539. Do I need refrigerant every year?

Your AC shouldn't need refrigerant every year. If you're getting yearly top-ups, you have a leak that needs fixing, not a normal maintenance item. Get it repaired properly instead of refilling it repeatedly.

Is your unit always running low on refrigerant? We get the phone calls all the time. I need, I need to get topped off. I need one to two pounds of refrigerant. Can you help me out? No. Your system should not need refrigerant. Every 1, 2, 3, what, whatever years are, the unit shouldn't need refrigerant. Is a closed system. Just like your body is a closed system. If you're starting to bleed, you go to the hospital or doctor and say, hey, I need some blood. As they're going to say, what's going on? You just don't need a refill of blood. So why do you need blood every single year? What's going on to cause that to happen? Same thing with the unit. Why do you need refrigerant every single year? Every couple of years, something is going on. The system like your body is not using up refrigerant, your body's not using up blood and all of a sudden you need some more blood. Your unit is not using up the refrigerant and you need more refrigerant. You need more refrigerant because it's leaking. If it's leaking, you need to finally fix the leak and stop from happening. Because just like your body, if it runs low on blood, if your system runs low refrigerant, it's going to run into issues, it's going to have problems. It's not normal to have this going on. So get the leak fixed and then get recharged on the right amount of refrigerant. Do not keep adding cost every single year, every two years to just adding refrigerant. Hey, it's hot outside. I think my unit needs freon. That's not normal. It shouldn't need to happen like that. I just posted this article on my LinkedIn page. I'll put a link here in the comments so if you want to check it out, you can. But stop wasting money on adding refrigerant.
