Mihail Pautov explains why building muscle while losing fat is hard: you need mechanical tension from lifting, enough amino acids for protein synthesis, and hormones plus recovery time to work. Weight loss should be slow to keep the muscle you have.

Can you explain what happens in the body that makes it that hard to build new tissue in the muscle using the energy you extract from. From the fat?
Well, if you're looking to build new tissue, you have to create enough mechanical tension. You have to create enough stimulus. But then, for muscle protein synthesis, you do also have to supply the right amino acids, and that becomes really twofold. Those are the two ways, really, to build muscle. Course, there's hormones, but it's really contraction and then providing the new amino acids and then giving time for recovery. If someone wants to lose weight, there is a calorie balance that must happen, and that would be requiring to reduce total calories and also train to maintain that tissue. And do that slightly slowly over time, because the faster you lose weight, the faster it's going to be a combination of muscle and fat.
