#34 Saying Goodbye to HPV with Dr. Doni!
9 Nov 2020 · 25 min
Podcast episode (#34) by Dr. Doni Wilson (published Nov 9, 2020). Dr. Doni describes her personal experience discovering HPV at age 20, her training as a midwife and naturopathic physician, and two decades of clinical work helping women reverse abnormal Pap smears and achieve HPV-negative status using a stress-recovery protocol and naturopathic methods (diet, gut healing, hormones, nutrients, herbs, testing, genetics-informed care). She emphasizes that HPV exposure is common, only ~10% develop abnormal cells, and that stress and related factors (gut health, toxins, hormones, smoking, medications) increase susceptibility. She offers a free guide, a six-week online course, and one-on-one care and gives clinical anecdotes (including a cited case converting CIN3 HPV+ to negative in ~8 weeks).

Hi, I want to talk to you today about hpv, human papilloma virus, and I want to share about how HPV affected my life and inspired me to do what I do and how I help patients with hpv. Also, it turns out that HPV has been a major focus of my work and practice over the past 20 years and even part of my training before that. So it's one of these viruses that has played a major role in what I do and in my life, in my career. And I didn't plan it that way. It just turned out that way. It so happens that I was so inspired by my experience with HPV that I wanted to study with women's health. I followed obgyns and midwives and decided to become a midwife myself. I chose to do internships in Women's Health where I learned how to help women who are dealing with HPV and abnormal Pap smears and to learn how to help them to reverse those abnormal cells and to get HPV to negative. And I've been doing that ever since because that's something I was trained in, which is very unique. And part of my training was with Dr. Tori Hudson, who is a naturopathic physician in Portland, Oregon. She trained me. And so when I came out to the East Coast, I was one of the only people who was trained by her. And it gave me the opportunity to work with hundreds, and now thousands of women with HPV and abnormal Pap smears. The thing I learned from these women is, and their partners, I should say, is that it's possible to reverse an abnormal Pap smear. It's possible to get HPV to negative and to keep it that way. I wouldn't necessarily believe it myself if I hadn't seen it over and over all the time. We get messages in my office from patients and people who write in and say how they got their latest Pap smear or their latest colposcopy and their abnormal cells are gone and the HPV is gone. And so when you see that enough times, you start to realize this is possible, this works. And, or if someone didn't go all the way to negative, we would fine tune it and figure out what did we need to do different to get it to work. And through that process, over years, case after case, I put together the pieces and the protocol that works most often for most patients. And people ask me all the time, how likely is this going to work? And what I say to them is it's really a matter of time and implementing on their part. Some of my patients have resolved their abnormal Pap smear and HPV within. I would say the shortest one that I know about was it within eight weeks that a patient went from a CIN3 with HPV to completely negative in eight weeks. Her oncologist was completely blown away because this is not something that happens in conventional medical care. They don't even try to address the virus. They just try to cut out or laser off the abnormal cells. But that doesn't mean it stops the virus. How many women have I talked to even in the past week who had a LEEP procedure or a cone biopsy, which is when they removed part of the cerVix and within 12 months it's back again. So they're having to go through this process over and over. It's like a merry go round. You can't get off, like a nightmare that keeps repeating and you feel like you can't get out of it. You can expect that the conventional medicine is going to have answers for you because it's just not what they've implemented in their standard of care. It involves dietary changes, nutrients, herbs, healing your gut, healing your adrenals, recovering from stress. These are not things that conventional medicine specializes in. They specialize in pharmaceuticals and medical procedures. And thank goodness, because if abnormal cells do present or cancer cells, we need conventional medicine to help remove those cancer cells. But what if you could address the virus and prevent the abnormal cells or the cancer cells ahead of time? That's why I think Pap smears are so important, is because then we can identify it early and we can do something about it.
I've created, well, there's a free guide you can download. I can share a link to that. There's a online course you can sign up for and has six weeks worth of videos and trainings of my protocol, my successful protocol for helping women to reverse this. And then there's also working with me one on one, where we can be most individualized and comprehensive to address the abnormal Pap smears and HPV for you. But the thing I want, there's A couple of things I want to set straight, so to speak, to clarify, because I know the information's not out there and I know it's scary and confusing and overwhelming to feel on your own with something that's considered to have a stigma associated with it. And you feel like this is going to affect your life in various ways and you just want it to be out of your life. Right? This is what women tell me all the time. And I get it because I've been there too.
So.
One thing is HPV virus is super common. It's not some rare thing that you get just from.
You know, risky sexual activity or, you know, that's not how this virus happens. It's one out of every two of us will have had HPV in our lifetime. Almost all of us has been exposed to hpv. So it's not about being exposed to the virus. It's about.
What makes you susceptible to the virus. Because this virus can be hanging out for years and it may never be an issue unless you become susceptible to the virus at some point in time. And what makes you susceptible to this virus is the next question. Because only 10% of women who have HPV will ever have abnormal cells develop. So what puts you in that 10% is the real question. And the way that I've thought this through and observed it in my patients is the thing that makes us vulnerable to being in the 10%, they get abnormal cells. The best way to think about it is it's stress in various forms. It could be emotional stress, like for example, a job that's stressful, a relationship or breakup of a relationship that's stressful. It could be moving across the country or death in the family. It could just be day to day stresses and not having enough of a chance to take a break and recover. Any form of emotional stress, sometimes that's combined with physical stress, like an injury, a procedure, a surgery, an infection.
Or like multiple infections. Sometimes patients have multiple vaginal infections. Or it could be stress just from, say, menopause, when the hormones are shifting and the estrogen lower. It can be stress from toxin exposure or even chemicals or medications. We know that synthetic hormones like in a birth control pill increase susceptibility to developing abnormal cells. Same thing with other medications or other chemicals like pesticides and personal care products that have chemicals in them. Also, cigarette smoke is known to increase the risk of abnormal cells. Talk about more toxins and metals exposure, right? So you start to see, hey, where's all the stress coming from? My body. Is it a stressful food. A lot of times it's, you know, that maybe your diet hasn't been as healthy as it usually was. We want to identify what are the foods that are stressful for your body and help you eliminate those foods. Heal your digestion, something called leaky gut. Leaky gut is when the intestinal cells are not as healthy as they could be and should be. That happens when we're stressed. When we're under stress or we're exposed to stressful foods, or we're exposed to pesticides. The cells in the intestine become not as healthy as they could be. They become damaged. And when those intestinal cells are damaged, it allows foods to leak through and trigger the immune system. Foods like gluten, dairy, eggs. Once the foods get triggered, it's triggering inflammation through your whole body, including your cervix. This leaves you vulnerable to hpv. We have to heal the leaky gut in order to heal your cervix. And this is something I've seen over and over. I'm going to get this research into actual numbers for you. But what I find over and over is it is very common to have gluten sensitivity and leaky gut along with HPV and abnormal Pap smear. So that means to me we need to eliminate the gluten. At the very least, identify any other foods that are involved. Heal the leaky gut, which I happen to specialize in and have articles and courses and support for healing leaky gut. Even if you don't have digestive symptoms, you probably have leaky gut because leaky gut is caused by stress and so is hpv.
Something a lot of people don't know is that too much stress can actually create an abundance of health problems like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, anxiety, migraines, insomnia, even fertility issues. This is because high stress puts your adrenal glands on overload. They release cortisol and adrenaline which controls your digestion, hormones, immune system energy, focus and even your emotional response. So how can you beat stress when you don't know where to start? That's why we have a free seven day stress reset program. It's designed to help support weight loss, digestive healing and hormone balancing. It includes support for integrating self care. Daily tips come to you by email and video. Gluten free dairy free meal plans as well as grocery shopping lists, journal pages and more. This free program will help you beat stress and put you on the path to wholeness in your body. Also need to look at your cortisol and adrenaline, of course, because cortisol and adrenaline are affected by stress. The thing is, is that we all assume that that means our cortisol is going to be high, but it doesn't necessarily mean that each of us is unique in terms of the way we respond to stress. You might have high cortisol at certain times of day, low cortisol at certain times of day. We need to find out. So we need to test your cortisol levels at different times a day, test your adrenaline, test your neurotransmitters as well, which has to do with serotonin, which is made in the gut, Gaba, which comes from the gut bacteria. You see how it comes back to the gut again. So we need to do these tests and find out how your body's been thrown off track. And so we know exactly what your body needs to get back on track. Heal your digestion, rebalance your hormones, rebalance your neurotransmitters, rebalance your immune system so it can protect you from this virus. When it comes to hormones, there's also estrogen and progesterone, which are also playing a key role here. For women who are menstruating, sometimes it's that there's not enough progesterone or the liver is not detoxifying the estrogen effectively enough. We can do tests to find that out for you. What, what's happening in your ovaries and your liver related to estrogen. And so we can use specific approaches, herbs and nutrients to help it get back on track. All of this is influenced by your genetics, of course. There's genetics related to how your liver detoxifies estrogen. There's genetics related to how your body uses certain nutrients like folate. A common gene there is called mthfr, but there's other genes too, mtrr, comt, mao. These all have an influence on how your body processes hormones, neurotransmitters and even to do with your gut health and your immune system. We can look at the genetics and we can then give your body what it needs in order to detour around any genetic roadblocks, so to speak, to understand that the thing that turns on our genetic predispositions is stress. It keeps coming back to stress as a factor, as a determining factor. Which is why for me, addressing HPV and preventing cervical cancer has everything to do with helping you to understand how stress affects you, helping you to create a self care plan so that you can.
Not only recover from the stress you've been exposed to turn off these genetic susceptibilities, but become resilient to stress going forward. You don't have to be susceptible to HPV. You can get into the 90% where it's causing no problem and it can stay that way. By the way, my patients, once they get HPV to negative, it doesn't come back again. Very rarely and only if their stress is increases and it allows the virus to turn back on again. Most times, once people learn how to recover from stress and become resilient to stress, the virus leaves you alone. It's not able to cause abnormal cells and the other issues that it can cause. It's not able to do that when your body's balanced and your system's working and your hormones and your neurotransmitters and your digestion, your stress response system are working in a balance and working for you and not against you. So that's what I do. That's what I do when I work with people in a group on a course, one on one.
We can understand science and we can understand what your body needs. And we can use natural approaches, everything from diet, sleep, exercise, stress reducing activities like meditation, to nutrients, herbs, and homeopathic remedies and even peptides to help reset your system. I wish, almost like if you could push the reset button on your device, on your computer, your phone, we can hit the reset button, your body can get back to optimal genetic expression, optimal functioning, and this virus is not going to have a chance. HPV loves it when we are stressed. When we are stressed, it is as happy as can be. It is like, yay, I can have a party now because she is stressed. So by knowing that, you can start to make choices in the opposite direction. You can go, what do I do I need a break? Do I need to redo my schedule? Do I need to communicate with my loved ones that something needs to shift? Do I need to do some tests to find out what's out of balance and work on rebalancing it? Prioritize you and understand your body and this is the body you live in. There's nothing wrong with your body. You have a human body that, that it's responding to stress, it's doing what it thinks it should do, it's trying to protect you from this virus. But what happens is when your body's overwhelmed by stress, it's not able to prevent this virus from causing abnormal cells. So we're not trying to get the virus out of your life and out of your world. We're just trying to get your body able to protect you from this virus, which is why you don't have to even stop being exposed. You don't have to stop. Stop having sex. You don't have to, you know, change sexual partners. You don't have to be afraid of all of that. If you just start to take to accept this is your body and this is what kind of support it needs. Give your body what it needs and it'll protect you.
I'm going to be sharing my story about with HPV so that you can really connect with why I do what I do and why I feel so passionate about it and why I want to help change the view of hpv. I don't think women should be feeling shame or embarrassment or fear about hpv. I think women should be feeling empowered. And that's how my patients end up feeling when they work with me, because they start to realize that this is something you can do something about. It's not something that happened to you. It's something that happened because the environment allowed it. And you can do something about that. And that's a huge difference. And.
All of us are exposed to hpv. It's not just you. It happens to be you and many other people who probably aren't saying that they haven't. If nobody talks about it, how's anybody going to know that anyone else is dealing with the same thing? So I encourage you to start talking about it. Let's change this view of hpv. Let's realize that this is something we can do something about. And let's prevent cervical cancer from ever happening by becoming a healthier you and giving your body what it needs.
Please join me in that mission. Please let me know if you have questions. I'm happy to talk with you about your case and what I would suggest for you. Please just reach out to me and my office. I'd be happy to set up a time to talk with you and find a way for you to get the help you need to change this and shift this so you can actually be doing things in your life you want to be doing and not spending all this time dealing with abnormal pap smears and hpv, because it doesn't have to be. This can shift, and my patients have proven it to me. And I want that for you, too. Here's the video where I describe how HPV affected me in my life and how it inspired me to help many other women to say goodbye to HPV and prevent it from causing abnormal pap smears. When I was 20 years old, I got a letter from the gynecologist's office saying that my Pap smear was abnormal and I needed to go back in for another appointment. I remember feeling terrified that day. As I went into the doctor's office, it felt like everyone in the waiting room was looking at me. When the doctor came in, she explained that she found hpv. But then she was gone before I knew it. Before I could ask any questions, I felt so confused and alone and afraid of what to do and what this meant, and I wanted to know more. So I asked a family friend who's a gynecologist if I could observe in his practice, and he said yes. That's when I observed surgeries like cesareans, hysterectomies, and laparoscopies. Standing in the cold, bright operating room, I remember thinking, am I going to be next? You see, I had also experienced severe menstrual cramps and migraines, and I had tried a birth control pill. But I got severe bruising, and the doctor told me I had to stop. So I felt alone with the pain and wondering and thinking there had to be something else I could do. One day in the doctor's office, I noticed this sign that said midwives. And I asked him, what's a midwife? He said, oh, you have to meet the midwives. They are great. Around that time, I also signed up for a nutrition course in college. And I said to a friend of mine, I wonder if there is a kind of medicine that involves nutrition. She said to me, what about naturopathic medicine? As if I should have known about that. The day after I graduated from college, I got in my car and I drove 300 miles to the naturopathic medical school that she mentioned to me. I walked in and I said, I'm looking for a medical school that teaches nutrition. The admissions director looked at me with these excited eyes and said, you are in the right place. That is how I became a midwife and naturopathic doctor. There I learned that by giving our bodies the right support, our bodies can heal. I did extra training to learn how to help women to reverse abnormal Pap smears using nutrition, nutrients and herbs. Now it's been 20 years, and I've helped thousands of women to reverse their abnormal Pap smears. But not only that, I've helped them to get HPV to negative. That's not even something conventional medicine aims for. You see, they follow the Pap smear to see if abnormal cells develop, and then if they do they do a procedure or surgery to remove the abnormal cells. I get phone calls from women around the world every day asking me for help with HPV to prevent it from causing abnormal cells or oral or genital cancer. It strikes me the fear and shame that they feel. It reminds me of what I felt way back when, when I first found out about having hpv. The thing is that these women are led to believe that HPV is due to high risk sexual activity, which is completely wrong. The fact is that most all of us have had HPV at some point in our lives. It's not about the virus, it's about the percentages. Only 10% of people with HPV ever develop abnormal cells. So the question is, what is it about that 10% that makes them susceptible? And the answer is stress. What my patients have shown me is that when I help them to recover from stress, they're able to turn their abnormal Pap smears back to normal and get HPV to negative.
I want you to know that this is possible. I think it's enough of women feeling afraid of hpv, living their lives, waiting for this next Pap smear, hoping that it doesn't progress to worsening cells. My patients have proven it's possible to reverse abnormal cells and to get HPV to negative. I want that for you too. I don't want you to feel what I felt. I can be your guide.
