New Year's Affirmations

Dr. Jameca Cooper shares two New Year's affirmations from Belize. First: mothers and women of color should prioritize self-care before caring for others, like putting on your own oxygen mask. Second: parents should stop expecting their children to fulfill their unmet dreams and let them chart their own paths.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper, and as you can see, we are on location in sunny Belize in Ambergris Caye because one of my New Year's resolutions was to get more work and life balance. So for me, this means getting out of my workspace in my home so that I don't have all of the distractions that come with me working and staying at home, such as laundry, childcare, etc., etc. So here we are because I wanted to make sure that I put my New Year's resolutions into practice. Today we're focusing specifically on affirmations, New Year's affirmations. If you've looked at any of the 30 Days for Radical Healing videos, you've seen them talk about affirmations, trauma, dysfunctional family, and the benefit of affirmation. So today I want to focus specifically on affirmations directly for you. One of those I want you to focus on is about yourself and your self-care. So specifically, the affirmation— and whether you say this to yourself every day in your head, if you say it to yourself every day out loud, or if you post it on a Post-it note somewhere in your home where you can see it every day. What I want you to think about is, I prioritize myself and make sure that my self-care is a priority because I cannot make sure that the health of everyone around me is good unless I focus on myself first. So that affirmation is what you can say daily just to make sure that you prioritize your own self-care because just like on the airplane when they say put the mask on first, you cannot take care of anyone else unless you take care of yourself first. Another affirmation that I want especially moms, so women of color moms, to focus on this year is about the pressure and the expectation that we have on our children. So I want you to specifically focus on this affirmation: Today I release my children from the need and the expectation expectation to please me or to complete me. Many moms, many dads even, have this expectation that their kids follow a certain path, their children follow a certain path, because that path is what they need in their lives and it's what is going to matter to them, make them happy, make them proud, and make them feel as though as parents they've done a good job. But I want you to focus this year on not doing that. Allow your children to have their own lives, to have their own direction, and make their own mistakes. So today Today I've given you two different affirmations for the new year that you can use not only for yourself and your self-care, but also to help to clear out some of these expectations that you have for the loved ones around you. So again, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper, and this is 30 Days of Radical Healing.
