Is it Extraversion or Histrionic Personality Disorder?

Dr. Jameca Cooper explains how extraversion, a normal Big Five personality trait, differs from histrionic personality disorder. Extraverts are energized by social interaction; histrionics have a pervasive need to be the center of attention and often experience significant dysfunction as a result.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper Cooper. First, make sure you subscribe to the channel. Today we're going to talk about, is it extroversion or is it histrionics? So let's talk about the differences between if you're an extrovert, so a person with an extroverted personality, or Or do you suffer from histrionic personality disorder? It's very important that you know the difference. Many times people get them confused and they think one thing means the other, but it does not always necessarily mean that you're suffering from a personality disorder. It could just be that these are the traits that you have that are part of your personality. So extroversion, um, you've all heard the term, you probably know what it is, but I'll tell you just in case. If you are an extrovert, you are a person that is likely more social more gregarious, more outgoing, probably more outspoken. In other words, you thrive by being around other people. You thrive by speaking to people, going places. You're probably also likely going to be more assertive because that tends to come with being extroverted. Likely, if you are an extrovert, you will gain your energy from social situations. So what I found in therapy through the pandemic is that many people that are extroverts have suffered a great deal because with the social distance and the forced staying-at-home orders that we had all across the country, extroverts suffered. They were not able to get the socializing time and the energy from other people that they were used to, and they tend to got to get more depressed as a result of that. So if you're an extrovert, you're likely going to thrive on social situations. In other words, you would get recharged, you would get your energy from social situations, um, as compared to an introvert. If you're an introvert, you likely thrive on spending time alone. You need to be by yourself to kind of regain and recoup your thoughts, to process things, to process information, to spend time by yourself and recharge before going back out to deal with people in social situations. So that's the difference between introversion and extroversion. If you are an extrovert That simply means that you gain energy from other people and from social, social situations. It also means that you really thrive on connecting with other people. Now, that's very different from someone that would suffer from histrionic personality disorder. If you suffer from histrionic personality disorder, you desire, demand, and need, um, really at your core level, you need attention, you need for people to look at you, you need for people to focus on you. And that is very different. They are not the same thing. If you're an extrovert, you simply thrive on connecting with people socially, versus if you are an histrionic personality disorder, you thrive and demand and need to be the center of attention. So two very different things. One, extroversion is really a personality trait. Um, when you think about personality traits, um, in psychology, we call them the Big Five. Extroversion is one of those personality traits, um, so it is really the core of who you are and it's how you interact with the world. But very, very different from histrionic personality disorder. That is something that is going to be more of a pervasive, consistent, and extreme set of behaviors that you will see over and over again, to the point, um, that it usually causes some dysfunction in individuals' lives, and the individual who suffers from it as well as the other individuals around that person. So Two very different things. Extroversion is a personality trait, and histrionic personality disorder is a personality disorder. So two very different things. Hopefully you understand the difference. And make sure you subscribe to this channel, make sure you tune in for more videos on personality disorders, especially histrionic personality disorder.
