How to make music fill your whole video

Ross Zeiger shows how to loop a music track across your entire video in Descript. Change the Duration setting from once to loop, then use scene markers to control where it stops. Any edits to the original audio, like volume changes or fades, apply to every repeat.

A student in one of the Descript Made Easy community group calls this morning asked, how do I take a music file and make it repeat throughout my entire video? Well, you could duplicate it and just have it play over and over and over, but there's a much easier way. Let me show you how. And it only involves a couple clicks. So right here, this green layer is a music layer. It's called Lovely Harp No Voice, and it plays for 3 minutes and 20 seconds out of a 10-minute video, and I want it to fill the entire video. So if I click on it and I come over to the properties for this soundtrack, right here in the duration box, it says once. That means it's going to play just once. That's the default behavior. If you click on it, there's a dropdown and your other option here is loop. You click on that and check out what just happened on my timeline. Now that 3-minute and 20-second soundtrack is looping over and over throughout my video, which is about almost 3 full times. Now let's say I don't want it to loop throughout my entire video and I want it to go until about the 8-minute mark. Well, I can move my playhead to the 8-minute mark, click right there. I can drop in a scene by typing in a forward slash, forward slash on my keyboard that drops in a scene. And if you don't know about how scenes work, check out my video that I'm gonna link in the top right corner. But now that that scene is made, I can go to the end of where the end of this song loops, and I can notice my mouse turns into a bracket. I can click and I can drag to the left, and that audio layer snaps to the boundary of the scene just like that. And if I want to bring it back again, I do the thing in reverse. I get the bracket, I drag to the right until it snaps to the end like that. Now also note that the part that is looped has these diagonal lines going through it. That indicates that it's a loop as well as this little icon right there, little circular icon. So this part, the solid green, is our original audio, the original soundtrack, and any changes I make to this will affect the loop as well. For example, if I lower the audio, so if I drop that to 10%, now that original part plus its loops are going to be dropped as well. Now where you might get yourself in trouble, be careful about this stuff, is if you do like a fade out, for example. If you click on that white dot and you create a fade out on the original soundtrack, It'll also fade out the loops, or you can trim the original soundtrack and notice the loop still goes all the way to the end of the video. But I'm just, I'm having a smaller portion of the original soundtrack. So it's now 1 minute 38. So 1 minute and 38 seconds is what's going to loop throughout the rest of my video. If you ever get stuck in Descript and you have questions and you want me to answer them live, Come to my group coaching calls. We do them 3 times a week as part of the Descript Made Easy community. And I'll leave a link for you in the description of this video.
