655. Indoor Air = 5X Worse Than Outside
28 Jan 2026 · 6 min
Podcast episode (Host: Derek Cole) arguing that indoor air can be 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air (cites EPA), explains how HVAC systems—particularly cold coils, condensation in drain pans, and units located in dark/damp crawlspaces—promote organic (microbial/moss-like) growth that is circulated through ducts, and recommends treating this at the source using UVC (UV light) and carefully controlled ozone applied inside the duct system (not living spaces) to neutralize organic growth and VOCs. Emphasizes curing root causes rather than surface chemical fixes and links to a full article on the host's website.

Home and Life Comfort with Derek Cole. Welcome back to the Home and Life Comfort podcast. I am Derek Cole, and today I have a question for you. What if I told you the air inside your home is actually worse than the air outside, not just a little worse. According to the epa, indoor air can be two to five times worse. Two to five times more polluted than outside air. Let's break down what's really going on and what you can do about it. Number one, the hidden problem. Most folks think pollen, dust, or maybe pets are the main air quality problems in their homes. But the truth is, one of the biggest culprits is your H Vac system itself. Now, inside your unit, what happens is you get warm air hitting at cold coil, condensation is dripping into the drain pan, and everything is sitting in a dark, damp space. Because most of our installs are in the crawl space. Dark, damp space. That is the perfect recipe for organic grass growth. So, number two, think about the north side of a tree. You know, I give this example quite a bit. You ever notice moss always grows on the north side of a tree or the north side of the house? That's because it never gets direct sunlight. Your H vac system is the same way. It's hidden. It's dark, it's damp. Without sunlight, which is uv. Uvc. Actually, without sunlight, growth takes off, and then it gets blown through your duct system and into your home. Number three, the fix. Bringing the sun into inside. Now, this is handled outside, naturally, with sunlight. With uvc. UVC from the sun. UV light is like bringing the sun indoors. It neutralizes organic growth before it can spread. And here's the kicker. It also helps that chemical soup we all live in. We're talking about paints, cleaners, volatile organic compounds, VOCs. But you take a step further, combine UV with ozone, proper ozone, and you're breathing fresher, cleaner air inside your home. Just like nature handles those things outside, you bring that inside into your home. Now, ozone is usually a bad word. Ozone's gotten a bad wrap, and it is dangerous at the wrong levels. But if you do it the right levels, you can handle the air. Breathe fresher, cleaner, indoor air, and it gets rid of those gases. At the wrong level is bad. At the right level is good. Everything, everything is bad at the wrong levels. I mean, when you think about water, you need water to live, but you can also drown. So too much water is bad. You know, taking medication can help you get better. Taking too much medication can cause problems. Too much bad, Enough of the right levels, good. Same thing with ozone, if it's in the right levels and handled in the duct system, not the room, handled in the duct system, it will be at the right levels. And actually the levels coming out of the grills at home is actually less than what's outside right now. Number four, we believe in cures, not band aids. Too many effects are just band aids. Wiping something down, spraying a chemical on it, that doesn't solve the cause. We go after the source. What's causing it to happen? What's, what's making this present? Let's handle it that way. We don't cover it up. We cure it. We don't spray chemicals. We handle it naturally with ozone, uv, the same products that are used to treat the outdoor environment. You can bring it inside your indoor environment. So if you're dealing with allergies, headaches, or just still air, don't ignore the solution. May be as simple as putting the power of the sun inside your H vac system. Now, I wrote a full article on our website, on our blog. If you want to check it out, head to Simmons One hour Comm.
