Short video (YouTube) in which Dr. Allen Nazeri DDS MBA contrasts delegation and empowerment in dental practice leadership. He defines delegation as assigning tasks while closely supervising outcomes, and empowerment as assigning tasks while emotionally detaching and accepting the assignee’s results. He argues empowerment builds employee confidence and creates leaders, warns that micromanagement chokes high performers and increases turnover, and promotes his training programs (live, telecoaching, on-site) and website. What is the difference between delegation and empowerment? See, delegation is when you assign a task to someone and basically you watch them very closely of what they have done and you make sure that the outcome is exactly what you want it to be. On the other hand, empowerment is when you assign a task to someone and emotionally you detach yourself from the task and from the individual and you agree to whatever the outcome or the result of that assignment is. See, empowerment is very important if you want to grow your practice and if you want to create leaders within your practice. Sometimes I'm surprised to see doctors are such a micromanagers and not to blame the dentist when I did not know any better. When I was younger, you know, out of the school, I was very similar to most doctors practicing until I invested time, money and tried to go and learn about leadership, team building, empowerment and so on. So one of the challenges I see is that you have a doctor who has a team member, maybe in their mid-20s, 30s or 40s and they give him a task to do, but then they watch him so closely that they cannot even breathe. You know, See, remember these people that we have on our team, they make decisions and good decisions every day in their own daily life. So we can trust them by giving them clear direction of what needs to happen. See, the biggest problem with leaders is that they expect things, but they are not able to communicate exactly what that clear direction is. If you give someone a clear direction and if they have already been with you for a long time, the chances are that they can carry that task very well to the end. This is why empowerment is important to build self esteem and confidence of your employees. And this is how you create leaders within your practice. But at the fault of many leaders, they take a star player, an eagle if you may, of a team and they micromanage the person so much that they choke. And this is why they switch teams and they switch, you know, companies and so forth because they cannot grow. My name is Dr. Allen.
