Dr. John A. King argues five-year plans are bullshit. His life took shape through unplanned events: an exchange program in Africa, immigration to the US, a mental health crisis in 2008. For him, the point is survival, thriving, and happiness, not a roadmap.

So I was speaking to my boy this morning about this whole, you know, 5-year plan, plan your life out stuff, and I've just come to the conclusion it's bullshit. Like, I look back at my life and I didn't plan one phase of it. I didn't plan to go to Africa back in the day as an exchange student. I didn't plan to go to ag college. Never, never had that thought in my mind. Never planned to go to Bible college. I never planned to come to America. I never planned to turn bloody crazy, you know, back in 2008. None of that. I didn't plan any of that. So, you know, when it all comes down to it, it's you survive, you thrive, and you are happy. If I could have that for my kids, I'd be a happy dad. If I could have it for myself, I'd be a happy man. And I think that's what it all comes down to, is squeezing the most out of life and every opportunity we have on this very brief trip on this beautiful blue marble. That's what the meaning of it is.
