings and maybe it's not set up correctly. That's, you know, things that could happen. And I want you to remember too, with these digital thermostats, they're like your phone, they're like anything else digital. They're like mini computers and they got processors and stuff in them. They can glitch, they can reset, they can have a little bug, a little problem and need little manual reset. So it's, you know, it's not uncommon, it's not unheard of. It's, it's kind of rare, but it does happen. Is that happening in this case? So that's one of those things. As soon as you notice it, if you don't, if you don't notice it by walking around your house, you will notice it when the power bill comes in because it's going to be extraordinarily high. It's going to be really high power bill. When you see that happen, you need to call pro in there, see what's going on with that system.
