Leadership: Why is important for Dentists?

Dr. Allen Nazeri explains why dentists need leadership skills. He defines leadership as guiding a group toward a shared goal, and notes that dentists manage teams ranging from one assistant to hundreds of staff members.
Often people ask me, why do I need to study leadership? Well, we cover leadership extensively on day two of our three day dental mpa. So let me share with you why leadership is important. Well, leadership is about taking a group of people on a path or journey with a common goal and a vision. And if you're a dentist, obviously you're managing.
Dental team. It could be one assistant, it could be 20 people, it could be 600 people in your organization.
Now.
Those leaders who have developed their leadership skills, they're a lot more effective than leaders who do not have those traits or skills. And leadership is not something that you're born with, but it is a process you go through and you learn. I certainly have become a much better leader than when I was in my 20s or 30s or 40s through learning, through going to seminars, becoming a certified coach and a trainer in the subject of leadership and so forth. Now what's important is that as I mentioned earlier, leadership is about influence. And, and your leadership lid means the capacity of your leadership determines how effective you are in an organization. So let me give you an example. If you are an HR manager, or if you are an HR director, or if you are responsible in hiring and recruiting people, your leadership skill if from a scale of 1 to 10, let's say you are on a level of 7, you would never be able to identify people who are on a scale of 8, 9 or 10 in order to attract them to your organization. So generally what happens is when I consult with many of my groups, I see that their HR director have not been fully developed themselves and they may be operating at effective level of, let's say six or seven. And these all can be measured through various tests and examinations that we have. And so therefore they continue attracting and recruiting people into their organization that are much lower level than them. So guess somebody who's at the seven, what level they would attract. They would obviously attract people who are 4, 5 or 6. You would hardly ever see someone who is a 7 who is ever going to attract people that are much higher leadership level. This is why leadership is. Study of leadership is absolutely important. And I would encourage you to either sign up for one of my telecoaching programs for leadership, yourself, your managers, your team members, or attend one of my three day dental MBA seminars or workshops that we are announcing in various cities across the world. I appreciate your attention. I look forward in having you in one of my class. Please comment below any subject or any questions that you'd like me to answer for you. Thank you so much.
