A short audio guide by Derek Cole (also read once as Derek Hall) summarizing the top four homeowner mistakes to avoid with residential heating and air systems: (1) change your air filter roughly every 30 days to prevent dirt buildup that insulates coils and increases energy use and wear; (2) avoid DIY equipment installs—hire a professional for correct sizing/installation, peace of mind, and to obtain full warranties (speaker cites a 10-year parts & labor install warranty and a two-year unit-replacement guarantee on core components like compressors/heat exchangers); (3) obtain professional maintenance twice a year and consider joining a service/club for extended repair warranties (speaker says repairs carry a 1-year parts & labor warranty, doubled to 2 years for club members), discounts, and priority service; and (4) avoid frequent thermostat adjustments because repeated starts/stops increase wear and peak energy draw. Foreign. Hey, my friend. This is Derek Cole, and welcome to the deluxe audio version of the PDF. Top four mistakes to avoid in 2021 with your home heating and air system. Again, my name is Derek Hall. I've been in the business for almost 20 years now and seen over 50,000 service calls. And I wanted to put something together that really kind of blended, you know, the breakdowns I've seen, the constant problems clients have called in on. You know, is there a common theme? Is there a, is, is there something I can put together to help you in 2021 to avoid some of the mistakes that homeowners can make? So I came up with this list for the top four mistakes to avoid. And we're just going to get right into it. I mean, number one, not changing your air filter. Not changing your air filter filter. Energy Star states that checking and changing your air filter is one of the most important things you can do for your system. The air filter is designed to help protect your equipment, which is one of the top energy users in your home. Dirt and debris trapped by your filter helps prevent your system from, from having to overcome those insulators, from getting on the critical operational items your system uses. So what does all that mean? All that means is heating air is about heat transfer. So you want to make it as energy efficient as possible for the heat to transfer between the cooling coals. And to do that is to keep it clean. So when dirt and debris get on those coils, on those items, it acts as an insulator. What does that mean? That means it's harder for the heat to transfer. So making it harder to transfer the heat makes this system work harder, which in turn increases your energy bill. And it also, the harder the system has to work to overcome the dirt and the buildup, the more energy you spend and the harder it works, like everything else, the shorter the life of those affected parts are. So you want to make it as easy as possible for that to transfer heat. And to do that, you need to keep it clean. And to keep it clean, you need to change your filter. So do not, do not skip out on changing your filter every 30 days. Check and change your filter. Very simple thing to do is just go to your phone, Go to your phone, set an alarm every 30 days it just says check and change your air filter. Technology has made it so easy to these days for reminders, and this needs to be one of those reminders in your phone that you always check because something very small can make a very big difference. Tip number two of the top four Number two, avoid doing it yourself. When you don't hire a pro, typically you don't get pro results. And I understand, I get it. Hiring a professional isn't cheap, but hiring a pro gives you something else. Two, and don't discount the peace of mind. It gives you the peace of mind. We have received More calls in 2020 to install equipment or parts the homeowner purchased on the Internet or the marketplace or a neighbor. I'm not exactly sure where all this stuff has come from, but 2020 was, has probably been the year that we've received more of these phone calls than any other. And you're probably thinking why not? Why can't you do that? Well, first of all, we, we can't warranty that unit. We can't guarantee the performance of that unit. We can't even guarantee it's the right system for the space we're installing it in. We can't guarantee it's working properly. There's too many, too many unknowns. And today when we do an install, we give you a 10 year parts and labor warranty and numerous guarantees depending on which level of system you get. Depends on the additional guarantees. But they all come with a two year no limit warranty guaranteed many if the heart of the system. The heart of the system, the compressor or the heat exchanger. If those items fail in the first two years, we replace the whole unit, not just the item. So if it's the outdoor unit with the compressor, we replace the whole thing. We replace the whole unit, not just the compressor. If it's a heat exchanger, replace the whole furnace, not just a heat exchanger in that furnace. That's how much we're standing behind what we install and how we install it correctly. When you talk about repair and repair warranty, we give you a one year parts and labor warranty on a repair that we do. If you're a club member, if you have a maintenance contract, we actually double it. We actually give you a two year parts and labor warranty on that repair when you maintain that club. Because we know back to point number one, if the unit doesn't have to work harder, if you change that filter and the unit doesn't have to work harder, then partial last longer. That's why we can give you that warranty. There's so much peace of mind almost, almost no questions asked when a pro does the work for you. As we say around our office, shortcuts lead to long falls. Don't be the one holding the bag and left holding the bag. When something Goes down. Give yourself a break. Pay the pros to handle the job. They are trained professionals with years of experience. Let them take care of you. Tip number three, Tip three, avoid not taking advantage of regular maintenance. What am I talking about? Well, this is what I've learned in my almost 20 years. Homeowners typically fight fires instead of practicing prevention. I'm guilty of the same thing I had a years ago. I had a water in the crawl space problem and just like every homeowner probably I ignored it. And you know, as most of us, I ignored it. And you know what it led to me having to replace the section of floor support beam. But the good news is $15,000 later, problem solved. Yeah, probably should have paid attention before then, before it got to be that big a problem. Doing regular maintenance on your heating and air system, which is twice a year. The manufacturers recommend twice a year. It doesn't have to be before the spring or before the winter. As long as you get it done twice a year. Goes back to point number one and point number two, you know, keeping it clean, clean, the filter, clean filter. Not doing yourself right. We can double the warranty if we do it. The repair on a club we do repairs, a two year false life warranty, right? It's because you're doing this, they're doing regular maintenance for that homeowner twice a year. It's a simple way to help your energy bills, help prevent breakdowns. And most companies provide you a repair discount and priority service when breakdowns happen if you join their membership. So going back to point number two, it's a two year parts and labor warranty, right, for repair. On top of that, we actually give you a discount to do the repair because you're in that club. So most companies, if a pro, if a pro has a solid agreement program, it's almost a no brainer to join because the good vastly outweighs the cost. Whatever the cost is, all these benefits outweigh that cost. Go back to our club members, to your parts and labor warranty. Armor repair with the discount with priority service. You know, most companies make it an absolute, you know, no brainer because the good vastly outweighs the cost. And finally, tip number four of the top four mistakes to avoid, avoid adjusting the thermostat. Avoid adjusting that thermostat. Simple, simple, yet so hard, especially during the extreme temperatures. You don't, you don't need to play all the games. Going up and down and seeing schedules and away and home, you know, if you're coming right back home, you don't need to be playing with the thermostat because in most cases all this adjusting and the unit starting and stopping causes wear and tear that just isn't needed. It is more efficient for that unit to run than it is to start and stop. It pulls the most power or the most energy when it turns on. It's kind of like your car. It's more efficient to take the interstate than to go downtown and do stop and go traffic, right? So it's more efficient for your car miles per gallon to, to run, to be non stop then to be stop and go, stop and go. And your system is the same way. And if your system is running quote all the time when it's like 95 degrees outside or 90 degrees and your thermostat is set to 75 or 72, it's going to run all the time. And that's fine because it's trying to keep you at that temperature and not fall behind. So the main point, stop adjusting, stop playing with it, leave it. Enjoy the comfort of the home and stop trying to save a few dollars. Just enjoy the comfort.
