What Are Immutable Laws and Why You Need Them

Core values that guide every decision in a business, from hiring to design. Speaker B calls them immutable laws: non-negotiable principles like "blood money" for frugality and "no dicks allowed" to ban jerks. They act as filters so everyone knows what the company stands for.
Okay, so in The Pumpkin Plan, you talk about immutable laws. What are immutable laws? Good question.
So immutable laws are the values or the rules that the organization holds fast. In fact, it emanates from the owner themselves. So you just look at your own values and and say, what are the things that I absolutely stand for? Conversely, what are the things that I don't stand for? And that defines kind of the rules that you live by. As an example, here we have a rule called blood money. And while we don't use that term often, it set the cultural standard that as a company, we're relatively frugal. We treat it as a very valuable asset. We treat it like blood. We have another one called no dicks allowed. That's the most popular one. Among colleagues here, but the rule here is we will not do business with dicks, but nor will we behave like dicks, right? It's not acceptable either way. And then those immutable laws, those values, in any element of your business, use those to filter in and filter out anything you're considering. The website, is it a site that represents our brand? Does it represent the importance of frugality? Is it— another one I call positivity or death. Is it positively oriented? Is it a non-dickish website? Does it show humility, right? When we're hiring employees, we look for those exact same values, and I think it speaks for itself. It serves us extremely well. We have a culture here we've developed of people that I just, I can't believe I get the opportunity to work with, and we've built a strong company, because when people come in here, they're instantly up to speed. They get it. They know how to represent us because We are them and they are us. So it's just the ultimate filter for not just employees, not just website design, any element of your business.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you.
