Hello and welcome to why Not Wednesday. We are here with our friend all the way from the uk, all the way across the pond. We have Hayden Bratt with us today. Welcome, Hayden. Brad, let me tell you a little bit about Hayden. He is a business design specialist who is committed to helping driven female entrepreneurs find a better way to run their business and reduce overwhelm. He is a YOS certified coach and he wants to help you discover how you can turn your big ambition into reality, using your why to create an empowering mind and a brilliantly successful business. Did I get all that right? Hayden?
That was perfect. Dan, great to be here with you. Really looking forward to spending some time with you tonight. My time. Afternoon. Your time.
That's right. We have to say good morning for the folks on the west coast. So good. Good afternoon for the folks on the east coast in the US and then good evening to those in Europe. And. And we have people, you know, we have coaches all over the world. And it's so cool to have you here, Hayden, because you were one of our first international coaches. You discovered your why way back. I say way back because it's been so long ago, in June of 2020, discovered your why and then you became our first associate Y coach in the UK and soon after that became a full fledged YOS certified coach. So we've got some history. You've been on the air with us a few times. So thank you for all your support.
Hey, it's been great. I fell in love with the Y and what you're doing at the Y Institute the first time I met Gary and your have been a great supporter ever since. So, yeah, really, really exciting. It's such a great tool. So, yeah, looking forward, let's tell a.
Little bit about how, how you operate Hayden. So Hayden's why is to find a better way. So he believes that success begins when we find a better way to do things and we share it with the world. How he does that is by making sense of and solving complex and challenging problems. And what he brings are out of the box solutions that challenge the status quo. So Hayden, as a better way person, you believe there's a better way. I got this from your website. Says I believe that happiness and fulfillment that we all desire is available when we discover how to develop our mindset and build the confidence to be our best selves. You believe that the only thing holding us back is the limits that we define for ourselves. Wow, that's strong. What does that mean?
What does that actually mean? So for me, this the My business is called Mindset or Mindset Leadership. That's my business name. So for me, everything around.
Our success and our fulfillment in life starts with the way that we think and if we want to. And I believe, therefore, every opportunity is open for us because when we change the way we think, we open ourselves to new opportunities. So what are a lot of the work that I do with my clients and people I support is to help them to modify their thinking through giving them some really practical mindset techniques that they can use that adjust that thinking and open up to all those opportunities so they can become their best self. So a lot of us are held back by what we call limiting beliefs, and those are programmed in from a really young age. So we can help to kind of reframe some of that and help people to think differently, which facilitates their ability to lead a better life. And I, because my why is better way, but all through my history, I've always thought, actually there's got to be an alternative, there's got to be a better way we can do this. So I try and help people to be their best self.
Yeah. So as mindset, I can tell you, you know, a lot of the comments once, once from the time I posted that we were going to be interviewing, you were around mindset. A lot of people are interested in the power of mindset. So that's a great explanation. How does the yos fit into that? Because I know it's part of your five day business challenge, Kaden. So you're going to help people discover their why, and some people will go on to discover their yos. So tell me how that integrates or how you've integrated that.
Yeah. So if you think around our minds and we think about that term, mindset, it is a, it's a way of thinking. And that way of thinking is often driven from our subconscious. Where our values live, where our beliefs live, where our fears live, but also where our purpose lives. When we can connect with our cause or our purpose or our why, then it helps us to really ground ourselves in what really matters and what's important. I know you guys talk about the why. When you know your why, it connects to your passion. And so when we are grounded in that sense of understanding what our why is, that's a great place to root from as we start to then shape the thinking. Because often and I talk about overcoming your ninja, and often when we are overcoming some of those fears and some of those barriers, the route to help us to do that is through connecting to your why. So that's the reason why we start and we integrate the why Discovery tool with all of our clients who we start and support through the framework that we use. Because. Knowing your why. And actually the first part of our framework is called the why factor. Part of that is understanding your own personal why. Part of it's understanding kind of your customers and why they use you. And part of it's around kind of how you'll stay relevant in the future. But it starts with.
That, that understanding of your own purpose and your, your real core.
So one of the things I've heard recently and we're working with, you know, with a lot of coaches that do different things we've heard about, you know, your why leads to purpose, which then leads to the impact that you're going to make. Right. And, and so I can see how you're taking people through that mindset. So you're taking that first step figuring, okay, why do you do what you do, how do you do it, what do you bring? And then building that framework around it. I love the way you've done that, Hayden, and I know people are going to get a lot out of your five day business challenge. I've got a quote from your website that I want to read to you and I want to get your thoughts. It says being an entrepreneur can be hard. I know because I am one. I've been running a successful coaching business now for the past eight years. And that time I've learned so much. While I've achieved a lot, it's not been easy. And I too have been racked with self doubt and have been deafened by the sounds of my own inner ninja. I've learned how to become a ninja warrior. I want to share that with you. So I want to know, how are you? How, how can we become ninja warriors? This was a post I put telling people about this.
All right, Hayden, I think the ninja.
Warrior is a part of. I'm not sure if we're still, still going. So I'll talk into it and hopefully it's connected.
We are working.
When I describe the inner ninja, I think around this, the inner critic, this inner voice who is there chirping away, an English phrase, chirping away in your ear, this voice that's in the back of your mind. And the reason why I say they are ninjas is because they love to hide in the shadows. On a normal day, you don't hear the voice when you're doing something that's normal, that you've done before a hundred times.
The voice Isn't there? It only comes out in those moments when we're trying to do something new and different, or we're trying to push ourselves forward, take ourselves out of our comfort zone, aiming to go for a big goal or something that we really want to strive towards. And then all of a sudden, these little ninjas come out of the dark shadows of our mind, leap out and put a sword straight through the heart of our dreams and our ambitions, and we retreat back. We retreat back to safety because all of a sudden we become fearful of what's happening. So, so I call them the ninjas because they love to hide in the shadows. And that's the reason why I use that term. And for me, the whole thing, and this is something I face into myself. And I think, you know, we talk a lot about imposter syndrome, right? And I think every entrepreneur on the planet has moments of self doubt, have moments where they question themselves. And, and it's that ability to understand and listen to those questions that you're asking yourself, but then to push through and to not allow the ninjas to take over and not allow the ninjas to, to restrict you from taking those actions. And that's what I mean by about being a, a ninja warrior because it helps us to fight off those ninjas. And for me, the best defense against the ninjas is your why. Because when you're tuned into your purpose, when you really know that you are following a cause. For me, it's about helping people find better ways. When I know I'm doing that, no matter what my inner voice is saying, I have the strength to push through and still do it and still show up. Because I know why, why I'm doing it. And that's the bit that I say, why the why is your best defense against the, the ninja warriors that are out there or to become a ninja warrior is because it helps you to have that shield to defense or to fight off the attacks from, from, from those, those nasty little voices that hold us back.
Well, you said a lot and the comments are just streaming in. Everybody is, is commenting on that. Because that was so powerful, what you just shared with us. You know, the first of all, Watson, great insight and vulnerability. Steph McPhee, the ninja is always there waiting for their opportunity. And I think what you do, Hayden, so well is you help people be prepared and be able to fight those ninjas. So, and then Anza, good bar. She said frameworks are so necessary for sure. And, and we're talking to somebody with the what of right way There. So I know that we're getting a lot of response to the comments that you've made. So Hayden, what are the most, the four main challenges that most business owners are struggling with that, that you deal with as you work with them?
Yeah. So typically in the work that I've done with my clients that I work with, these four things show up consistently and really there I'm actually going to share with you four secrets that are relate that stem from the four challenges. The first secret is busyness is not good for business. That's secret number one. Busyness is not good for business because when a lot of business owners, and I was this person as well, so this has all come from my experience as well, is I used to feel if I could fill my day with activity, I was making progress.
Right.
If I could be busy all day, then that meant I was making progress and I was doing good things. But we all know Pareto's rule, the 8020. We all know that if we just fill our day when we come consumed, we can't then focus on the things that really matter. So one of the challenges I find that business owners come to me with is they are so maxed out and overwhelmed with how much stuff they are doing or trying to do in their business that they, they're not able to focus on the things that really matter, that make a big difference. And so the work that we do with them is to help them to really understand what is that 20% of the activity that delivers 80% of your returns. So you can really focus on that, that ability.
Excellent. So that's the first secret.
Yeah. Second secret is, and this is a, this is a fact based in the UK and I'm sure it'd be fairly similar in the US as well. But 70 of self employed people own a job, not a business.
Because 75 of the people who run businesses are actually solo individuals within there and they, and they do what I, what I call running, owning a job, which means they are selling time for money.
Right.
So you're in that position where you're selling time for money. You're not actually running a business, you are running a job. And when you are running a job, you don't then really benefit from the freedoms that being an entrepreneur give you. Right. And so one of the challenges I find that people come to me with is they have this aspiration of building a life around their dream that they really want to live. And my business challenge that I run, the business design challenge is all about designing your, your business around the life you really want to live. So these people set out and creating their business with a desire and an ambition to live a certain lifestyle.
They.
Thought was going to be facilitated through becoming self employed.
Right?
Getting trapped in their business because they are they, what they've done is they created a job for themselves rather than a business. So we help them to understand the difference between running a, owning a business and owning a job and how they can move and transition that place from selling time for money to creating a business that actually generates them income without them needing to be ever present in, in that business. Because when you own a job, it means you can't ever have a day off. You're having to work to the demands of your clients. It feels like you're working for several businesses rather than just one because you're facilitating what's happened. So that's, that's the second big challenge for, for the clients that come to us. And therefore the second secret, the third secret is if you can sell to one person, you can sell to as many as you like. So the third challenge that we have that people come is they are struggling with marketing. They're struggling with how to promote their business. They feel like they're not natural salespeople. They don't probably like the sales process. They maybe feel uncomfortable with advocating their own strengths or advocating their own value and really, really struggle with that conversation that says what do you, what do you contribute? What do you make a difference to people? And we help them to really focus in on how if you can sell the first, if you can sell your product, the first person you sold to is always the hardest because once you've done it once you can just repeat that. And we try to. A lot of my clients try and over complicate this whole marketing process and get really confused by all the different methodologies that are out there for, for getting your products out to, to, to your clients and, and we get them again to really kind of, again, it's my make sense side of things. I want to help them to understand if you sold one, you can sell more. How did you go about selling the first? Let's do more of that rather than trying to make it overly complicated. So I really try and simplify some of those solutions down and challenge people to think differently about the way that they go about marketing their business. So that's the third challenge is how do I get more clients in? Which is a, a common challenge for most business owners is just how do I sell myself more effectively without feeling like a Salesperson because obviously the connotation of that salesperson methodology. So with a lot of business owners, I take that fear away from them and help them with simple strategies to take that one sale and multiply it out.
I've lost audio there.
There we go. You're talking to the chief growth officer at Y Institute. So I'm always talking about sales and I love that, that point you just made about you make one sale, you can make many. Right. You can duplicate that. And so love that you help people do that. What's the fourth secret, Hayden?
Yeah, the fourth secret is actually it comes back to what we were talking about with the inner ninja, which is your why is the best defense against your inner ninja? Because the other challenge that a lot of business owners come to me with is, is they're racked by self doubt. They, they know they do a good job and yet they still feel like the imposter or they still feel like a person who doesn't belong in this world of running your own business. And we help all of those business owners with those mindset techniques that help them to connect to their why, overcome self doubt and step out with confidence to be able to deliver their business effectively.
Well, and, and there's another one that you gave us earlier, Hayden, where you were talking about owning a job versus owning a business. And I know we've got Cheryl from Austin, Texas who is an entrepreneur. She was in medical device sales for a long time and, and left that job to start her own business. And I bet she could probably identify with that a lot because you get, like you said, you are much busier as an entrepreneur than you ever were when you were working a job for someone else. Because now you've got a ton of bosses instead of just one, right?
100%. Yeah, absolutely. We become conditioned by what our clients need from us and demand from us rather than where we believe we're going to be, which is like we have freedom to do what we want. One of the things I love to provide people in their business is that freedom to choose. But we can only do that when we start to run a business, not, not run a job.
And you know, one of the things that, that brought to my mind was you're, you talked about busyness is not business. The other thing is you're not running the business. The business is running you. If you don't have those priorities.
Absolutely, yeah. You, you are directed by factors outside of yourself and it doesn't give you that sense of being in control. And that's why so Many come to me who are frazzled, overwhelmed, overworked. They set up their business because they want to spend more time with their family or to, to provide a better quality of life and balance of life. And yet they end up working 70, 80 hours a week fulfilling their clients demands and they're, they're kind of at their wit's end and they need that help to get back in control and understand that there is a better way to run a business. And that's what I help people to, to identify.
Well, I love that you came back, you came back to your why, right? So always.
Yeah.
You discovered your why in June of 2020. Tell me what's the biggest impact that that had on you? Knowing your why a better way or how it makes sense and your what of challenge. What's the biggest impact that had on you or your business?
Both actually, because it's really give me a narrative to describe what I do. So previous to meeting yourself and Gary, I'd spent many years around this concept of purpose.
Right.
And I've never quite got the right language to describe my purpose. I knew it was about helping people, I knew it's about improving things. That's why I kind of went into coaching. I knew I had a passion for business. I knew I had, I looked at things in an innovative way and I wanted to, to change things and, and do things differently. But I never had the narrative to describe why that was the case. So what it gave me was this really clear narrative. And when I go out now and talk to people about what is it that you do and why is it that you do think, do what you do, I instantly can just go to. It's because there is a better way and I want to help you and help you to discover that better way and I want to share it with you. So that's that, that driving point. And then when I did the full yos understanding that actually what I do is make sense because people come to and they love, I love to listen, I love to sit and take in what people are saying and I can instantly shape their thoughts and it's, it's because I make sense for them, right. So how I do it, I make sense for them. And they, they come away and they just say you just made. Everything kind of makes sense for me. It's really clear now. And I've always had that ability, I've always had that knack to be able to listen to people kind of understand what they're trying to say and then replay it back to me. In a way that just seems to make sense. And they go, yeah, that's it. That's. That's what I do. So it's really helped me to shape that. And of course, from a business perspective, it's helped me to market what I do better. It's helped me to use language more powerfully and have greater impact because I am always talking from my passion, from my. From my why. As a start point.
Has that helped. Has that helped you find more client. More ideal clients? You know, for us at Y Institute, we're looking for people who are looking for a better way, for looking for a clear solution, who are looking for a simple way of discovering their why. So that's our ideal client. Are your ideal clients looking for a better way and looking to make sense of the complex and a different type of. Different kind of solution?
Yeah. So people come to me because they absolutely know that they need to find a better solution, a better way. So they come to me for that. They then find out that I'm able to make sense of things for them. So they like the fact that I can sort things out and order it for them. And of course, what they also like is the fact that I challenge. And one of my absolute beliefs as a coach is if you're not being challenged, you're not being coached. So I love the ability to turn things from different perspectives and get people to reframe things, get them to.
Question why they're thinking the way they're thinking or where is that coming from? So that challenge that comes with the way that I work with them, they enjoy that. And the comment I get most from my clients, and I take this as a good thing, I think is they say it's like you're. You're running around in my head when I'm out there doing my business. You're kind of sitting in the back and I'm joined the ninjas. But I'm being a kind of positive, positive light against the ninjas in their heads that saying, actually, is this the right thing to be doing right now? And is there a better way that you could be. Could be thinking right now? So they carry me around with them, which I think is. Yeah, I take that as a nice. A nice comment rather than a negative thing.
That's a good coach. Right? You're there when they need you, even if you're not there physically.
Yeah, absolutely.
I like that a lot. So let me ask you this question because it's important you talk about it on your. On your webpage for your Business challenge. But how did you arrive at focusing on helping driven female entrepreneurs find a better way to run their business? That's a very specific demographic. You're going.
Yeah, it is. And, and there's a couple of reasons why. So a little bit of background on me. So my parents divorced when I was about 11, so I grew up in a household with my mom and my two older sisters. So I've always been around female company and I've always had an affinity with, with, with, with females and always had lots of female friends. So I've always had this kind of connection. And then from a business perspective, we know there are still massive gender imbalances in the world. We, we know that there isn't a level playing field for, for men and women still in, even in 2022 as we are now, it's still not a balanced playing field yet. We know that females make up 50 of the population and therefore I think there is a massive potential that is yet to be realized in females, female leaders and particularly female business leaders because they haven't had, they haven't yet had a fair run of the run of the green, as we might use that phrase here in, in the UK And I believe that they have so much potential. And one of my passions is I want to be part of the solution to that gender imbalance rather than part of the problem. So that's why I'm really drawn to helping female entrepreneurs in particular to support them because I just believe there is so much potential out there in, in having more female leaders running great businesses who are making a positive impact on the world and the planet and are creating great leadership cultures that drive people or give people the chance to really love what they do. Because that's my other passion is to help people just love what they do every day. So that's why I've been drawn towards female entrepreneurs in particular.
Fantastic. You know, I want to make sure because we're, we're getting close to our end time, I want to talk about your free five day business challenge. It's coming up on January 24th. You're going to use the why discovery is a big part of the program. What can someone expect to get out of that five day business challenge?
Hayden so the, the main thing they're going to get is each day we give you a task that helps you to look at your business from a different angle and we look at all of the challenges that I've shared today already. We look at each of those and we give you some very simple first steps. That you can apply within your business. So it's completely free to sign up at the end of the week, you will be several steps forward. In fact, most people are about six months further forward in their business, planning on the back of five days than they would be if they didn't come and do the challenge. It gives you a chance. Melanie I know is listening in. She said, it's a little bit like having a service or an MOT on your car. It gives you a really good chance to just check the health of your business by using the task to understand it and that's what you'll walk away with. So if you ask me what's the tangible benefit from the challenge, people walk away with absolute clarity about the next steps they need to take to improve and to, to develop their business and to take their business to the next level. And of course there is an opportunity to continue working with me. People choose to do that. But if people just come along for the challenge, then they will walk away with greater clarity and say those next steps that they need to take. Specifically around the four challenge areas that we've talked about, plus the fifth one that we work on is those kind of limiting beliefs and just not holding yourself back from what you could achieve. So that's take away.
And we got. You got a fan in one of our viewers, Melanie Aches says it is awesome. So we want to make sure, sure we put the link. How do you sign up? Bella, I think, is going to put the link in, in the chat and you can go on there and register. I know in every post I. I put, I wanted to make sure people knew how to get there. And then there's your website business designmastermind.co.uk so if you're interested in participating in that, that's. Is that going to be live? Is it going to be recorded?
So it's each morning the tasks go out. So it's completely flexible. So I'm based here in the UK, it goes out at 6am UK time, which means it comes out around about 10, 10pm Your time the day before. But you can have. It's completely flexible, so you can do it at any time during your working day. So there's a task that comes out with a video and then I'm live every evening in the UK at 8pm, which I guess would be 12 noon.
Standard time. So at 12 noon I'm then live for an hour at least every day, answering questions from people within the actual challenge. So if you've got a question about your Business, you can ask it and then I'll answer it live, give you the best advice that I possibly can. So if nothing else, you're going to get five days of completely free high level business coaching which is, can't say fairer than that. It's great offer so I'd love people to come and join me.
Fantastic. So let's talk. We've got a couple more minutes. What's your biggest why not moments? The name of the show but we like to leave it towards the end. What's your biggest why not moment? Personally and then professionally, Hayden?
So personally I think it was giving up my corporate job.
Yeah.
Because it was a big step to step out of the, the safety of the corporate world and to go into the entrepreneurial world. And it really was. I, I kind of had this view and it was something I'd been thinking about for a while but I kind of not done because I was having that self doubt. Am I going to be good enough? Am I going to be able to make it? So I just got to point and said, why, why not? Let's just do this. What's the worst that can happen? And I took the leap. So that's on a personal is definitely the biggest why not that I've done on a professional level. I think it was actually coming and joining the why Institute guys and doing your first why program because actually I've been scrabbling around and David introduced me and I just thought, listen, I need something else. It was at time of the pandemic. We just kicked off. Things were pretty business at that time. I needed something that could help me to communicate in a better way. So why not come and join Gary and Dan and the team and to take my. Take my why and start the journey that I have and I've loved every second of it.
Well, you not only took the why, you became one of our coaches you're using as part of your business coaching, your mindset coaching. What would you say, Hayden, to someone who is contemplating becoming YOS certified and adding this tool to their tool belt as a coach and they're kind of hesitant. What would you say to someone who has some questions and they came to you and said should I do it?
Yeah. So my first response would absolutely do it. Join, take, take the step. You will not look back. It is there are so many applications for it. That's, that's the thing I found the most is there are so many applications for it. So whether I'm working with a business owner who's looking at Whether I'm working in corporates because of some of my clients from corporate businesses and they want to become more effective teams, then I've used it in that environment. So there are so many different applications. And the big thing I found as a coach is it helps you to shortcut that whole conversation about understanding your why because you get the language and the narrative really quickly and then you can start working on how to make an impact with it, which is what really matters. So that's what I would say to people.
All right, well, we are going to finish right on time. I know Bella is going to be so proud of us because we didn't go over any last words you. You want to say. Hayden, I want to give you the opportunity to say maybe a final invitation, a giveaway or anything you want to say to anyone who's listening.
Yeah. So I just love you to come and join me in the five day challenge. We start on the 24th of January and so only 10 days away from now kind of thing. So definitely come and join me there. And I just want to say a huge thank you to all the team at the Y Institute. It's been great spending knowing you since June 2020 and looking forward to much more in the future as we continue to work together.
Well, thank you so much, Hayden. Have a great evening. Thank you for staying up late for us. And this is being recorded so you can share it with your friends. And I'm so glad we had you on. Welcome back anytime, Hayden. Have a great evening.
Thank you, Dan. You too.
