Dharmesh Shah argues small business is where tech innovation happens next. Enterprise software misses real needs, consumer tech is a lottery, but small business combines scale with sustainable problem-solving: find a specific customer problem, charge them to fix it, repeat.
And the reason we picked small business is because one thing we have learned about enterprise software, it sort of sucks. Then consumer tech was essentially too kind of lottery ticket style, too what I call like a binary outcome. Either you create the next Facebook and you're bazillionaires or it's nothing at all, right? So the appeal of small business for us was it had the scale of consumer, but then you could still kind of build a business the old-fashioned way, which is solve a problem and charge people money to solve it. But the original idea was like, okay, we want to do something in small business.
