In this video, Dr. Jameca Cooper explains Kevin Samuels' concept of a "high value man," which he defines as a man earning over $10,000 a month, who is socially connected, peer‑accepted, and prominent in his community. She highlights the statistical reality that very few Black men meet this income threshold, noting that the data underpin Samuels' claims. Dr. Cooper then explores why many African‑American women react negatively to the concept: they feel the standard is unattainable or that it implies they must become "high‑value women" to be considered suitable partners. Drawing on her clinical experience working with Black women in therapy, she observes that many of these women do indeed desire the high‑value men Samuels describes, which creates a tension between desire and perceived accessibility. She concludes by inviting discussion on how this framework impacts dating and marriage within the African‑American community and encourages viewers to comment and subscribe for future content on mental health, reality TV, and related topics.

Today we're talking specifically about Kevin Samuels. Who is this guy, right? He's quite popular among YouTubers and people who are interested in dating advice and how to be more attractive for dating and marriage purposes. So one of the things that Kevin Samuels talks about in his videos is this whole concept of a high value man. So what is a high value man? I'll give you, I guess, the highlights of it, the things he says, um, makes a high-value man is a person, a man who makes over $10,000 a month, a person who is connected and connected to his peers and accepted by his peers, and also one that maybe is seen as prominent in their community. So not a lot, but seems like when I watch the show, a lot of women have an issue with this whole concept of of a high value man. So what is the problem with Kevin Samuels, uh, concept of a high value man? Why do so many women have an issue with it? The one thing that I will say is that we need to focus on the word high. So in this high value man phrase, high, what he's saying is this is the type of man that is considered a little bit above the other one. Um, it makes sense, right? When you look at the income and you look at the statistics about how many men, especially Black men, who make a certain amount in salary. This is what he's considered high value, high value based on the income level per month and per year. And he's looked at the numbers, he already knows the numbers, and they're very low percentages of these men when you look at the demographic of Black men. So it is what it is. You can't really argue with statistics very much. The issue that I think a lot of women have is that women feel that these type of men, um, in their minds have been appropriate, um, companions for them. In other words, they feel that they are seeking these type of men and that that is in their market and in their range. So what Kevin Samuel says is that that is not true. Only a high-value woman would be an appropriate mate or desired by a high-value man. So I'm not sure what the issue is and why women have a problem with it, because I believe everything he says about the numbers and— and those categories are actually true. And I can go back to what I see when I'm working with women in therapy. And many of the women that I see in therapy, especially African American women, these are the types of men that they desire. So if these are the types of men that you desire for a partner or a mate, then you have to listen to someone in that demographic and who knows that demographic in order to give you the tips and the information you need in order to attract that type of man or to be in the certain places where you would meet a man of that nature. So I'm not sure what the issues with, um, the high value man and the concept are, but I totally agree with many of the things that Kevin Samuels says about high value men and how they see women and what they are attracted to. I think the issue that most African-American women have with that is that Kevin Samuels describes that category of men as something that may not be attainable for some women, and I think women have issue with that. I'm interested to know your comments on that. Be sure to leave your comments on this video. I would like to do more videos in the future about that, answer some questions, and provide some more ideas about this whole concept and where we are in the African-American community dating and marriage.
