As a psychologist of over 20 years and a Gen X parent, I can easily see why this would work, and I can easily remember times in the past where, um, might have done something similar or definitely seen it done, because in Generation X, this was probably considered normal. Let's talk about the disadvantages of using this as a strategy with your young child. One is they could develop a heightened sense of anxiety or worry that they're going to be removed or taken from their parents. And number two, it teaches them compliance out of fear, when what you really want to do is teach them to comply out of understanding and an agreement between you as a parent and them. Advantage, of course, is probably immediate compliance. And you get what you want. The parent gets to have a sense of control with that. But like I said, it's also important to look at what the disadvantages could be or the long-term consequences.
