Dr. Mark van Rijmenam (author of "Step into the Metaverse") discusses how to understand the metaverse before assessing generative AI’s impact. He busts myths (the metaverse is not simply gaming, VR, or web3) and defines the metaverse as the convergence of physical and digital worlds into a "phygital" experience, based on interviews with ~250 people building an open metaverse.

And to really understand what the impact of generative AI is and how it will redefine the Internet, we first have to look what the metaverse is. And in order to do that, I first want to get rid of some of the myths. The Metaverse is not gaming. The Metaverse is not virtual reality. The Metaverse is not web3. However, it can be all of the above, but it doesn't have to be. And I think that's important to be aware of. So what is the metaverse? So for me, the Metaverse. When I did my research for my book Step to the Metaverse, I interviewed about 250 people who are building the open metaverse. And based on these interviews, based on my research, I came to the definition that the metaverse is where the physical and the digital world converge into a so called phygital experience, augmenting both the virtual and the physical worlds.
