A short coaching video by Dr. Allen Nazeri (DDS, MBA) advising dentists on patient communication regarding full mouth reconstruction. He emphasizes asking probing questions rather than trying to convince patients, links collapsed vertical dimension and short teeth to medical symptoms (neck pain, numbness in fingers, snoring/sleep apnea, bruxism, migraines) and suggests learning about oral–systemic links to better counsel patients. He also promotes his training programs (3-day Dental MBA, communication courses).

During my coaching session this morning with one of my clients, one of the questions that came up is, Dr. Allen, how do we convince a patient to have full mouth reconstruction done? Well, I never convince patients to do anything. That is not my job. My job is to explore the problems that the patient has and they may not be aware of it and let them lead to the conclusion that they need a full mouth reconstruction done. See full mouth reconstruction. When someone goes through a full mouth reconstruction, let's assume that they have all of their own teeth, but their vertical dimension of occlusion is collapsed. The teeth are short. Usually there are symptoms, medical symptoms associated with it, such as pain in the neck, having numbness on the fingers, having snoring or sleep apnea, bruxism, jaw spasm, muscle spasm, chronic migraine headache and so forth. And there are number of other studies have been done that when the teeth are short or the patients are lacking teeth, it can also be related to other issues such as Alzheimer's, such as cardiac atrial fibrillation or arrhythmias. And a lot of that has to do the cardiac arrhythmia with the sleep apnea as well. So one of the things you need to do is you need to ask questions from your patients. Then they'll understand you are a different category of a dentist. You have certain knowledge that the average dentist does not have. And that is your duty and obligation to go out and learn all these things. And you know. More and more reports are coming out how medicine and dentistry are really interrelated. Meaning that the oral systemic diseases are interrelated to a point that now there are dental groups in the US that are opening up medical and dental center as integrated facilities. So this is what you need to learn and we go through that through. Whether you sign up for my 3 day dental MBA or take one of our courses in the mastering communication skills, you will learn all of these questions, how to ask good questions. So we never convince, we never push patients on any treatments, but we ask very, very thorough questions so that patients come to the conclusion to the fact that what they need is what we have to offer. My name is Dr. Allen. If this is the first time you're reaching me, I help doctors, dentists develop, scale and grow their businesses and exit from them successfully.
