Dr. Allen Nazeri outlines how to handle problem employees: define what "bad" means, diagnose the root cause through conversation, coach them if they're willing to improve, and remove them if nothing changes. Watch for attitudes that resist teamwork.

One of the questions I often get asked is, Dr. Allen, how do we deal with bad apples on our team or bad or unmotivated employees? Well, we have to define what bad is. If there is an employee obviously that is causing trouble in the practice, we need to talk to them and we need to find out exactly why they are doing it and give them the opportunity to correct their behavior. But if they're not correcting their behavior, it's very important that we immediately eliminate them from the team. Now if you're talking about a bad employee because it seems like they're not motivated or somehow.
They'Re just like a weak link within your team, then there are number of things you can do. Obviously you cannot have a weak link on your team for a very long time because what happens is that someone who is a weak link and basically there are some signs to that there are generally people who cannot keep up pace with other star players. And typically the star players go out and help them out in various capacity. And after a while what happens is that your star players, they pretty much become resentful of the fact that they're always helping somebody else out. So it brings the morale of the company down. So if you have a weak link on your team, the first thing you need to do is obviously you need to coach them and try to see if by training them and investing in their professional development they get better. If not, you may have to remove them from the team and replace them in another department. May they suit better. Now sometimes it may not work. So you may have to get rid of them altogether. But identifying the weak links is very important. And then generally speaking there are the people who don't want to work on their personal weaknesses, they don't want to work with other team members. They typically have the attitude that they know everything and they don't want to fulfill their expectations in the area that they work in. So these are some hints I want to share with you.
