Business Owners: Watch This Before Announcing a Sale #exitstrategy #learnbusiness

Dr. Allen Nazeri explains when to tell employees about a business sale using a medical group case study. Announce after the purchase agreement is signed but before closing. Align your message with the buyer's, emphasize stability, and follow up one-on-one.

If you're selling your business, when do you tell your employees? Too early and you lose them. Too late and you lose their trust. I'll show you exactly how to time it. I recently helped a multi-location medical group sell to a strategic buyer. The buyer wanted to keep every staff member and invest in new equipment. But if we told employees too soon, rumors would tank morale and patient confidence. Here's the rule: announce after the purchase agreement is signed. But before the deal closes. That window gives employees time to process the change and get behind it. Four things change your timing: the type of buyer, how complex the deal is, whether jobs are changing, and what your confidentiality clause allows. Don't guess. Each deal is different. When you do tell them, align with the buyer first. Lead with the opportunity, not the change. Highlight what stays the same, then explain what gets better, and follow up one-on-one. In that medical group, physicians were reassured their contracts were safe, staff learned their roles, and pay stayed intact. We held regular check-ins. Not a single person left, and the buyer paid a premium because of it. Protect confidentiality. Respect your team. Communicate with clarity and empathy. Do that, and your transition protects your legacy and your people. Going through a business sale and not sure how to handle your team?
