What Brand?
28 Jan 2026 · 3 min
Derek and William field questions about HVAC brands and argue that who makes the equipment matters less than how it's installed and serviced. Most core components come from the same few manufacturers anyway. A poorly installed split-system with undersized refrigerant lines, they explain, is like breathing out of a straw.

Hey, this is Derek Cole.
Welcome to the Derek Cole Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. And the majority of this podcast come from clips of videos with Q and A sessions. Sometimes I put the clip, sometimes the whole show. But usually the clips are kind of bite sized pieces. So you don't, you have to listen to me all the time for seven, 10 minutes. But these are helpful clips and I hope you enjoy it. Again, let's get right into it.
The equipment and a lot of the questions we get is what brand do you carry? And William, why are customers really concerned about what brand is?
Well, most time they're, they're concerned because they're getting information from a family member or a friend or they see a commercial on TV or it's. They've had a brand since they've been at the home, the same brand since they've been at the home, and they're looking for someone to replace it with that particular brand. But really and truly today their brand is really not important.
Yeah, I agree with you. Because there's basically two or three compressor manufacturers, which is the heart of the system.
That's right.
It's only a couple. People make the boards, the valves, everything in the unit is only made by just a few companies. So brand is not really as important as it once was.
That's right. If you take today's equipment and you take the top casing off of them and you set them all out in the yard, more than likely you wouldn't be able to tell which brand was what. And if you really get down and want to know truly about brand and equipment. Derek, the most important day of a system is the day it was installed. So if you have a system, no matter what brand it is, if it is properly installed and installed to manufacture specifications, you know your system is going to be one is going to be as good as the other.
Exactly. I'll give you a real life example. Just down the street from us, a customer came in, had a problem, another company installed the unit. So we went over there and this is a three and a half, four ton unit upstairs, split system. And it's got a five, eight lines here running to it, which is basically the blood vessels of the unit. So this unit is trying to operate, breathing out of a straw basically is what that means.
Yeah.
So that it doesn't matter if that was a major brand, an off brand, didn't matter what brand it is because that unit was doomed from day one.
From day one. That's right.
So it's really important who installs it. Who's going to take care of it? Who's going to take care of you in the future? Not so much about what brand it is.
That's correct.
