Dr. Gary Sanchez explains the difference between short-term motivations (e.g., working out to fit into a dress for a specific event) and a deeper, lifelong "why" that guides what you do across contexts. He argues that knowing this enduring why reveals your passion, maximizes your value, and is essential to truly knowing yourself.

Are there different types of whys? When I speak at events, invariably I'll say something like when you know your why, what you do has more impact. Then I'll hear somebody say yes, I agree with you, in fact I know my why. So I'll say that's great, what's your why? They'll pull out their phone and show me a picture of like a little red dress or something and say hey, I've got to get into this dress for a wedding in six months and that's why I work out the way that I work out. What they're talking about is short term motivation to keep them going. What we're talking about is the why behind everything you do. It's why you do what you do everywhere you are. It is where you find your passion and where you bring the most value. Knowing your why is the first step in you knowing you and it will stay with you your entire life.
