Derek Cole explains how to use ceiling fans to save energy and stay comfortable. Run them counterclockwise in summer to create a wind-chill effect that lets you raise your thermostat. Fans work best paired with your cooling system, not instead of it.

One of the things I think is very underrated in homes and virtually everyone has them, is the ceiling fan. I think the ceiling fan is one of those kind of looked over items in the home that can really help you actually in heating and cooling. But today we're going to talk about cooling. So in cooling, you want to use your ceiling fan in a counterclockwise motion. Counterclockwise is going to create that wind chill effect. So to kind of give you an example of the wind chill effect, if you were to go outside and it's, you know, sun shining, no clouds, 70 degrees and you were to go sit outside in the sun at 70 degrees, okay, you would probably get a little bit warm, right? Now imagine sitting in that sun at 70 and maybe a five mile an hour breeze, little breeze going. It feels pretty good, right? Feels a lot better than no breeze right? Now imagine sitting in the shade on that 70 degree day and that same breeze is blowing. It's probably going to be a little bit cool and it's going to definitely be a lot cooler than the first or the second example. That is the wind chill effect. That is what you want to create in your home when you're in the room. Obviously you still want to use cooling.
You still want to have cooling, but you want to also create that wind chill effect because you don't have to quite your thermostat as low as you may think. But if you're in a room with a fan on, that's going to be a lot cooler than if you're sitting in a room with no fan. So use the fan to your benefit. Most folks have ceiling fans in place in rooms. It's something you can, you know, pick up at any big box store and, you know, take care of, but it's worth the investment. It uses, you know, little energy compared to turn your thermostat way down. But don't, don't discount or don't, don't avoid the ceiling fan. Okay, I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Derek Cole Podcast. Tell some people about this episode.
