#243 7 Reasons to Avoid Gluten to Help Clear HPV
20 Dec 2024 · 26 min
Dr. Doni Wilson (naturopathic doctor) presents a podcast episode arguing that avoiding gluten helps clear high-risk HPV and reduce cervical cancer risk. She offers seven reasons: gluten is inflammatory for all humans; humans cannot fully digest gluten; gluten causes leaky gut; gluten disrupts the gut and vaginal microbiome; exposure to glyphosate on gluten-containing grains; gluten is overconsumed (permeates diet); and gluten causes nutrient deficiencies (notably vitamin D and iron — ferritin under 50 flagged). The episode also promotes related programs (14-day detox, 21-day stress remedy) and resources (clearhpvnow.com).

Hi everyone.
I'm so glad you're joining me. Grab your cup of green tea. We're going to be talking about the seven reasons that I recommend to avoid gluten in order to help you clear the high risk HPV virus from your body once and for all. This is one of the things that I specialize in as a naturopathic doctor and women's health expert, is helping women with abnormal Pap smears and positive HPV results. Because we know now that 99% percent of cervical cancer is associated with high risk HPV virus. And I'm extremely interested in reducing the rate of cervical cancer as well as other HPV related cancer for women and men around the world. And so that's why this is an important topic for me. Gluten just happens to be something that I've been an expert in and specialized in for over 20 years because I was forced to learn about gluten way back when I was getting severe migraines and when I had my daughter and she was having severe eczema as an infant, I had to understand the gluten and the role it was playing in order to help heal myself and my daughter. And that led me to researching gluten endlessly. I read all the articles that are available at that time and up till now I was even speaking around the country and around the world about gluten and gluten sensitivity as well as celiac disease, and have specialized in helping people to identify gluten sensitivity and eliminate gluten from their diet for over, well, really over 22 years. And so because of this perspective, because I've had the opportunity to help women with abnormal Pap smears and at the same time help people with gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, I was able to have this unique perspective of observing the overlap and I started to see that there was an overlap, that the women who were having abnormal Pap smears testing positive for HPV were highly likely to also test positive for gluten sensitivity. Now, I'm not going to say that every woman who tests positive for HPV has gluten sensitivity, but I would say it's a high percentage of the time. And when I say gluten sensitivity, I'm referring to doing an IGA and IGG food sensitivity panel from a highly accurate lab. Not just any lab. You got to go to the highly sensitive food sensitivity lab with the right testing to get you accurate results. And if we. When I see high iga, igg, then I know that the person's immune system is trying to protect them from gluten. This is not the same as celiac disease. Celiac disease is when it becomes an autoimmune condition with autoantibodies, which is the gold standard for diagnosing celiac diseases. When we see those antibodies and we do a biopsy to identify tissue consistent with celiac disease. So some women have celiac disease, but the greater percentage of us, we know that one in four, that's considered to be the current.
Incidence of gluten sensitivity. That's not necessarily Celiac disease is one in four people. And it might even be more common than that because not everybody's getting tested. So we don't know everything. But it's quite common to have gluten sensitivity. And I would say, I would encourage. If you're testing positive for HPV and having abnormal Pap smear and it's not getting better, not going away on its own, then I would encourage you to consider eliminating gluten from your diet. And in this video, I'm going to go into the seven reasons why I think that. So the first reason is that gluten is inflammatory for all humans, even if you're not one in four that has gluten sensitivity. Gluten, which is contained in barley, rye, spelt. When I say rye, I mean R Y e. I'm not saying rice. I'm saying barley, rye, as in R y e spelled. And anything with wheat or whole wheat has gluten in it. Gluten is the tiny little protein that's in those grains. Think about it as if you have a plant in the ground in a field growing a grain like barley or wheat, and you then grind it up and you put it into food. The protein component of it is called gluten. And gluten can even be broken down to tinier molecules like gliadin and glutenin, for example. I'm not going to go into that level of detail in this video. I have other videos where I go into that detail. But just to say that gluten is a protein in those particular Grains. And it goes down to these very small molecules that we've been able to research and look at in terms of how the human body responds to anything as big as a wheat molecule to as small as a gliadin molecule. And what we know is that all of these molecules from gluten related to gluten, are inflammatory to humans. All humans, meaning as soon as that gluten, as soon as we swallow it, as soon as it hits our. Even sometimes for some people, as soon as it hit your skin, as soon as it hit your mouth, as soon as it goes into your gut, it's inflammatory. It's triggering an inflammatory response. And what we know about the HPV virus is it loves inflammation. It's like a magnet. If it sees inflammation, that HPV virus is a magnet, and it's going to go there. And especially if that inflammation is in the vagina, that virus is going to go right there and start causing trouble. So we don't want inflammation. We're trying to get rid of hpv, which is absolutely possible. And you'll learn that in my other videos. Absolutely. I see this in women every day. You can heal from the abnormal cells caused by hpv, and you can get rid of hpv. I see it in my patients every day. And we know that that happens. We know that's possible. And we know one of the ways to do that is to reduce inflammation. When we can drop inflammation in your whole body and drop inflammation in the vagina, we're going to be more successful about protecting you from HPV and preventing cancer. And gluten causes inflammation. So what, we're going to be working against ourselves. Right here you are trying to protect yourself from hpv, but you're eating gluten that's inflammatory. It's going to work against you. We don't want anything working against you. Better to just learn how to avoid gluten. And I say it like that because I know it takes time. I know it can be a process. I know we can be. We can become addicted to. Believe me, I used to be addicted to gluten. I'm speaking from personal experience. I used to be addicted to gluten. And I used to think it was going to be difficult to avoid it, and I just had to put my mind to it. And sometimes we get to the point with our health where we say, listen, me feeling good is more important than eating this food with gluten in it. Me avoiding a migraine is more important than me eating this food with gluten. You clearing HPV is more important than eating gluten. And when you get to that point, then you figure it out. Then you're like, okay, let me figure out what I'm going to eat. And of course, I have recipes, meal plans, detox programs, you name it. I've got it all planned out for you, including books like the one you see over my shoulder, where I have. I teach you exactly how to eat without gluten in your life. It's going to be such freedom. Freedom from gluten. Okay, number two. The number two reason that I connect HPV to gluten or gluten to HPV is because no humans can fully digest gluten. Again, this is even if you do not have an inflammatory immune response, a gluten sensitivity, even if you don't have celiac disease, you still cannot digest fully gluten. Humans. No humans can digest gluten fully. It's not in our processes that we don't have the enzymes to digest it. So that means anytime we consume gluten, we're consuming a substance that goes through our bodies undigested and can trigger inflammation and can trigger other issues. So to me, I want to be the eating foods that I can digest, and I don't want to eat something that has a potential for causing issues. So I want to point out that, you know, some people think, oh, it's just some people can't digest gluten. No, no, humans can digest gluten. Number three reason is that gluten causes leaky gut. Not just for some people. Gluten can cause leaky gut for all humans, whether you have gluten sensitivity or not. And for some of us more than others, it's more going to cause leaky gut. What is leaky gut? Leaky gut is when the intestinal cells are not as healthy as they should be. You know, if you think of your intestines like a tube, and the tube is lined with cells, and the job of those cells is to make sure your food's getting digested and your nutrients absorbed so that the food gets digested and the nutrients show up at the cells, and only the nutrients can get through. When it's leaky, which is caused by gluten, then this food doesn't have to be digested, and it can go between the cells undigested, and that's when it starts triggering inflammation and food sensitivities and all of the other problems that it causes. So it actually causes the damage to the cells that allows it to get into our bodies. And cause more damage. We don't want leaky gut. Leaky gut leads to inflammation, leaky gut leads to autoimmunity. Leaky gut leads to susceptibility to infections, including hpv. We don't want leaky gut. We want your body to grow healthy cells so you can absorb your nutrients. So we don't want. We're working on healing leaky gut. We don't want to consume gluten, which work is working against us in that effort to heal our intestinal cells. So gluten's off, off the list in my mind, because my goal is help you heal leaky gut. And leaky gut's caused by stress and toxins, let alone gluten medications. So leaky gut is very common for us as humans. It's more a matter of how severe is your leaky gut. It's not a question of if you have leaky gut. I believe we all have some degree of leaky gut because we all have the root causes of leaky gut. But if you're eating gluten, you have one more cause of leaky gut and it's working against you in your effort to heal. Leaky gum.
I've done a lot of detoxes over the years and many of them made me feel a lot worse. Not only that, but I've had a lot of patients come in and tell me how after doing a detox, they.
Have a stomach ache and headache and.
They can't sleep and they're feeling anxious.
And I'm like, I can't just recommend.
That my patients do to a program that's going to make them feel worse. So I finally decided to design my own detox program. It's a 14 day detox program that's not like other detox programs out there in several ways. One is that I'm focused on helping you to get the toxins out in a safe and effective way, using nutrients, antioxidants, and supporting our natural detoxification pathways in the body. Also, I'm helping you to decrease your exposure to toxins by learning the ways that you've been exposed to toxins and how to change your day to day lifestyle to decrease your toxins over time. And I'm helping you to look not just at chemical and environmental toxins, but also emotional and energetic toxicity. And yes, it's possible to accomplish all of this in 14 days. I have so many patients who have done the 14 day detox and report back to me how much better they feel. And I think it's also because I help you to know what to eat. You are getting adequate food that tastes good plus protein shakes that I developed that are good for your body, that your body knows how to use these nutrients and take them in and use them to help you safely detoxify without feeling worse. Also I help you to balance your blood sugar levels, get better sleep and introduce things like meditation, biofeedback and other types of stress recovery into your day to day routine. So I just am so excited about it. I want to make sure you know about this 14 day detox. I'm going to put the link you can find it at drdani.com forward/detox-program but I'll also put the link below so you can find the 14 day detox program at Dr. Donnie.com I look forward to guiding you through this detox so that you can actually feel better on your way to better health.
Number four reason to avoid gluten if you're trying to fend off HPV is because it disrupts your microbiome. Research very clear on this, very clear that when people consume gluten it disrupts your gut microbiome. And anything that disrupts your gut microbiome is going to disrupt your vaginal microbiome. And when your vaginal microbiome is disrupted, your risk of HPV goes up, up, up. So again, why, why consume something for the temporary taste good or ease or something when it's going to end up disrupting your bacteria? These you're counting on these bacteria to protect you. Your gut microbiome is part of your immune system. It's protecting you from infections, from autoimmunity, from allergies, from inflammation. And you're eating something that's disrupting your microb vat in the gut and vaginally. So here you are trying to solve your microbiome but you're still eating something that disrupts it. It's I think we have to stop and think these things through and realize that we're being, we're working against ourselves. We're causing ourselves to try to paddle the boat upstream against the tide, against the current, when really all we could do is say goodbye gluten and then everything becomes easier. We can start to recover so much faster.
Number five reason to avoid gluten if you're trying to fend off HPV is because of the glyphosate. It's well established, especially in the United States, that any grains that contain gluten are on the farm and they're being treated with glyphosate which is Roundup, it's a pesticide. And so what happens is when we're consuming gluten, we're also getting exposed to glyphosate. A glyphosate is a toxin to our bodies. It affects our immune system, it affects our ability to fend off hpv, and it makes us susceptible to all kinds of immune disruptions, including increased risk of abnormal cells on the Pap smear. So, again, that's another reason to avoid gluten. Even if you can get organic gluten.
Then there's still a risk, right? There's still a risk. So I would say there's another reason to avoid gluten because of the glyphosate. And a lot of people believe that that's one of the main problems with gluten is the glyphosate on the gluten. Okay, number six, gluten. Also, to me, a main reason is that it permeates our whole diet, is we over consume it. What happens is we end up having gluten. If you think about it, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I encourage you. If you're eating gluten, think about what you ate yesterday and think, what did you have for breakfast, what did you have for lunch, what did you have for dinner, and even what did you have for any other snacks? And how many of those meals contain gluten? If you have any kind of bread for breakfast or even cereal, likely it contains gluten. If you have a sandwich for lunch, it's got gluten in this, in the bread. If you have pasta or bread for dinner, it's got gluten. If you eat a cookie or a muffin, it's got gluten. So next thing you know, every single meal, you're eating gluten, and there's. I would say it's hard to find any other food that we eat that much. As humans, we need a variety of foods. We don't want to have the same thing over and over again, right? We need to have a variety. So at the very least, reduce your gluten and get a more variety in your diet. Say, hey, I need some other grains. What about. What about rice? What about oat? What about millet? What about all these other grains and foods that we have out there? We're eating the same thing all the time. No wonder we start reacting to it. No wonder our immune system starts trying to protect us from it. No wonder it starts causing so much trouble, because we consume it day in, day out. Every Day of our lives. And it really shouldn't be like that, not for a healthy human body. Okay. And the number seven reason that I would say to avoid gluten is that it causes nutrient deficiencies. It's well established in research and we see it clinically that there are nutrient deficiencies associated with people who consume gluten all the time. Number one is low vitamin D. D like dog. And we need vitamin D for many, many aspects of our, our human health, but especially our immune system. We also become deficient in iron. Iron deficiency is highly associated with gluten. And so if you're. And you don't just test iron in your blood, you got to test ferritin. And if your ferritin is under 50, you have iron deficiency in your iron storage. And it could be linked to eating gluten because gluten is known to reduce iron absorption in the body. Many people who have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease are low in vitamin D and iron, let alone all the other vitamins. Those are the ones that are the easiest to test for. When I check my patients who have gluten sensitivity and I look for other food for nutrient deficiencies, we find all kinds of nutrients that are deficient. And it's because the gluten is damaging the intestinal cells, reducing the nutrient absorption and reducing the microbiome. So now you're low in your nutrients. And if you're low in nutrients, you're going to be more susceptible to, well, all viruses, but in particular, we're talking about high risk HPV virus. We need you to get your nutrients in and we don't need gluten to be working against us. I'm just thinking of another reason. If I could give you a bonus reason to avoid gluten would be related to blood sugar levels. Because what happens is.
Foods that contain gluten tend to contain carbs and sugar. Right? If you think about it, what are the foods that have gluten? Even bread, high carb. Often there's sugar in your bread. Cereals have gluten and sugar. Any kinds of crackers.
Cakes, pies. These things that contain gluten tend to be high carb, high sugar. And what happens is then your, your blood sugar, you're probably consuming too many carbs relative to protein. Even though gluten is a protein, it doesn't give you very much protein in that food. To get protein, you're going to have to go for protein type foods like animal protein or even nuts and seeds or protein shake. You're going to get more protein and then what you're going to get from a food that contains gluten. So oftentimes when someone's containing gluten, they have high blood sugar levels and their blood sugar is fluctuating. And both high blood sugar and fluctuating blood sugar are associated with higher risk for HPV virus, let alone many other health issues. I can't even tell you the longest list of things are associated with gluten. Everything from osteoporosis, dementia, heart disease, diabetes and autoimmunity. Hashimoto's, for example, Crohn's disease, all of these health issues are associated with gluten exposure. So if you're still thinking, oh, but I really like the gluten, it's going to be hard to convince my family to not eat gluten. I would argue with you that it's time. It's time to reconsider. There are many, many, many other options that taste good. It is not the only food available to us as humans. There are endless other options of foods. And that gluten that is taken over our diet for what reason? For what reason? It's addictive. It causes inflammation and disruptions, and in the case of hpv, it increases risk of HPV and cancer. So to me, I would just take it. You take the gluten off the table and put your focus on eating foods that help your body stay healthy and heal. It's the best decision I ever made is to decide to get gluten out of my diet and out of my home. I am not going back and I am so glad to share this information with you. I hope it helps you rethink the gluten in your world. And if you need more help, please don't hesitate to reach out. I have so many resources related to this, including a holiday recipe guide that's gluten free as well as dairy free, sugar free and egg free. It's possible to completely enjoy the holidays and your favorite recipes without having gluten or these other things in there. Absolutely. I encourage you to give it a try. Play the game with me. I always think of this as a game. Play the game, try it out and see for yourself how you feel. The best way to know is avoid gluten and find out how you feel. That's why I designed the 21 day stress remedy program. It's 21 days to avoid gluten and see how you feel. And in the process, you start balancing your blood sugar healing like leaky gut restoring your microbiome and so much more, your nutrients and all the things reversing all the things I just talked about. So I'll put a link to the stress remedy program down below as well as my 14 day detox, which is the perfect thing. If you're like, I just, you're feeling bloated and brain fog and fatigue and anxious and low mood and blah. And you're like, what am I gonna do now? Okay, I would say do my 14 day detox because in 14 days you're gonna reset, recalibrate, get that gluten out, rebalance your blood sugar and get yourself on a really good routine and start over to be able to get a restart on your relationship with your body and your relationship with your health. So I'll put a link to the 14 day detox down below as well and just know that it's absolutely possible. And I know it's sometimes hard to think about, but believe me, once you do it and you go down this path, I have a feeling you're going to be. Look, look back and feel grateful. You're going to look back and be like, that was one of the best things I ever did. I. I'm so glad I took the opportunity to kick gluten out of my life and embrace all the other food options that are available to us as humans that have way more benefit without the risk. Why? It's like to me, eating gluten is like driving a car without putting your seatbelt on, right? We know that wearing a seatbelt helps save your life, helps protect you when you're driving. To me, avoiding gluten is that level of protecting yourself. Avoiding gluten is like wearing a seatbelt and saying, I'm not willing to put myself at risk of these seven things that I just covered, actually ate. I'm not willing to put myself in that kind of risk. We need to be putting, making ourselves realize that we're more important than that. I want to protect myself and my health from now and the future. And if you start to get that empowered about your own health and your own body, you realize it's not worth it to put yourself in danger like that. It's really danger. And it, and it makes you think because it tastes good and it comes with sugar, it makes you think, then it's okay and it is good for you. But it's very only thing is a temporary yummy taste when you put it in your mouth. And from then on it's, it's working against you. So I hope this helps you clarify and and choose for yourself about whether avoiding gluten could be a chance to pivot and a chance to protect yourself from high risk HPV and cancer and all the other health issues that I mentioned.
