A leaky gut lets undigested proteins into your bloodstream, triggering your immune system to attack your own thyroid, nerves, or muscles. Dr. Jeffrey Gladden says fixing gut integrity could be the key treatment for autoimmune disease and longevity.

I think the gut is the central lever for longevity, performance, cellular health, and immunity. So I think that the more you work on the gut and optimize the gut— 'cause a lot of times the molecular mimicry that we're coming— that we get from leaky gut, like where proteins that are undigested escape into the bloodstream, and on the other side of the bloodstream we get that molecular mimicry where we create an immune response to that protein and it looks like our thyroid, it looks like our myelin sheath, it looks like our acetylcholine receptors. So the more you optimize the gut, the more impact you will have on longevity and immunity.
I mean, we already treat the gut as a primary form of treating Hashimoto's, but it seems like this could be even Hashimoto's thyroiditis if you're listening to this antibody that attacks the thyroid. But it seems like this could be a, you know, I don't know, a golden arrow to fire at something like this along with the other things.
