Dr. Jameca Cooper recalls how Gen X kids roamed outside unsupervised until the streetlights came on, with older kids responsible for bringing everyone home uninjured. If one cousin got hurt, the whole group was in trouble.

Gen X survived because our parents had a different idea of supervision. They didn't have to sit outside with us and watch us for hours. In fact, we stayed outside and played outside all day and most of the evening until the streetlights came on. But what they did expect from us is that we supervised each other. So in other words, if I got to walk in my house at 7:00 PM, all my cousins better be right there with me, all intact, and nobody better be hurt. Because if one person is hurt, we all about to get hurt, if you know what I mean.
