579. The Stealth Invader
28 Jan 2026 · 8 min
Podcast episode explaining that organic growth (mold/microbial) can develop inside residential HVAC systems, often unseen. The speaker outlines signs (musty odors, visible black growth, allergy/respiratory symptoms), root causes (dust buildup, moisture/condensation, darkness), health implications (respiratory issues, allergic reactions, long-term effects), and recommends natural prevention/remediation such as UVC/UV technology and choosing the right company/products.

The hidden culprit in home comfort. When we think of organic growth or the N word, we might imagine images of damp basements or old shower walls. But what if I told you that growth could be thriving in the heart of your home's H Vac system? The very system meant to keep the air in your home pure and comfortable? Growth in H Vac units is a problem that can go unseen, affecting your health and the efficiency of your system. Understanding this, I like to call it the stealth invader. Understanding this stealth invader means taking a closer look at the clues it leaves, the the health implications, and most importantly, the steps you can take to prevent its occurrence. Identifying growth in your H Vac system can be challenging because it's really, for the most part, an internal issue. However, several signs could point to its presence. One, musty odors. If you've noticed a persistent unpleasant smell that reminds you of a damp, musty environment, like dirty clothes, like a dirty clothes hamper, that could be a sign. Number two, visible growth. If you can see black looking stuff in any part of your H Vac unit, there's likely more you can't see. And number three, allergies and health issues. Organic growth tends to affect homes with allergies. I'm sorry, let's do it again. Number three, allergy issues. Number three, allergies and health issues Issues. Organic growth tends to affect those with allergies or respiratory issues more severely. If you or your family members, if you or your family members are experiencing unexplained health problems, this could be the culprit. Identifying these signs early, can it help take preventive steps before the problem becomes overwhelming? But probably the bigger question you're asking is, Derek, why? Why? Why is organic material in my system? Why is it in my home? Why is it in my H Vac system? Well, your H Vac unit is a haven for this kind of growth for a couple reasons. Number one, dust and debris buildup. The natural buildup of dust debris offers an ideal environment for spores to settle and grow. Number two, moisture and condensation. H Vac systems can create moisture through the process of cooling or heating. This combined with the right temperature, it's all it needs to thrive. Number three, darkness. Ducks are dark. This darkness only serves to provide an environment where things can grow without being disturbed. I like to mention one ways to. One of the ways to core the growth is with UV light, with UVC technology. The same technology that's outside with the sun and, and the ozone layer. Things that happen naturally in the environment. Well, Your H Vac unit is in a dark, damp place. If it's in the crawl space, typically it's in a dark, damp place at some time. So it's going to thrive in that environment. Right? There's nothing to stop it. So you have to make what happens naturally outside. You have to make that happen inside your H Vac unit. Because at some point or another, all the air in your home is going to travel through that system that needs to be protected. On average, studies show we spend 90% of our time indoors. The EPA says indoor air is two to five times worse than outdoor air. So we spend 90% of our time Indoors. But the indoor air is 2 to 5 times worse than outside. What's outside? The sun, UV, UVC, ozone. Things that help control this from happening. By understanding these elements, you can start to see why growth could take up residence in your H Vac unit. Let's talk about health implications. I mean, the growth of stuff in your H Vac unit isn't just about a potential repair bill. It's a serious health concern. Number one, respiratory issues. Breathing in spores can lead to respiratory conditions like asthma. Number two, allergic reactions. From a stubby nose to severe asthma attacks, growth can. The growth can trigger a range allergic reactions or allergies. That is stuff you don't want to be breathing in. And number three, long term effects. Prolonged exposure to spores can have long term health impacts, especially in children or older folks. It's clear that maintaining a growth free HVC system is critical for health of you and your family. Like I said, we have solutions to combat this stealth invader. The main thing you have to do, you have to have the right company, the right products, the right knowledge to battle this head on. We have that available here. We have the technology, the same thing, natural technology, natural products. Not chemicals, not sprays, not anything to mask over what's going on. But natural solutions. The same natural solutions that are outdoors. Again, indoor air is two to five times worse than outside air. So the solution, bring what's outside, inside.
