548. What Brands Don't Tell You
28 Jan 2026 · 4 min
HVAC expert Derek Cole argues that brand names matter less than proper sizing and installation. Most components come from the same few manufacturers, so brands are nearly identical. A bad install with undersized lines and wrong tonnage will fail regardless of the name on the unit.

I'm going to reveal something that most people don't know about their H Vac system. Unveiling the truth about your air conditioning system. Brand. It's not all about brand. Look, most systems are only made by a handful of manufacturers. So regardless of its trane carrier, Goodman, Coleman, York, a handful of brands make all the heating and air equipment. And within that, only a handful of companies make things like the compressor, the reversing valve, the boards, the controls of the system. Only a handful of manufacturers actually make those products. So it means basically all brands are very similar. There's only a handful of companies making the major components of the brand. So what matters is who is there to service that brand? Who is there to take care of you, the customer, when something goes wrong? And how is it installed? A saying we have around here is the most important day of it of the new system is this installed. It's not a box that you can pick up at Home Depot or Lowe's like, like a fridge, plug it in and be done with it. No, the heating air system has to be comfort sized for your home and then has to be installed by a professional to the standards that need to be handled. We've gone to so many situations in which a name brand system, you know, a name brand system that's marketed that you see TV commercials on, you see ads on. It doesn't matter how good that equipment is or how great the brand is, if the people installing that equipment installed. Rome is doomed. From from day one, I went to a home here in town and it was upstairs system and it was, I think it was like a three and a half ton system for the upstairs. And the line said going upstairs was like 5, 8. It was not even close to being big enough. It was never going to work. It doesn't matter that they had the name brand piece of equipment. Installation was not going to do the customer any justice. It's not going to do the customer any good because it was installed wrong. They did not go by the manufacturer's instructions to install the piece of equipment. So heating air units, the most important thing is not the brand, it's not the brand name. All the equipment, the most important thing is who installs it and then who's going to take care of you, who's going to service it? Because it is the machine, it needs maintenance, it is going to break. Who's going to respond when that happens? Who's going to be at your driveway, at your front door when you need them the most? It's not going to be the brand. The brand's not going to be showing up. It's going to be a contractor. Who do you trust? Who's going to do the best job at servicing you? The customer and the equipment. So lay off a brand. Brand is not important. The contractor who installs it is.
