28 Jan 2026 · 4 min
Derek Cole's second tip: set your thermostat to cooling mode and avoid big temperature drops during peak heat (90s-100°F), since recovery is slow. Pre-cool before guests arrive and account for extra heat from cooking, appliances, and people.

Tip number two on the four ways to stay cool this summer. Tip number two, check your thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is set to cool, which at this point it probably is. Or if it's on auto, make sure it's at the set point you want another great tip on those really hot days. We're talking 90s talk, 100 limit, sending your thermostat back when you leave the house. What do I mean? So what I'm saying is if you set it back to 75, but when you get home at 5:30 or 6 or 6:30, you want to be 72, it's going to have a harder time getting from 75 to 72. On those really hot days. When you're coming off of the hottest part of the day and you first get home and you want to crank it down to 72, it's going to have a hard time getting there until it gets dark outside. There's such a low demand on the home. It's going to have a challenge in getting that temperature achieved. So what I do personally now, you know, is that every individual, but I don't set my thermostat back too far when I'm not home. You know, when I get home, it, you know, whenever I get home, I like it to be the temperature I like it to be at. You know, I don't want to be coming off of the hottest part of the day and then, you know, we gotta cook or we got the dryer on and then I want the temperature to come down. So I'm adding heat and people, people are heat. So I'm adding all this to the home. But at the same time, I'm trying to bring down the temperature. And it's 95 degrees outside, so it's trying to maintain 75, but I want it to be 72. So now it's, you know, working as hard as it can to overcome all this stuff I'm throwing at it with the cooking and the dryer and the people coming in, the door opening and, you know, all these factors play into what the temperature is and how hard your units are going to work to get there. So be conscious of that. Especially, you know, if you have folks over this time of year, when it gets warm, go ahead and. And what we call pretty cool the house, meaning, you know, go and sit it a little bit lower. Then when the people come in, you got the people load. You know, everybody's 98 degrees, right? So everybody's coming in and then you got the door opening and closing opening closing opening closing so you're letting in that 95 degrees summer air humid air into the home so it's trying to dehumidify take into account the door opening the the folks in the home so go ahead and pre cool because you know when you have the spokes come in the temperature is going to raise by default it's going to raise because it has to you've added you know this extra load onto the system so if you have a party or people over pretty cool personally again personally I just don't set my thermostat back too much because I like to be comfortable when I get home and I don't want to you know face that battle so keep it at a constant temperature pretty cool before folks get there if you're going to have folks over just a few quick tips things to do with their thermostat to give you an advantage or to give you a leg up on this hot weather coming.
