Dr. John A. King challenges the myth of overnight success, arguing it comes from years of decisions and effort. He urges listeners to identify their "one shot" — the opportunities and choices that will shape their future and how they use the coming year.

Hey church, how you doing? You've probably heard the expression, an overnight success. The funny thing about most of the overnight successes I know of is that they took many, many years to become overnight successes. Often it was 20 years of struggle, 3 years of struggle, 10 years of struggle. Whatever it was, they were anything but an overnight success. What they were was a series of decisions based upon the belief That if someone took this one shot, this one opportunity, that would lead and build towards their future. You know, we've got many one shots in life. We've got many opportunities where we can make a decision to go forward into our future, forward into the unknown. So this evening I want to talk about one shots. What's your one shot? What's your future one shot? What does a one shot look like? And what are you planning to do in the coming year to take your one shot, to do that one thing you've always wanted to do, to achieve that one thing you've always wanted to achieve, to put behind you that one thing that you really want to put behind you? Life is a funny thing. It's both incredibly long and incredibly short. We really shouldn't spend it, pour ourselves out. Without doing our best to take our one shot, to maximize everything we possibly can from this glorious, wonderful ride.
