Derek Cole explains what happens when you switch your HVAC system from cooling to heating in winter. He covers thermostat settings for the season change, why your house smells musty when heat kicks in, and how heat pumps use backup heat and defrost cycles that produce steam and noise.

Winter has finally returned. Make sure your thermostat is on auto or heat because you probably in these last couple days you probably had to use cooling in the house. So make sure your thermostat is on auto. If you haven't put on auto yet, but if you have it on cool, make sure it's on heat. That way when you call for heat, you actually get heat and take off cooling. It's kind of a shocker to go from 60s, 70s to 40s and you know, 30s. But welcome to North Carolina and and winter appears to be back. So make sure you're ready for it. Make sure thermostat is at the right temps and probably what you're going to smell when you go straight from, you know, AC right to heat. You'll probably smell kind of a standing water kind of musty smell. And when you get that, it's in the switch and it should only last, you know, one or two times when the heat comes on. If it lasts more than that, there's probably some kind of growth or something going on in there and needs to be checked out. But you know, kind of that musty odor or musty smell, it's probably going to happen the first time you switch over and use the heat from the EC so Winter is back. But you can always, if if you have a question you can always send me a text. My number is 9104-6358-1191-0463-5811. Just shoot me a quick text or question and yeah, ask me what's going on and see if we can help you out and get you an answer. But yeah, Winter, yeah, Winter has returned.

If you have a heat pump, your backup heat will come on. I know sometimes it kind of freaks some, some folks out when the backup heat is on because it's, you know, it's straight electricity is running up your bill. But really the backup heat serves two purposes. Mainly is to supplement the heat pump. So in this area, when in this area, if you have a heat pump when it gets below 40 degrees, it really starts to need help reaching the set point in your house. So if you got it on 72, it needs help getting there because it's so cool outside, so cold that you need something to add to it. That's why you have the backup heat, the strip heaters for, for that reason. The other main reason you have the backup heat is because of a defrost cycle. So what happens when you have a heat pump and it's in heating mode? It's actually extracting the heat from outside. So when that happens, frost builds up on the coals. So at some point it needs to get rid of that frost. So what happens is it actually reverses the flow of refrigerant and turns into AC mode. So in AC mode, you're taking the heat out side from the house outside. So when that happens, it's going to melt off that frost. So your backup heat comes on because you know you don't want to be cold inside. So when that happens, your backup heat will come on as well. And what's really, what's, what's really strange is it makes a very loud noise when it switches over to the defrost cycle. So usually you hear the loud noise, you look outside, you see your heat pump, steam's coming out from it. So you think something's wrong when it may be the defrost cycle. So I just didn't want you to freak out. It is going to happen with these, you know, cooler, cooler days, cold mornings, cold nights, the steam will happen from the heat pump, the backup heat, your secondary heat will come on to supplement all that.
