Fighting the Cynicism
28 Jan 2026 · 5 min
Derek Cole argues that cynicism spreads in groups and that staying positive requires deliberate effort. He uses the ERU method (Event + Response = Outcome) to show how your reaction shapes what happens next, and shares how living with MS taught him why this matters.

Hey, what's up, guys? Welcome to the Derek Cole podcast. It is 8, 8, 10 at night, and I'm working, of course, but as I was working and answering some messages and trying to provide some, some positive impact, I thought this was, you know, pretty good. Something you might want to hear, which is, you know, positivity always wins. I mean, it's so. It's so easy to get involved in the negative thinking of other people. And, you know, when the whole group is negative is really hard to be positive. And when things are. Or when things are really bad, it's hard to be positive. And trust me, you guys know, I have ms, I have a speech, you know, it affects my speech. It affects, you know, everything. And even for me, it's hard to stay positive a lot of the times because you don't feel good. You can't speak, you can't write, you can't, you know, move the way you want, you can't. You can't walk the way you want. But it's something to always keep in mind because it's so easy to get negative and, and to kind of feed into that and kind of join the crowd, join the group. But you are responsible for how you act. You are responsible to be positive, to shut that noise out. Believe me. It's so easy to get involved. And you've seen it, You've seen it, you've done it yourself. It's so easy to get involved and kind of piling on to the negative, piling on to the problems, agreeing with the crowd. But it's your job to, you know, as my, as my guy followed Brian Kite, Tim and Brian Kite, who do the ERU method event plus response equals outcome. One things he says is, you know, it's your job to push positivity. It's your job to outlast the cynics because if you don't outlast them, they will outlast you. And then all of a sudden you're involved with them and you're just one of them. So I don't know, just a real quick thought, you know, eight ate at night on a weeknight and I'm working and just some kind of feedback on what's. What I'm thinking about what's going on. But anyway, if you guys like this, enjoyed it, want to hear more of this versus, you know, kind of, kind of mix up the content a little bit. Feel free to reach out, leave a review however you're listening. This Google Apple, whatever podcast you have there. It's, you know, so Again, it's so easy to give in to, to the group, to give in to the cynics, to give in to the negativity and, and, and the behavior. It's really hard to maintain that positive attitude. And you don't, you know, you don't have to do it, you know, fake, you know, being fake cheerful, being that fake person that's. And, you know, everybody's like, they're a little, I don't know. You know, you can turn around and be a different way. You know, turn that negative, negative sentiment around into a positive one. Be positive. Look on the bright side, look on the positive side of things. Again, hard to do. Easy to say. Hard to do. Believe me, with Ms. And things I face on a daily basis is it's difficult to remain positive because all you want to do is complain and cry and go in the corner and be depressed and be by yourself. It's really difficult to, to push, push positivity and push that frame of mind. So anyway, hopefully encourages you to stay positive. Keep pushing. Hey, I'm with you. I know it's difficult. It's hard, but let's keep going. See you next time.
